Whats the hardest bassline you've ever played?

Ahhhh ... Mr Astronomer ..... I often pick my bass up unplugged in front of the telly. Kids in bed and missus asleep on the sofa and just dabble with a bit of Rush. Rush bass lines are great to learn. Years later you sit and play one you sorted years ago and it's a pleasure all over again. In the last few weeks I've had a bit of a signals and GUP renaissance. You learn the chops, practice and eventually after regular playing forget them but inevitably you will pick up a few little moves that stay with your playing forever and then you turn it into something of your own .... I found myself playing those opening harmonics to hemispheres on a toy piano in woolworths the other day. I only ever tried a fretless once and thought the camera eye would be an acid test. -

rhythm stick broke my arm for years and I wasn't even playing it right. Most gigs we do it in the 2nd half and when I actually got to grips with how it should be played we had to learn the whole thing again because I could not fit the original line into the monster we had created. I am 99.9% happy to busk most of the time but once I had nailed this there was no way I would play it wrongly again. Apart from that some punk stuff breaks my arms because I can't do plectrums ... I l;ove playing along to Rush stuff. Digital Man being my soundcheck of choice at the moment. Apart from that I bang my fingers into the strings and some nights are better than others ... I never beat my self up about any of it though because it is always a pleasure .. -
I joined my first band with a gig in two months. I went out the following Saturday and bought my first guitar. You can play along to cd's until your knob falls off. You only ever learn how to play music by busking/jamming with other people.

Saw him with MG's as Neil Young's backing band at Finsbury park about '92. Fabulous and tremendous. Neil Young's current bass player Rick "the bass player" Rosas is very much in the same vein.

About a month and a half ago I met and fell in love with a Marcus Miller Jazz. Last Nov or Dec I fitted (yes me!) a J- Retro to my 97 US Jazz. It was the non soldering model and really was easy to fit. I have now returned my '97 to passive as the Marcus is active. It will just make it easier to be a spare and will give me a bit more flexibility in the long run. I will be honest. The J-Retro is superb. (I havel included a link). It is a more sensitive pre-amp than the sadowsky in the marcus. I have probably done a dozen gigs top with the unit. I have all the instructions and diagrams that came with it. I do not include a picture because my youngest son broke the camera and there are pictures on the link anyway. The unit however is as you would expect practically new. Great option to mod one of your Jazz basses. No routing etc... It will gather dust in its box if I dont sell. They are £175 new. Im not sure what to ask? Im open to offers. I met them all last year. I bought Dave Meros a beer at the end of the night. He had just had his new custom job and it was his first night with it. His major beef with his ricky was that E -F on the bottom E isn'tr always that distinguishable. He was nice but very, very boring. The rest of the band were great especially nick.

I like the c shape skinny neck and maple board on my marcus miller and I'm thinking about getting a similar neck for my standard US '97. Would the existing tuners be able to be used in the new neck? Would the 3 bolt of the skinny 70's neck match up with the 4 bolt? Would a standard fender neck pocket be suitable? I seem to be obsessed with maple? but some other woods have been mentioned that I know nothing about? It's a bit like the end of soap is it not?

Serious question? I love my recently acquired maple neck marcus miller jazz. I have a great '97 US jazz with rosewood board and I'm thinking of getting a maple board for it. Its not vintage obviously but is a great bass and I would consider buying a maple board for it. Old or new? any body recommend seller or company? cheers.

right or wrong if I pick a bass up in a shop I instantly play the opening bass bit to the trees. I never play it any other time?

The band I played (lead guitar, until I saw the light) in the mid 90's supported Magnum. What do I remember? If the sound guy is called Max keep him off the gear until you have soundchecked. The singer is a little bloke who drives a beige rover metro. Good luck. They didn't impress me very much as people, musicians, pets etc...

Great! ... and ow bin ya? This is like a reunion from "toys we am" I know I am assuming things but I assume a few Wolves supporters are here, so who am I pictured with. I attended his testimonial as a very young boy in the early/ mis '70's???

A support band, onion bhajiis, a David Essex tribute, a firework display, a disco and loads of Bathams Bitter at the Lamp Tavern in Dudley. Life doesn't get much better than this!

The band I play in ( 2 people for over 23 years, not that that is relevant) will be upgrading our PA next week. It will be pretty much a full 1.5k rig that is comfortable in a pub or a town hall, Darlaston being one recent forgeteable one. Anyway with the new bottoms we are getting it seems likely I can get a combo/ direct/ other and not have to lug my ashdown rig about anymore. What should I do? I'm very happy with the ashdown MAG and 4x10 I have got .... but what should I do. Straight in through the stomp box and a monitor back? DI a smaller combo? get a hartke type kickback and DI from a smaller amp. Keep the ashdown put it further back and push more through the PA. cheers, Mr Fudge.

Day 2. Thanks for all the replies. I have tweeked the micro tilt and now A, D and G strings are great. E stills has a nasty buzz. I did the obvious and raised the bridge saddles a little but this meant that the 4 strings combined lost that slight arch profile and it did not feel right. What I want to do now is sort the E string out but what would I tweek next. Steve-Soar above mentioned slackening off the truss rod a quarter turn. Would it help the above? I have only had the bass a month and may yet take it back and ask them to set it up again free of charge. I think that would be a fair request. I would like to sort it out though and gain some knowledge. I have this burning ambition of putting together my own bass one of these days. Since joining basschat I have changed a scratchplate, fitted a JEast preamp and now I'm tweeking necks. Where will it end? Thanks again in anticipation of advise.

Q1. I have recently purchased, and am delighted with a Marcus Miller jazz. However Im experiencing a few neck problems. There is a little bit of movement which is causing some fret buzzing. The movement is hard to explain but with prolonged playing the neck moves back towards me and its low action means that the frets buzz. It did not happen when I bought it and I have restrung it with slightly lighter guage strings and it didn't happen then either. Obviously I will be taking it back for someone to have a look at. I wondered if anyone had any ideas. I know its a 3 bolt and my US is a 4 bolt and I've never experienced any of these probs before basses or guitars. Q2. I love the maple board and the c shape of my mm jazz. I love my '97 US jazz (rosewood board). Im now thinking of getting a maple neck, c shape for my US jazz. It doesn't matter what make as long as it's the business and obviously a great player. I imagine I will never sell these basses so its purely for my playing preference. Cheers.

I just bang the fingers in to the strings. Some nights are good and I go for things I probably shouldn't. Some gigs can be hard work. I think I hear the lines in my head before I play them. Apart from obvious stuff I never play the same lines twice. I am far too busy and try to play too many notes. Probably a hang up of being a guitar player first. I love playing bass and that's good enough for me.

I have just bought a CIJ Marcus Miller signature. I bought mine from a shop so perhaps I payed a little more. I have seen some online about £650 - £700. It is simply a wonderful bass. I have a 97 US Jazz that is great b ut this has got something about. It's also my first maple neck which is a pleasure and I think I'm right that the neck profile is the C shape that makes it slimmer than the standard jazz. Oh yes it sounds great as well. I would definately check one out if funds allow.

My love of all things Rush and Geddy Lee inspired me to play bass ( already a guitarist ) about 15 years ago So his lines were my main motivation. Now being in a cover band for 12 years has really been worth it's weight in gold. We decided to play Rhythm stick and it literally broke my arm. Then I discovered I was not really anywhere near years later when I discovered Norms link below. Scroll down, it really helped me and perhaps I'm 90% on a good night. I've been a bit of a rock guitar player and folkish player 20 years+. This is a whole new technique for me ( I use my little finger a lot, one of those self taught bad habits I suppose) any way this tune is driving me (and my wife) mental at the moment.
