1. I had an HB-8 Great fun and works well in a power trio. But didn't find a great use otherwise.
2. As above. Charity gigs / the village fairs etc should be viewed as a loss leader- they inevitibably lead to more gigs. Make sure you hang around and talk to people after and before though - get involved in the day etc.
3. http://basschat.co.uk/forum/84-bassists-available/ might get you more responses
4.
looks like joint second to me Bilbo !
Optimist vs Pessimist?
5.
Good..!
That post, followed by Have a nice day made me spit coffee.... All the entries were top quality, and make me very jealous!
6.
Good man. Have you received my cheque yet..?
It bounced
7. Ok, Gone for Skol. Really enjoyed it. My other two were between Lurksalot and Lowdown. Lurksalot nerd sniped me with the morse code and therefore upset me. (I really want to know what it says) Lowdown really enjoyed the main theme.
8. Hm. I haven't decided yet. I've goti t down to 3 to choose from. so half way to getting a vote in place.....
9. Most of the time we dont even know.... And agree with the goalkeepers - it takes a certain type of crazy to be a goalkeeper
10. And of course, in between round and flats is the Ground/half round. Personally, I found that the D'Addario Half Rounds have a great tension and great sound for my one of my basses and it works perfectly for the theatre show I'm doing at the moment.
11. And one important thing is that you then stop yourself from sliding down strings - for example if you have say E to E octve down (fret 7 of A string to open E) - then you must learn to use the alternate finger rather then slide from the string above. Good example - Bon Jovi Livin on a Prayer In tab form, It is all too tempting to go L R R L R L R L G|-------------------| D|o-----------------o| A|o---7---5-------5-o| E|--0---7---0-0-7----| should be : L R L R L R L R G|-------------------| D|o-----------------o| A|o---7---5-------5-o| E|--0---7---0-0-7----| Paradiddles are good too , like above just do it on a desk or something at work (and wind up your colleagues)
12. Thanks for this thread. I've had to learn for a show i'm doing next week, and have spent 2-3 hours a night learning to read again. I 've got to the point i'm happy with the score, but needed material for further practise afterward which this thread will be great for. +1 thanks
13. All down to the drummer. Although it is so rare that I hear people playing the proper bassline so who knows. The verse is actually very good for practising making sure you alternate fingers and don't slide from A string to E string with one finger
14. Another one for you That song from the morrisons advert.... Again its 1/4s not 1/8s though.
15.
There are variations? No one told me Where are they? Actually don't worry, I don't play this song...phew! (I actually said no to a rehearsal recently when I saw Dakota was on their set list...and Sex on Fire)
I used to hate this song. And also lacked the discipline to play just roots ---- sometimes I'd do octave chords in the chorus to thicken it up a bit.....
16. The engineer in me is screaming run everything through pa. It makes is so. So. So so much nicer on stage. Even better is electric drum kits.
17. try these two sites pal. http://www.joinmyband.co.uk/classifieds/cambridgeshire-f102.html https://www.facebook.com/cambridgeshire.musicians?fref=ts
18. Hi Guys I'm a bassist of an intermediate level based in Cambridge (I know some music theory etc but not really pro level) looking for something long term to get my teeth into. To keep it interesting i'm going to be straight to the point and put down some things below. Things I like: Ideally people of similar age (late twenties) Covers - Either themed (eg 80's , 90's , pop ) or generic "function" - i'm not too bothered about classic rock or metal Being prepared and having learnt stuff in advance Not having to deal with bookings, however more than happy to put the effort into the behind the scenes stuff - eg facebook pages, websites, video/audio/photo editing, calendars etc to aid with booking, just not a good salesman. My Car and Equipment - always working and prepared. (Rig see below) Quieter stages - With the modern day PA stuff there is very little reason to ever have loud stage volumes, and I value my ears due to my job. Music - Almost all types Things I dislike: People who can't spend 2/3 hours a week learning 3-5 songs Screamo / Heavy Metal , Classic Rock (although in moderation it's ok, I don't want to spend 3 hours of it). Things I've done in the past: Indie Function band - Went on for about 4 years and was very tight. Singer had baby and it all just fizzled out slowly 80s Band - went on for a couple of years, very good and tight however was too far away for rehearsals (over an hour by train/drive) and was costing too much. 7 piece funk/soul - Fantastic band playing a mixture of stuff and putting our own spin. Great musicians however no-one had the business acumen to get it going properly. Couple of theatre gigs, couple of short notice deps (happy to learn 50 songs in a week if needed ) I'm based in center of Cambridge. Hope this isn't too much to ask for above!
19. AS above, i think i know someone who may be free but have you got anyone ?
20. +1 to most points above - a few lessons is always helpful - if you get the technique right early on then you dont need to psend hours trying to fix it later. Doesn't matter what bass you play - everyone is different, although you may find that a bass teacher may suggest something different based on your body shape though later on (eg I find thin necked basses cramp my wrists up as i'm a big bloke) , at a beginner level it makes no odds - if you dont like the look of it you wont enjoy playing it.
21. As has been said in this thread already. They generally seem to use guys in cars and vans on a self employed basis. The guy for them that delivers to us is a really nice guy with a gammy leg. He lives round the corner and always delivers to us last on way home as he knows that we are out working til 5 and it's not worth the effort for a failed delivery on his part. It seems to vary massively
22. Cambridge - Portland Arms is a pretty good venue - worth a look. Also "The Corner House" . There are quite a few bands similar genre too who would tend to play portland arms.
23. I know its a bit late now, but the Line 6 G30 goes down to the lowest of bass frequencies , well within budget.
24. Welcome Planer On a semi serious note, if you are worried that your amp is too small, rather than a 3rd bass, get a bigger amp Loads of great deals on the site too!
25. Depends. I try and argue for soundman every gig we do as I know what a massive difference it makes - I used to run sound for a function band, and you do need constant supervision and adjustments on the gear. Not much help, I dont get my way a lot of the smaller gigs .
