1. Why oh why oh why oh why oh why aren't Rush headlining?
2. I know he is a genius etc... but it leaves me cold, a bit like ELO or The Eagles. Great for 5 minutes and then the realisation that it's total sh1t. Can I refer everyone to Neil Young last year to show everyone how it should be done .... with passion, brilliance, dignity and without compromise. What makes all this even harder to stomach is that Richard Thompson is headlining a smaller stage right now and there is nothing! Your BBC ... my arse!
3. First impression I thought the bass must have a hazelnut board and he had an allergic reaction to it ( despite the gloves)
4.
Same here! It's uncanny... I went for the padded Brown/Black 11cm X 145cm 'vintage' one: Forty quid including registered delivery and insurance. EDIT: Spelling
I think this is the one I have. I's a great strap but straplocks can be a pain in the arse due to thickness. Im sure you will find something just as chunky for under £40.
5. Just read that you are from the black country .. and then I read Yorricks reply properly. Of course Bass has no geographical, religious or political boundaries. We are all brothers and sisters.
6.
orrr roight there mate, and welcome from the Brum contingent.
'old onabit Yorick. This sounds like a Black Country Bloke to me. Bloody Brummies Bostin'
7. I am no expert but on our Dynacord desk there are 3 or 4 channels that can be selected for phantom power. I was told that if we miked a drum kit up that phantom power would be good for cymbals. this may have been bollox though and we have never used it.
8. Had a provisional run through of the new Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers album, Mojo. Too busy listening to the new beard album still. Prob give the Petty album a good run through next week.
9. I've played with the same blokes for 25 years. What are you on about?
10. Been a massive Rush fan for 30+ years. Spocks Beard have really done it for me in recent years. http://thebusbybabes.webs.com/apps/photos/ Some fanboy pictures of me and other band members with the beard. Im the one in the Neil Young tee shirt.
11.
Mine has plenty of growl and clarity, it certainly isn't muddy, but yeah darker across the strings....but I'd just call that "more even" Si
Just had 84's in my 97' Jazz which means that both my Jazz basses have 84's. I have not tried 64's. My thinking was that probably wouldn't be a massive difference from stock Fender ones, although of course I might be wrong. Si sums it up perfectly IMO "growl and clarity" I love these pick up's. I hate actives but these give you a little edge and output on the stock fenders. A little more aggressive in output with all the great tone already described. For me personally they have been perfect and have to some extent quelled subsequent GAS.
12.
I managed to nail it the other night . The main run is still a bit of a leap of faith in terms of staying in time but I'll get there. Cheers
Typical Geddyesque of the time. Some Rush bits you just have to nail due to timings. The more Rush you play the more "obvious" it becomes. If you pick one track in isolation then it will of course take time. I used to play along to these era of Rush all the time and eventually you really get in the zone. When you leave them though it's not as if you can slip back in easily. There is no way I could go home and just play this after months/ years or whatever. I found that learning Xanadu (eventually it properly ) was a great epiphany into Geddy's playing many years ago. I usually give it a blast in sound check to this day, and sometimes get some nice comments from any punters who know anything remotely about bass.
13.
...but you know it'll be worth it - and presumably are aware of the manufacturing issue that arose causing a delay? Shouldn't be too long hopefully. Got the t-shirt along with a sticker and a card included thanking everyone who pre-ordered for their faith in the band and help A couple more listens today & still loving it generally, but then I am a bit of a fanboy when it comes to the Beard. Some bits will grow I think. The opener has bits that are reminiscent of a couple of tracks from IX, but still good - especially LOUD in the car. ... and as ever Dave Meros has a great tone (one that I strive for) and the bass is certainly not hiding in the mix
Got my copy yesterday. I had the t-shirt option. I heard there had been some delay because some of the discs were skipping. Track 1 on mine skips, but it loaded up fine in itunes and I've ripped a disc for the car. I love the beard, and I sounds like they have made another gem after a few brief listens. Check out Dave Meros. Not shy in the mix and a great tone. Hope they tour again soon.
14. I love Portugal, especially the Lisbon coast around Cascais. Fantastic place for a holiday. Cornish style coastline with beautiful weather, food and people. Also not many other Brits there which is a big advantage. Welcome .... Portugal is England's oldest friend. (except when it comes to football )
15.
Dude,,,, long shot,, but Ive a 97 USA Jazz with active EMG fitted,,,, if you wanna try it out see what you think and your in the area etc...offers there..
Very kind offer and many thanks. Never really in the area though. I've tried active with John East stuff and Sadowsky in a Marcus sig. I just couldn't get on with them. For good or bad I've always rolled all the pots up and dug in with my fingers. The wizards have been fantastic and just really suit my playing.
16. Whoosh .... I played there with the lovely paul h in the early 90's. I was the g******t Great gig. We were asked to put all the drum cases in the cellar. At the end of the night the drums went in the van ans so did the cases, stuffed full of bottled beer and anything else we could get our hands on. We are from West Brom don't ya know. Have a good one!
17. Some valuable thoughts. Might go 84's again. I get a lot of oomphff from my Jap Jazz with them. This Jazz also has a chunky gotoh bridge and maple board which I think adds to the oomphff. I thought Hammers because my US jazz I want to mod is through strung (which I don't want to mess with) and rosewood board, which I always feel a bit deader sounding. I want to mod it essentially so I can play both basses on a regular basis.
18. Yeah, phoning might be the way forward. Cheers
19. I modded my Jap Jazz about 18 months back with 84's and love em. I now want to mod my old US 97 Jazz and I am considering some Hammers? I like a bit of dark growl, but will it be too dark? I play rock, pop, indie, phychodelic country, middle of the road gumph covers band. everything really. I'm leaning on getting some Hammers at the moment just for a bit of variety. It all goes through my MarkBass SA450 and 2x12 Bergs. Any thoughts appreciated as always. Cheers Mr F.
20. My mother wouldn't let any of us watch ITV when we were young. except for Star Soccer ... nuff said
21. By the time it gets pumped out into some midwest "enormodome" to 40,000 he might as well be endorsed by "apple". IMO it doesn't matter what bass or amp Geddy uses he will always get the same sound due to his very aggressive finger style. That's 99% of his tone. There is obviously a bit of a growly preamp to boot. On some classic albums ( Moving Pictures a good example) Geddy used his Rick and Jazz. 2 of the greatest loves in my life are Rush and Bass and I dont know which he plays which on. I think its even on record he can't remember. If Geddy Lee played my Jap Jazz through my markbass rig I don't think there would be any discernible difference even to us bass players. Joe Public wouldn't even have the first idea.
22. whatever you decide on it's a bloody nice choice. I've used reliable fender, I think its STRATOsphere or something very similar from ebay. great place to shop although you will get stung on excise on delivery. But ... some fantastic Jap reissue stuff and the only place to reliably source it as far as I know.
