Do not use Parcelforce to ship musical instruments
steve-bbb replied to a topic in General Discussion
Hi folks, I've just had a claim for compensation refused by Parcelforce. They will only honour insurance claims for musical instruments up to 100GBP, even if you take out enhanced compensation, and only if the instrument is sent in what they judge to be a hard case. In my experience they will sell you enhanced compensation at the Post Office counter - Parcelforce are owned and operated by the Post Office - even if they are aware you are sending a musical instrument. The terms and conditions are not explained to you, and on checking with the branch I used the Post Office do not have them in printed format. In my case, the appeals centre responded with what I now know is their standard refusal that allegs the item was "inadequately packaged". This is despite the box I used being a double thickness corrugated cardboard one, with bracing pieces and packing to ensure the guitar could not move once inside the box. Even with this packaging, it arrived with impact and pressure damage that resulted in a smashed scratch plate and dents through the finish that exposed the wood on both neck and body. The worst part for me is that the guitar had arrived unscathed from Slovakia in a much flimsier box only a few weeks ago. The box I then used to send it from London to Manchester was one that Fender had used to send a special order to a local dealer via the US Postal Service - the box was immaculate, and that's despite the USPS having a fearsome reputation for mistreating parcels!
this sounds pretty much like the synopsis you will need to write on your small court claim form -
Why does JAZZ seem to be so widely disliked?
It's a great excuse though, isn't it? "Dude, you totally f***ed up the chorus" "Nah man, I was just jazzing it up a bit."
no no no no no no noooooo f*ing it up is not acceptable chord substitution is a complex artform not some random process -
Wow. Hadn't seen this one before. Thanks for posting!
its dreadful video quality but you can still hear his voice enough to tell just how good he is - to my ears a very similar voice to nat king cole quirky songs not the greatest production/mixing but a bit of a marmite album - i love it

i often tend th this
Fingernails down a blackboard time. Hideous. Andy you're right - there's a load of people around peddling this nonsense. Sing in your own voice, fer cryin' out loud. It's like listening to an impressionist.
but usually end up back at this
I enjoyed it. Having acts playing live, with mistakes and fluctuations, is still preferable in my opinion, to the homogenised Simon Cowell fayre on offer elsewhere. ... I guess I'm just a fan of hearing people make a musical noise. I've been this way for 35 years, and my delight in music hasn't faded yet.
-
Press play/record! I have Nanostudio on my phone - it's great. I'm not sure whether it can record audio, but you should be able to use the keyboard you've connected to play and record MIDI notes - literally by hitting record and noodling away. Try it. If it doesn't work I'll have a quick look into the desktop copy of Nanostudio and try to find a solution for ya.
didnt work lol - the keyboard is making groovy noises but nothing is recording on the track - tried it in reaper too going to stick to just playing bass edit - thenanostudio is on my desktop pc btw - i do also have it on my iphone but have never bothered using it so that was 11 quid well spent i guess -

Here is my blue affinity series J bought a couple of years ago from Manny's Music when i saw it in the shop i loved the colour so i picked it up and even with knackered and extremely dead strings it sounded and felt great so for 150 squid it was mine have looked at a few others in shops of same make model and colour and it appears that mine has a slightly better factory finish and detail attention than some of the brand spanking new ones ive seen - sound is great, passive stock squier pups with a relatively hot output , was planning on dropping a set of wizards in there but alas they are now even harder to come by - the only mod ive done to this is placing a heavy bridge on which imho did make a difference - not sure if the scratchplate was from factory it is a sort of dirty off white which has the appearance of once being clean but has been hung up in a room with somebody smoking 200 cigs a day - it is regularly gigged! -

ok i found my power supply and midi cable for the kybd (evolution mk425c) 2 octave jobbie - found the breakout cable for my emu 0404 - all connected up and the keyboard is working through nanostudio (installed on pc not mac btw) what do i do now -
-
will be even better if they carry on improving and gaining a bigger audience by their own good efforts and tell the likes of SC where to shove his format
-
dont worry too much about passive or active - i have two passive squiers (J's) and the output from both of them is as big as my active basses
-
dont forget that if you want to go for black nylons they are heavier gauge and you might end up needing to cut the slots in the nut to accommodate the string diameter
Haha! If it's any consolation Steve, this is exactly how I felt three years ago when I came back to tinkering with music at home after a ten year break. It's also exactly the sort of thing the Recording forum is there to help with. I think a lot of people are understandably put off from recording their own music because it's something that's typically surrounded by lots of techy jargon and photos of expensive studio set ups. Truth is it's very easy to get started and produce good quality tracks on a shoestring and with very little technical know-how. In many ways it really is no more complicated than just hitting 'play/record'! We're going to be posting up a 'Beginners Guide to Recording' thread fairly soon, which will provide a step-by-step guide to getting started (equipment, software, free resources, etc). In the meantime if you have any questions just ask... Paul
thanks i will keep an eye out for this -
I've had interesting experiences on Gumtree, including meeting a nice chap off the overnight bus from London in Glasgow , so that he could buy a £200 bass. It all went well and was a bit of an adventure, and was based 100% on trust. I would suggest you speak with the seller and that way you'll be better able to suss it out. Good luck!
this - if you are unsure then probably best to politely decline personally i would only buy off gumtree if it was close enough that i could go in person and inspect the goods and take the cash with me even on our beloved basschat forum i have bought two basses from here (one 20 mins and the other about 80 mins drive away) and a further on from evilbay which was about 40 mins drive away - buying stuff like pedals is different as they pretty much do what they say on the tin but an instrument you need to pick up and handle and play and see how it feels - just because you like the make and model is not always a guarantee for satisfaction and the best way to ensure you do like the instrument imho is to pick it up and play it having said all that i do appreciate your geographic location might have a significant effect on your decision - please excuse us south-east londoncentric spoilt for choice bassists
