1. Great stuff Kev! I recall that mag - very good, wonder what happened to it? - they also reviewed a Roadie fretless bass, bit like Kol's! Hi Kol! Good review there - they really liked the basses! The 80's mags are fantastic - I've got some old Guitarist mags dating back to '84 and the range of gear that was available back then was inspirational - especially now that us keen teenage players back then are fast approaching 40 years of age! Scary eh??
2. Allo! Yes. Very strange! Not sure if anyone has spoken to John Diggins about it - he's the only man who knows! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=24942 Nick
3. Looks like a Series III - can't see a funk groove which would define a Series II model. Many of the late 80's models were Series III's - I had one in '88 when I was 17!!! Meant to say, there are two JD sites - one is the old version... http://www.jaydeeguitars.com New version: http://www.jaydeecustomguitars.co.uk Cheers!
4.
Hello chaps! Ahh, the cross-forum pollenation continues! Moo my man, great to 'see' you again over here on Basschat! Totally agree with your comments Nick. The sound of the GA24 is more 'modern' in a way and seems much tighter...well to my ears anyway (hmmm, that reminds me, must pop down to Boots and get some wax removal stuff before the weekend's gig onslaught...). Although you can still get some RRRAAAWWW sounds off the bridge pick up on it's own. Lavverly!! What mods are you thinking of apart from the neck length? I might just let you blag my custom's headstock shape if you're a good boy!!!
Hallo! I'm thinking about a more `Alembicised' body, bringing the horns level, but retaining the horn shape! Plus some other special bits!!
5. Here you go m8 http://www.jaydeecustomguitars.co.uk/bass_price_list.html Cheers
6. Beautiful bass - absolute steal at that price! Nick
7. Nice one Matt - superb condition! Do you still have the 2000 - if so, what's the serial number? I've got number 27
8.
I have 16.5mm on all my King Basses and also on my MK Alembic... The Alembo really does play itself!!! Unbelievable action on it! One of the next basses I order will be an original cherry red Series I JayDee... Just like Marks first one. Just love that bass. Then a pink one... Then a blonde Alembic MK... Then, then, then!! THEN I'LL GET MY VIGIER BACK
Calm down dear! Just to let everyone know, Matt used to own THE Arpege! And its MINE, all MINE now! Mwahahahaha. What a small world eh?! PS - is your Starchild long scale??????? Nick X
9.
Was not aware the little markbass II head, (which is what this essentially is) had a limiter: if there is distortion something ain't right in the signal chain....
I agree - if there's a limiter, then thats news to me too! I'd try another bass - if there's still a problem I'd arrange to get the amp checked out by a qualified repair person.
10. Great bass! I had one of these and I let it go - should have kept it! Cheers! Nick
11. What a piece of crap! I think thats the worst bass I've ever seen...! I price it at around 37 pence! I hope they are shill bids on it...
12. ...just spotted my bass in the rack of instruments in the 8th pic in your second lot of piccies - the bass is third from the left - all naked, bare wood!
13. Might just drop in to John's sometime soon....! Be interesting to see the string spacing on yours - my Alembic (name dropping again) has a very narrow spacing and it plays itself - I take it that your Starchild is long scale - the neck looked slightly shorter in the pics - may just have been the angle etc Once I get sorted money-wise, Im going to get John to build me a new bass, based on the GA24 but slightly modded, with a medium scale neck. I love the tone of the GA bass, mainly due to the pickup placement - since I've got the Classic, (and the Calibas and a Roadie!) will be nice to have something different! Miss my cherry-yoghurt GA...!
14. Allo! Just to add to whats already been said - check my equipment page! http://www.freewebs.com/doctor_bass Out of all my gear, the 2 x 10" combo gets used most of all, normally on its own but having the two other cabs means that I can mix and match depending on the gig. I've had the 2 x 10" combo since 2005 and its performed admirably (it was one of the very first batch in the `wasp' livery) - first ever gig with it was with a very loud blues band with two guitar players. A guy comes up to me at half time - `....bass is a bit loud mate!'. Normally I would have asked him to check the weather outside but I thought `YES!!!!!' Rich - I'm back!
15. Is Morgan Rousell a member here!? I've been to his flat in Paris and that is the place to go if you want to see some serious bass guitars! Most of MK's basses live there...
16. Wahey! Superb stuff Matt (Moo!) - I'm not at ALL envious (he says)! (...should get Neptune/Aqua back soon from John in the new livery! - sorry 4000, she's going trans cherry red). Er, not sure if Thom has ever owned the original Starchild, he does however own the very first JayDee bass that was built for Richard Ford - #001. Mark King sold the Starchild to the Bass Centre and it was bought in '98 by Morgan! Its a very heavy bass, the Kahler trem adds some weight. Are you getting hexagonal knobs on yours? Looks fantastic - really great! Thom's Starchild is obviously not an exact replica but its a lovely bass all the same! Cheers! Nick
17. Recall them (Spandex Bullet) on Live Aid in '85 - he was definitely playing his Wal and it was certainly live - he came on and did a very quick `dagada baa bap' style slap and pull motif - I think the rumour may be testic Les!
18.
All of these look like the same bass - just in different colours. I wouldn't mind a go though.
...you heathen you! Prepare to be severely punished! Bring forth the `Early Tapes'. Good to see Dave here! Nice knobs - I've got cocobolo ones on my Classic - all the controls including th EQ knobs. The Calibas 6 (fretted) was originally on Ebay...the fretless is hopefully being acquired by a relative of mine very soon! Nick
19. Lovely basses there Dave! Love the emerald finish!
20.
Have you checked that the light is working? sounds to me that you are overloading the input.
..thats exactly what I said!!
21. +1 Superb value for the money!
22. Welcome! Just received an Aria Laser Heritage today! Woohoo! GAS eh?! Interesting fact, Geezer Butler's real name is Terry!
23. Do it Rich! You know you want too! x
24. The strange thing is that when Mark originally bought his very first JayDee (from Sounds in Charing Cross Road in 1980) he found it perfect for him even though it was the wide bodied Series I model. Later on, he tried a bass that John Diggins had built for Steve Brezicki (sp) brother of Mark (Big Country), a session bassist. Steve's bass was the smaller bodied Series II so Mark asked John to build a similar one (in a black body colour). However, after having received this bass, Mark felt that he actually preferred the bigger Series I bass; he then received the famous `Starchild' bass (another Series I) in '81. The bass I owned was bought by Mark off of one of John Diggins work colleagues for £100!!! I was surprised when the original Kingbass was unveiled, bearing the above in mind!
