1.
Try here: http://stefanredtenbacher.com/transcriptio...-AintNobody.pdf
Thanks - I've been struggling with this one. I find it difficult trying to emulate the keyboard bass part - are there any good versions with bass guitar parts (say on Youtube) that people can recommend?
2. Count me in after Mr Sibs if it isn't sold. Great idea. Cheers, Martin.
3. There's one of these in Northern Guitars in Leeds for £650 at the moment. Yours looks in better condition. Wish I could afford it - I have a 1975 Vibrolux Reverb that would look lovely next to this! Good luck with the sale.
4. This is excellent stuff. I'm looking forward to your section on compound time. Whilst I understand it myself, I've never been very successful at explaining it to anyone else - not using words anyhow!
5. I have a 1970s Colorsound Tonebender that works great with bass. Good for long fuzzy drone sounds, and plenty of bass tone coming through. By an amazing coincidence, I've just today seen one for sale at Northern Guitars in Leeds. He wants £100 for it, but he says its not working and would probably take £50. If you know someone who has some of the required skills to fix it, that's a bargain. And (aside from not working) its in much better nick than mine.

Hi
a good setup will sort that action problem for you. Welcome
Thanks for the welcome. I'll get round to sorting the action eventually - I don't play it much, and quite like the fact that it makes me work hard.

Hi
The Rockbass is fullscale, surely?
Thanks. Yes it is full scale, and its hard work! Very high action and heavy strings aren't helping. Good for practice though.

Hi

Hi, I stumbled across this site last year after answering an newspaper ad to join a local functions band as a bass player. I’m usually a guitarist but have always had a bass lying around at home and seriously got the bass bug when I filled in at short notice at a local jam night last year. The forum has already been an immensely valuable source of information as I embark on my bass playing career. You are a bunch of truly passionate and insanely knowledgeable people! I play a 1970’s Fender Musicmaster bass that I bought in 1988 or thereabouts. I also have a defretted Warwick Rockbass that occasionally gets some use. I’d like to upgrade to a Jazz in due course (but I’m not sure how I’ll handle a full scale bass). I’m currently playing through the PA for band practices and will be buying an amp at some stage soon. (All gigs with the band thus far have been filling in for the indisposed guitarist so I haven’t needed a bass amp yet). Whilst the forum has provided a lot of information to help me purchase the right rig, I remain somewhat overwhelmed by the number of fundamental choices – combo, separates, pre-amp and PA/monitors…! I play rockabilly, country, rock’n’roll etc on guitar (and make no apologies for doing so!). I prefer to play Motown / ballads on the bass. Favourite basslines are “Ball of confusion” (Temptations) and “Sing Harpy” (The Fall). Favourite bass part is “What becomes of the broken-hearted” (Jimmy Ruffin) for its diligent avoidance of the root. I also play and teach piano and passed grade 8 music theory when a youngster and still remember most of it. I’m happy to help out with any theory questions that seem to arise now and then. That’s me! Thanks for all the help provided thus far, and I look forward to learning more. Cheers, Martin
9.
And while we're there: Wings, Behind the Counter, Bombast, Middlemass... They never recovered after Shanley got the boot.
Well, Blindness is post Hanley and not too bad. But you're right of course.
10. Ball of Confusion - the Temptations. Also nicely done by Tina Turner with the BEF. Sing Harpy by The Fall.
11. I too need an amp. Has anyone tried the Hiwatt B300 15 combo that seems to be quite affordable at the moment? Many thanks for your advice.
12. Singing/humming is good advice. I remember reading that Jaco used to have his bass on his lap whilst watching TV and used to play along with the theme music / adverts / whatever. Good idea, because you're dealing with familiar stuff mostly, and just doing it almost subconsciously. I agree very much with something someone else said further up - reading tabs is no way to learn how to play on the fly - you have to listen to stuff and play along.
13. I think the best way to create a good walking bassline is to sing it first. That will give you the musical feel you want, without being constrained by any technical limitations. Then play what you sing. Knowing the theory - particularly the right notes to use to modulate between keys etc - makes it quicker and easier to play it. But whether you know the theory or not, by singing it you'll find those correct notes naturally. Well, that's my humble opinion.
14. I have 2 basses. A 1972 Fender Musicmaster and a defretted Rockbass. Not sure which is my main one - probably the Fender.

Peavey Pro 500

Thanks - its new but sort of demo/bankrupt stock, I think.

Peavey Pro 500

Did you buy this? I have a chance of getting one (Pro 500) for £399 - is that good value? I'm only going to be playing weddings etc but it seems like a great amp. I'd only want to use one cab with it (2x10) - any suggestions? Many thanks, Martin.
17. How old is the amp? I'm auditioning for a functions band next week, and if I get the gig, this would probably be ideal.
