1.
it was mentioned that being able to turn it up would somehow make it better. Sounds bollocks to me, was wondering what you guys thought.
you are indeed correct young grasshopper this is definitely guitardspeakbollocks
 2.
Hmm, had a quick look on the Status website (under Online Shop > Active Circuits) and they don't show one of these. The socket and Vol and Blend pots look original but it's possible it's got a replacement preamp. According to the website it possibly had a PS-1 originally, although maybe it's some kind of prototype that didn't make it into full production. I'm slightly suspicious of that grey box on the volume pot, I'm guessing it might be a resistor to bring the levels down so it doesn't distort the preamp? Might be worth asking Rob if it's one of his circuits and what he advises. Although I think the factory is going on it's summer break for a couple of weeks sometime around now.
thanks Rich i was looking on the website too - i was wondering if that little grey chip was a cap for the tone tho?? will ping them an email and see what they suggest im expectiing they will suggest this was modded after the factory because the soldering on the pots aint none too pretty might be time for a decent status board - or a j-east would be nice - wonder if they supply the board and pots without being fixed to the j plate??
 3.
My J-Retro preamp had a tiny control which adjusted the output higher or lower to suit your bass amp. Try opening it up and seeing if there's anyway to adjust the output on your preamp. If there is one It will probably be a tiny rotary control which you adjust with a small screwdriver.
nothing obvious - the underside of the pcb has three tabs which are soldered on to the pot so will prob need to unscrew the retaining nut on the front of the control
 4. After doing a bit of a comparison yesterday i sort of inadvertently noticed that the output on my status matrix is actually below the output on both my squier passive J's (even the J with the nylon wounds is pumping out slightly more millivolts) The bass is a status matrix #844 with twin J pups and the treble boost circuit (i think this is about the most basic circuit status have made?) The pups are approx 4-5mm and 7-8 mm distance from string (as per recommendation on status website) The strings are a reasonably new set of steel (red ends) rotosound swingbass I have check the battery and it is showing 9.4v on the multimeter so still appears to be reasonably fresh I have compared the output from jack socket with two passive J's and it is just marginally less than each of them? The amp used for audio comparison was my Trace Boxer65 which has only one input and as far as im aware does not have anything as sophisticated as automatic sensitivity input adjustment Is this routine for this bass? i did notice this weekend and before that i seemed to be lacking a bit of power and now realise i should have put the input into the passive input on my head rather than the active input if the bass output is this low any suggestions or ideas much appreciated
 5. Birthday Song is a nice example of this too http://youtu.be/MjF1bG5LUcs he does appear to strectch his fingers quite a bit whilst not moving his hand around oh dear have I inadvertently sidetracked this into a strectch v. slde wars thread?!!!
 6. FML !! youd think this was a cover by the beatles with Jaco on bass playing a P instead of a J
 7. nice arrangement of stairway and her voice suits it really well
 8.
We had a few up dancing. There was a very strange incident with one enthusiastic dancer though. She ran up to dance when we started playing 20th century boy. She was leaping and thrashing around like there was no tomorrow! She then lost her balance and stumbled from about 20 feet away into my stage area! Fell across my pedal board, smacked her head on the lighting rigs foot controller and stumbled off again. I plugged everything back in and carried on playing. She came up to us when we were packing up to apologise by which time we had discovered she had smashed one of the foot switches on the lighting rig controller, with her head. She complained of having a sore head! Aint alcohol great!
11. went to a small local pub last night lobster pot - apparently they have had some issues with the local council and noise orders and all that tosh so the regular corner of the main bar they use for bands was out of bounds as that being the section of the pub nearest to the nimby neighbours which meant we were moved to a small side room off the main bar at other end of pub - our frontspersons were in the gap/opening into the bar and the rest of us all hidden around the corner - french doors out to table and chairs at pavement so punters outside looking in - fireplace open from bar through to the side room so we ended up placing on PA speaker in the fireplace pointing through into the main bar - thumper remembered to bring his own fan and we had four fans altogher in our 3m x 5m space - appreciative and friendly crowd shaking their thang about and thankfully we didnt get peter andre trying to gatecrash the after party
 12. three basses for a 90 minute set? that would be decadent!
 13. just to avoid any unnecessary and potentially embarrassing confusion we are not he he is playing nearby in kingshill tonight but we are at the Lobster Pot in West Malling ME19 6JU i wont have the coffee table strapped around my neck tonight but you can still come and laugh and point
 14.
I know quite a lot of people who were there that say Utopia kicked Zeppelins arse that day.
oh they certainly did - the only way in which they were inferior is that the FOH had the sound down around 60% all day for the support bands then cranked it right up when Zep came on for extra effect - JPJ and JB were awesome and RP was OK ... JP was a shambles and was stoned out of his tree Todd was all over the stage in a bright yellow lycra onesie and really worked the crowd with a great set
 15.
Knebworth 1979?
yayyyeesssss
 16.
cos he played jazz maybe!
yes but he was also very precise in a lyrical sort of stylee
 17. NIge when you were probably in short trousers i had the immense pleasure of seeing Todd Rundgren Kasim Sultan Roger Powell and John Wilcox at a very big live gig supporting a mahoosive band They were imho better than the main act
 18. haha plenty of pics in interwebsland of jaco with his J wonder why he never played a P?
 19.
....a fight probably. Jaco threads generally head the same way as p vs. j threads.
Marcus you could always try another beatles thread just to distract everybody from this one
 20.
How far forward of the mics were the speakers?
not very - thats the singists territory i try not to get to involved only a couple of feet iirc
 21.
It is unreasonable & wholly unrealistic to expect everyone's experience of Jaco to be the same.
im going to have a check and see what they saying on talkbass about jaco
 22. personally i rather like his stuff - his solo album stuff is ok and his jazz big band arrangements are great but for me personally the Joni Mitchell and Weather Report stuff is imho the best of the Jaco catalogue and i would suggest that this was down to the chemistry between the individuals in those groups ( and PM's Bright Size Life too) In the JM band he was playing alongside Pat Metheny and Milke Brecker and backing the lyrics or arguably one of the finest songwriters in modern music. In Weather Report he was playing alongside the immense playing and compositional skills of Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Yet in both line-ups he manages to consistently produce bass lines which are so indescribably unique but they never seem to compete with the tune but always enhance it which is a major factor in why both of these bands the sum of the individual parts was far greater than the whole. It has already been mentioned on another Jaco thread several months ago and worth searching but check out the video interview of Joni Mitchell describing Jaco and his contribution to her music
 23.
No I wasn't. Ask a cross section of joe public to name a bass player and I'm pretty sure he'd be way down the list after, for example, Paul McCartney, Sting, Phil Linnot, Chris Wolstenholme, and probably after John Entwhistle as well. Most people have never heard of him.
no mark king??? FTW
 24.
Oh god, I'd forgotten about those whinging dullards...which kind of proves JTUK's point!
But to be fair Keane are good in that they make Coldsore sound interesting
