1.
Well done, son. Can I ask where you did this? I have wanted to do these grades for years but don't know where to go to do them (I left school in 1806).
All the information is available on the Associate Board site: http://www.abrsm.org/?page=exams/index.html I have grade 8 theory, and grade 6 on the violin, viola and piano. IMO it's all well worth doing. I've been working towards grade 8 on the piano in the last couple of years but its slow going. Congrats Matthew, and keep going.
2.
It is? I tried counting it in 4 and it just wouldn't fit. Stick it on your ipod and go for a walk, the 'one' is alternately on left and right foot. Maybe i have odd feet...
Nick the Stripper is in 5/4, and a mighty fine tune.
3. Thanks Phil for organising this. Sorry I couldn't stay longer, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Waterontyne's basses were my favourite - I guess that makes me some kind of old fashioned purist! Thanks again, Martin PS what did ticket 30 win???
4. Its a yay for me. I bought 8:30 Live on the basis of a review when I was a teenager, just at the point when I was in danger of getting into prog rock. It saved my life! That album, and Heavy Weather are both favourites. The whole band are excellent, but Jaco's understanding of meolody and counterpoint are extraordinary. I've never really listened to his work with Joni Mitchell, but will do so based on what I've read in this thread.
5. STICKER please. I'm not planning on bringing anything along, unless anyone specifically wants to try any of the following: 1970's (can't remember which year) Fender Musicmaster 1970's Sola Sound Tonebender BYOC Envelope Filter Also have a Monte Allum modified CS3 and a Hotcake if anyone wants to try these out. Cheers, Martin
6. Another good one is Move it on Over - Hank Williams did it best. Just straight rockabilly really.
7.
the other supports were the minutemen and ukdecay .. i saw them at the leadmill, sheffield.. it was so loud i went out and vomited.. hold on a miute you jmust have been in quite a well known band to be offered that one.. hmm. i wonder who? ;-)
No. It was in New Zealand. We had some sort of acquaintance with the promotor. In fact we were totally the wrong sort of band to support either headliner - the DK's crowd would have torn us to shreds! The same promoter later offered us a support slot for U" which we turned down.
8.
Got to love the DK's
O h yeah. Turned down the chance to support them once (in 1981 or so) in favour of Iggy (was offered one or the other). Unfortunately Iggy fell ill at short notice and cancelled the gig.
9. Punk at its best. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz1sBi0-130
10. Its quite hard to hear the bassline on the original record - I think it was played on double bass?
11.
Regarding country bass, I believe it was Dave Pomeroy who said, "Think of the simplest thing you can play and play half of that." Care to post the list of tunes you're working on?
+1. What are the songs?
12. Have a listen to 'She' be Gram Parsons, a lesson in country/ballad bass playing. No idea who the player is. Major scales, root and fifth, minor scales when required. Martin PS Good luck with the audition.
13. Welcome. Kiwi here, but based in UK since 1987. Hope they're treating you well.
14. Playing rhythm guitar is perfectly acceptable, if done inconspicuously, in the comfort of your own home etc... Lead guitar on the other hand...damnation seems insufficiently harsh punishment!
15.
+1 on Mike Watt, also Rob Wright of Nomeansno, they're the reason i started playing bass.
This thread is bringing back some great memories. I also saw No Means no at some stage. Also Husker Du, Bad Brains, Dinosaur jr, (saw Mike Watt with J Mascis more recently), Mudhoney, Tad, Harr Crews (with Kim Gordon on bass). Some great US bands at that time.
16. I'm a good reader (grade 8 theory), with a good feel, but average technical ability thus far. My approach to learning a new song is: 1) Listen to the record and work it out by ear. 2) If I'm stuck, try to get hold of a transcription (proper notation). 3) If that's not available, have a look on youtube (unbelievably useful re fingering problems IMO) 4) An absolute last resort, find tabs. Its a last resort, and rarely required, but has proved useful a couple of times. A good ear is essential even if you are a good reader. Being able to read opens up all sorts of learning opportunities. Martin
17.
Thats a really good shout, fantastic bass player... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jd-VSJ0pQ9g
+1 I was lucky enough to see him play in Firehose many years ago. One of the best gigs ever.
18.
Behind The Counter! Lie dream of a casino soul! Bombast!
Oh Brother! Tempo House. Container Drivers.
19. Thanks for the info. I've seen double basses with the extended fingerboard, but never a 5 string. This place edifies consistently.
20. OK, thanks. Sounds like a sad and lonely death. http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/inde...und-dead-at-60/
21. That's tragic, he'd been looking really well (considering his history!).
22.
probably no difference. but i voted 4 cause, you know, they're better.
Me too. Has there ever been a 5-string double bass?
