More mental than mentor I think Think its good we try to support each other at gigs where possible, I'm off to see Chris Sharman's band at a pub in the middle of nowhere next month! All good stuff again, might have been the fleetingest of unexpected note choice in the last song but I barely noticed. The songs didn't sound rushed so wouldn't give singist a hard time. It took me a couple of songs just to get over what the two lads before had done to Gordon Lightfoot's 'If You Could Read My Mind'....

I was once in a band where we were basically given the option of cutting the second set short as there were so few punters in and I asked a couple of mates to come along too! TBH until we got the booking I wasn't even aware that they did gigs at that venue on a Sunday, notorious graveyard shift after having good bands on the previous two nights. The band had already decided to fold anyway so we weren't looking for another date in any case and had considered cancelling it. No idea what the head count was, its a reasonably big venue with lots of areas you can't see from the stage, doubt whether it got much into double figures though excluding staff.

Yea! Every cloud & all that...

Title of thread sounds like the first line of an obscure blues toon Agree with Spoom, I've moved basses on for valid reasons each time (even if they were good basses they weren't what I needed or a were surplus at the time) so have no regrets. I still own all the basses I felt were right for me and would be of use long term gigging.

I had to look up the OP bass player as not familiar with him, does a cracking job on that tune. Randy Jo Hobbs, apparently died aged only 45

Late starter here too especially in terms of proper live gigs, only regret music wise is not doing it sooner but that's life. Have a great time at the gig and make sure it's not too long before you get more of them, it can be great fun.

Kudos to those that have bookings tonight and honour it even if they know they will probably play to a half empty pub or a full one watching the England match rather than the band. I guess the smart move is to just start early and get it all wrapped up by 11pm? We potentially had a wedding to do but thankfully it got called off so I'll be in front of TV with feet up and beer in hand...

No dancing for me either but I expect I'll be doing this at the band's next gig where I can wow the audience with some slightly out of time and probably not quite in key falsetto backing vox

Bugger, just checked my diary and I'm gigging otherwise I's have popped down. Have a good 'un Chris.
I used to use various aluminium tool cases, but found that: 1. they didn't take the abuse of regular gigging/occasional touring and 2. every other band out there was using the same thing, which meant that a couple of times people picked up the wrong case at the end of the night. I always got them back, but even so, it was annoying.
Mine's lasted years. I used to be in a band where everyone else was using one too. Put my initials in black electrical tape on one panel, problem solved.

Maplins aluminium camera/tool case here too. Carry pedals, leads, tools, batteries, mics etc all in here. You can get a fair bit in them and they are sturdy. Used them for years.

Hope you sorted out a dep for Sunday, otherwise poor form walking out at short notice if no one can do the gig with them no matter how sh*t you think they are. -
Ordered the special edition of the Winery Dogs CD called 'Dog Treats' from Amazon UK last Friday (6th June) and it arrived Sunday, absolutely love the CD, great songs, playing and singing, the special edition is amazing value for £16.61 plus delivery, you get 3 CD's (original CD, live CD and demo CD), a DVD, Mike Portnoy's studio diary booklet, a dod tag, a patch and a wine stopper, see my pic below http://i129.photobuc...zps10a89587.jpg John
And they throw in the PJ bass too? Excellent value!

Debbie Harry is an interesting one in that she'd already been around a fair while by the time Bondie made it big, she was in her mid thirties by the time Heart Of Glass was a hit. David Bowie is actually slightly younger and when you consider how much work he'd got through by by 1979...

Yes they started a while back doing 1976 (think that's where they began the reruns) as I'm not sure they had a continuous archive of whole week by week programmes from earlier than that. Then the Saville/Travis thing really blew up and there were clearly shows that they couldn't repeat any more so the idea of having equivalent 'in time' reruns for each week got sidetracked which is a shame. I record most of them and skip through stuff I'm not too bothered about. Has made me realise going from 76, 77, 78 and now 79 how many acts came on and had only one or two hits and then disappeared, bands keep coming on that I don't remember. Good example was last week's opener 'Match'. Don't recall them at the time at all.
Not er....exactly last night, but my last gig was a blast. I stood in for the bass player in Sack Sabbath (Black Sabbath tribute) last week at MFN Club in Nottingham. Great turnout and a great time had by all three bands who played. I only had one rehearsal so it was a bit testing! lol Here is a bit of footage for your amusement........ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoJLuE7nPXM
The hair's coming on nicely there Tony...

I've actually started jamming 'Pictures' at an open mic with a guy, not sure half the audience even know what it is
-
Come on guys it was a bit of quo ffs . I've had a trio of girls take over my mic at a wedding to do out of time and out of tune backing vox before now, handle it right and they soon get bored and move on.

Carts / Trolleys to carry amps/cabs - suggestions? what to avoid?

I've heard some say that the ones with foldable wheels aren't so good as often the wheels won't stay locked in place whilst in use. They obviously fold away a bit more compactly though. I had one of these designs for about 10 years; http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_3076wt_1156 before it got a problem after a particularly uneven bit of road I needed to negotiate in th edark and came a cropper in a big pothole. Having considered other designs I just went out and replaced it with an identcal one and it serving me well to date. I think its basically the same design as the one Lozz and ambient posted, very sturdy. Can transport my trace 1x15 combo and SWR 2x10 ext speaker in one go. -

This site is a kindergarten compared to some forums (fora?). Whatever they might be like in 'real life' people are never quite the same once tapping away at the keyboard. Some get wound up easily and some don't but that can actually be a reflection of real life too. There's one guy who posts on a football related forum i use regularly that is notorious for flying off the handle and has been temporarily banned at least once. Of course some people just go out of their way to wind him up now... -
Glad it went well, you're even standing in the same spot I was on Thursday night at the jam
-
I was dozing a bit but vaguely recall Brian mentioning a box set so maybe it was the one you mention.
Highlight on the words where the playing accents are then practise getting that word or syllable bang on the money with the played note. Example for me was ZZ Top's 'cheap sunglasses' on which I sang lead vocal - my lyric sheet read 'When you WAKE up in the morning and the LIGHT hurts your head - the FIRST thing you do when you GET up out of bed ' etc etc.
Ha, when I was looking for an alternative ZZ number to get people to do at jam sessions (cos EVERYONE was doing Sharp Dressed Man or Tush!) this is what I taught myself to sing & play bass and its pretty much my approach too. The house band gutarist never quite got the middle sections around the solos quite right but we had a laugh with it a couple of times.
