1.
cheer mr fudge how do i tweek the neck and bridge?
http://garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/setupmanual.html This helped me. Very straight forward, which is important as I'm from West Bromwich. Seriously though if tou havn't done this kind of thing before be patient because you will get some great advise here. Good luck again.
 2. Have you put on a perfectly straight neck??? You may have to put a bit of relief into your neck and give the truss rod a tweek. The saddles of course are a factor, but if you have no relief in the neck you are putting the horse before the cart. I have been tweeking and swapping necks for a year or 2 now and I have received some superb advise from very knowledgeable people on this forum. Im sure they will be along shortly. Don't panic and don't do anything too rash before you get some solid advice. Good luck .. It will all work out
 3.
Hey Zoe Great playing, I played this track in a covers band gig 3 weeks ago for charity and it's a toughie to play. We're now making an album of the gig to get more funds for the charity and we've recorded a version of hit me, when it's finished I'll stick a link up so you can hear my effort! I had the pleasure of seeing the Blockheads play a couple of weeks ago in Southwark park (South London) and they played it, sounded as great as it did the first time round! Well done for learning a real tricky bass line.. Great groove though eh? Geoff
I saw them in Dudley a few months back ... about 30 people there. Supported them with Phil Jupitis last year and 700 there. Obviously to do with the support band. I love the Blockheads ...
 4. IMO this is one of the holy grails of bass playing and I can see from your profile you are a Geddy Lee fan. Fantastic ...
 5. I play this practically every week in my covers band. It took me ages to nail it and my arms are still dropping off at the end of it after all these years ( we do go into a big 80's jam and if the drummer starts a little quick ...) I'd probably been playing bass more than your chronological age now before I got anywhere near. Superb!
 6.
Historically Geddy Lee fooled most Rush fans into thinking his 70s Jazz was a 4001, particularly on Moving Pictures but allegedly on a good few other Rush albums too. Alternatively there's this approach:
Very very true ... also someone on this forum pointed out recently (a fact that I had forgotten over the years) that Geds Jazz had some dodgy wiring that contributed to his sound. It's all in his fingers though isn't it really???
 7. A drummer came up to me half way through a gig and complemented me on my Rik sound. Granted he hadn't seen me as he been round a corner. "Cheers" I said, "I love the sound of a Rik" as I pointed to my Jazz. He obviously knew something about basses and tone (good drummers often do) Ironically I put some wizzard 84's in my jazz last week and I now think it sounds like a bit riky. btw wonderfull pups.
 8. Put a Gotoh on my 75 RI last week and it is excellent. £50 less than a Badass, and I've had one of these before on my Marcus sig. I think the Gotoh look great, much the same as Fender but obviously heavier and chunkier and a little bit longer.
 9. I am continually wondering this also. I run my SA450 with the first filter (the old school one) up a knacker and the other one I dont have on at all. I do run my bass through my Boss ME50 and have the natural compressor on, but to be I dont think it makes the slightest bit of difference. I like playing around with the first filter because I think I can get more of a P sound out of Jazz when I need to. The second filter doesn't do anything for me personally. Infact if I didn't like my wah so much I think I could easily play "unprotected" I do like to slip into a bit of octave, distortion and delay on rare occassions, just to get that Hawkwind thing going. Have a bump for a great compressor.
 10. I'm a passivist .... I play aggressively with fingers. I've tried active a few times, just settled on some meaty wizzard jazz passive pups. All depends on your playing ... but 99% of tone is how you play IMO.
 11. Fully gigged them last night. WOW! meaty, deep, very, very tight and classically growly. Just what I wanted. It's great when you buy a product and it's everything you expected and more. I highly recommend wizzards.
 12.
If you buy a 300W amp head, you won't have to worry about having enough power. Anything less, and you might find yourself wanting. So save until you can afford a 300W amp head. Hartke heads sound good and they're fairly cheap. Cabs... If you've got a friend to help you load in and out, look at the Ashdown MAG 410T. It'll handle 300W happily, sound good doing it, and it's pretty cheap, especially if you can find one used. But it's a two-man lift. If you want a personally-portable bass cab, especially if you've got stairs to negotiate, you'll be looking at pricey gear.
I think this is good advice. I used Ashdown 300 mag and 4 x 10 cab for years and they did a great job. Infact I still have them as a back up rig.
 13.
I just sat down with a bass and a pick and decided to plough along with some records. Started out with some Joe Jackson, then a bit of Elvis Costello, then some Jam. There's cool bass playing in tham thar records. Which rock bands have bass parts worth having these days? I'm sure they must be out there, I'd like to hear them please.
I play in a covers band that features all the people you list .. a very fine era for bass .... I'm not sure it has been surpassed melodically or technically.
 14. I love Dave Meros from Spocks Beard ... They are a contemporary band that play prog that sounds 30 years old. I think it's called a double bluff. What have I won?
 15.
Hi,young bassist 8 years old in Derbyshire, seeks young band, other young muscians to play/practise with, commited and enthusiastic,to joining forming band
Bt the time you posted this my 8 year old had been in bed 3 hours ...
 16.
Actually yeah listening to some old Jam stuff today I noticed things Bruce Foxton did that I never noticed when I was a teenager. It was pretty inspiring. Makes you realise that you can probably get away with more than you think, without it sounding like anything's wrong in the bass department.
From 1979 until 1985 I played all my bass on an assortment of badminton rackets. It was a great start ... and eventually prepared me for the real thing  :brow:
 17. Sometimes I dig out albums that I listened to 25 years ago and still love ( usually Rush ) Then work out all the bass lines I loved before I played bass. or I sit in the conservatory for hours on end playing my piano ... ^_^
 18. Nudie suited Gram Parsons ... Also responsible for some of the greatest music ever recorded. What do I win?
 19.
And behind the camera...1 x proud daddy
What can I say? .... They are both fabulous basses ...
 20. 1 x blue Jazz. Marcus sig neck, Jap 75RI body, Tort scratch, Wizzard 84 pups, Gotoh bridge. 1 x US Jazz '97. All original, except 62RI neck. Markbass SA450 + 2x AE112 Bergs. 1 x daughter. No mods ...
 21. Replaced the pups in my (more or less) 75RI Jazz with some 84's. Big, warm, beefy and growly in a good way. More output than the original pups, but nowhere as sensitive as active elecronics which I just couldn't get on with. (I've tried Sadowsky and JE Retro). Im really pleased with these pick ups. There are some great combinations when you roll the tone down and switch between pups. This is something that has not really appealed to me on previous pups and I have just had everything turned full and tweked the amp instead. Andy was a pleasure to deal with and when he had a break in production he knocked my pups up and they were on the doormat the next day. Superb ... I also added a Gotoh bridge which is excellent and IMO as good as a Badass, but £50 less. PS. Im posting some pictures in the gear porn section.
 22.
I think I can now say....its mine. Best looking Jazz ever IMHO. Ruairidh has been ace in getting this deal sorted out, top man. Thanks again, Nathan
Looks like your in for a treat. I love Jap Fenders
 23.
One band I was in agreed to play a summer gig in cream linen suits
Sounds like a Martin Bell thing going on.
 24.
I am being silly, amps get warm.
And so do ovens , but not microwaves ...
 25.
I'm sure it's fine, I'm probably being paranoid.
Im sure you're right. My markbass got all hot at a wedding the other week and I convinced myself the fan wasn't working. As I approach middle age autism is kicking in. It must be a man and bass thing .. Just going to make sure I turned the oven off .......
