1. Hmmm! Very strange! Personally speaking, as a massive JD nut (as those of you that know me!) it looks like someone has put something together as a custom instrument and somewhere along the line, someone else may have mentioned that it was a JayDee. Shame there's only one pic - would be nice to have some real closeups of the pickups etc and the rear of the headstock, where one would expect to find John's decals. Note the Badass (or similar) bridge unit, plus the stringers are fairly widely spaced in the centre of the body - not familiar JD traits!
2. Allo Live Music stock a range of basses, from Fender thru to Musicman etc. They've got an awesome guy teaching there too - he's got hundreds of basses...! Cheers! Nick
3. Nice to see you here! Did you play for Greg Lawrence many years ago? Nick (ex One Eyed Cats)
4. Does look like a Hondo. Best thing for it would be a pyre! What a heap of crap! Sorry! Nick
5. Red Bull! Gives you wiiiiiiiiinnnnnnngggggssssssss! Or strings I suppose.
6. I normally take 12 or so basses to gigs - I've got a chap with a van to drive them there, clean 'em, set them up etc....! Nah! I wish! Normally two (normally the Arpege and Passion) but if its a big corporate job with a big stage, I sometimes take 4 or 5, just in case there are any other bass players there! Invariably they give you dirty looks whilst trying to dance with their bird but come over all nice during the break! `Nice Viggeeers mate' (note hard `g's)- Actually son, you pronounce it `Vijjeeair'. `Can I 'ave a go?' No. In 26 years of playing, I've never bust a string - pulled one through the bridge of my Hohner Arbor fretless once! Had very small ball ends (ooer!)
7. Thanks for the budge, Fudge! There should be more love, I think! Alright Girls!? Nick BuMp!!!!
8. Alo! Yes, its a Series II Mark King model. The serial number should indicate its build year; if it starts with 05 then its pretty safe to say its an '85 model! I had one from the same era - great basses! Cheers! Nick (if you get time, check out the pic of me on my homepage - complete with a very well known red JD that I used to own!)
9. Cheers! Give my Status Series 2000 a bump tomorrow in the For Sale area! Ta! N
10. Allo! They appear fiddly at first but with a bit of dilligence, its not too bad! From what I recall, I used to use Elites 40-100 on mine - suited the bass well. I sold my bass in '93 so this is purely from memory - apols to any current Factor owners! 1. Slacken off the string(s) using the tuner knobs. 2. There is a small `staple' shaped metal piece which holds the string `capstan' wheel in place. Lift up the `staple' and this will then release the capstan and you can then move it freely in order to remove the string. 3. To restring, you need to locate the ball end of the string into the relevant `hole' in the headstock, then push the `silken' end of the new string into the hole in the capstan wheel, then wind the wheel backwards such that the string becomes taught (this is the painful bit as the teeth on the wheel are quite sharp!). The wheel clicks etc. 4. Once the string is as taught as possible, you can then tune it to pitch using the tuner!
11. Totally agree Steve. From my experience of many many hours building basses with Ian Hancock over 6 years or so, the body core wood plays an important part of the overall tonality of an instrument. The construction (i.e. through neck, set or bolt-on) also plays a big part and obviously, the pickups, pickup placement and EQ. However, even two basses that are identical in build etc can sound totally different, due to the cellular makeup of the wood/s used - even wood from the same tree can sound different depending on its `location' within the tree trunk, the base of the tree = heavier, more compressed cells due to the weight acting on it. When you think about it, we're dealing with organic structures which are subject to nature's forces!
12. Well done Kev - good price there! Nick
13. Hello Boy!!! Good luck - just out of interest, Marcus is a good player, nowhere near as brilliant as me but 'es not bad!!!! hehe! Nick O' Modest
14. Hmm! Series II Mark King model - really not sure about them thar additional features? Is it based in Wales by any chance?
15. ..theres only one thing that would look good on this bass. Its orange! Its FIRE!!!! Hehe! Looks like an old Jedson body.
16. He mentions that he has two identical basses in both listings now! Hmm. Tasty!
17. I've just sourced a monstrous Jaydee Calibas six string - I've not weighed it but I think its just over a stone! On saying that, it hangs nicely on a Comfort strap, but then I play quite high etc. Nick
18. Ped! Two reasons! 1. There's only one bass in that pic...! 2. Female bassists would inundate my Inbox (ooer!) with messages of unrequited love! hehe!
19. Anyone interested???? BHUMP!
20. Allo! Thanks again for all the comments - meant to say would consider trades + cash in my favour (JayDee Roadies, fretted/fretless etc or something of that ilk!). Many thanks! Nick
21.
Tell us more of these French birds
You've already played le blue une!!! Finally got into my album - not brilliant pics of the 2000 but pics nonetheless! Excuse bad hair - all shaved off now!
22.
Would the new 'natural' Essex 'bird originate from Colchester?
Ooo yeah! I've 'ad 'er for many years, just fallen in love again (natural graphite Series 2000 #27) - plays like lightning through a warm slab of `can't believe its not butter'!
