1. Welcome. Kiwi here, but based in UK since 1987. Hope they're treating you well.
2. Playing rhythm guitar is perfectly acceptable, if done inconspicuously, in the comfort of your own home etc... Lead guitar on the other hand...damnation seems insufficiently harsh punishment!
3.
+1 on Mike Watt, also Rob Wright of Nomeansno, they're the reason i started playing bass.
This thread is bringing back some great memories. I also saw No Means no at some stage. Also Husker Du, Bad Brains, Dinosaur jr, (saw Mike Watt with J Mascis more recently), Mudhoney, Tad, Harr Crews (with Kim Gordon on bass). Some great US bands at that time.
4. I'm a good reader (grade 8 theory), with a good feel, but average technical ability thus far. My approach to learning a new song is: 1) Listen to the record and work it out by ear. 2) If I'm stuck, try to get hold of a transcription (proper notation). 3) If that's not available, have a look on youtube (unbelievably useful re fingering problems IMO) 4) An absolute last resort, find tabs. Its a last resort, and rarely required, but has proved useful a couple of times. A good ear is essential even if you are a good reader. Being able to read opens up all sorts of learning opportunities. Martin
5.
Thats a really good shout, fantastic bass player... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jd-VSJ0pQ9g
+1 I was lucky enough to see him play in Firehose many years ago. One of the best gigs ever.
6.
Behind The Counter! Lie dream of a casino soul! Bombast!
Oh Brother! Tempo House. Container Drivers.
7. Steve Hanley.
8. Thanks for the info. I've seen double basses with the extended fingerboard, but never a 5 string. This place edifies consistently.
9. OK, thanks. Sounds like a sad and lonely death. http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/inde...und-dead-at-60/
10. That's tragic, he'd been looking really well (considering his history!).
11.
probably no difference. but i voted 4 cause, you know, they're better.
Me too. Has there ever been a 5-string double bass?

Cables

Can you recommend some decent quality angled jacks that aren't too expensive?
13. +1 on the Tonebender - you can get a kitset for reasonable £ at byoc. What about a Crowther Hotcake? I use Hotcake and tonebender (an old 70s one) and get a great range of sounds.
14. I've found them very prompt and helpful when I recently ordered a capo that was out of stock. The login/account part of the website is sh*te but it all seems to work out ok despite that.
15.
Played there a few weeks ago, nice easy load in through the back door, easy set up area and plenty of room to move. Nice and friendly audience who were up for a dance as well so you should have a good gig. What's the name of your band ??
Alison Raven Band. I played there a couple of months ago with a big crowd of people we'd brought along. Was a good gig. Not really bringing anyone tonight - no idea what the locals are like.
16. Yep, gigging at the Harlow in Harrogate. With a very experienced dep drummer (our regular drummer has a gig with his other band). Looking forward to it.
17. Some great stuff on here - the Jan Garbarek is particularly good. Thanks for posting.
18. PM'd.

Great tracks all - thanks for these. The Fat Back Band especially!

Funk

I'm so in the mood for some funk, but am at work. I'll check these out tonight.
21. Well, whatever you reasons, and no matter how valid they are, do you really think you can go through life without ever needing a doctor? You have to come to terms somehow with your issues. Have you never seen a doctor you trusted? Who was helpful? Ever?
22. Somehow I didn't expect you to listen to any good advice.
23. Listen to Mewsie, she's talking great sense. Rest your wrist, get over your anger and see a doctor. The one thing you don't want is permanent damage. Martin
24. Sibelius is the de facto standard, but is very expensive (although there is a student licence available). I've used one called Mozart in the past (http://www.mozart.co.uk/) which has plenty of features but is still a little clunky to use. I think its great value for money though compared to Sibelius. Martin
25. I started in piano, then violin, then guitar, then bass. I still play guitar (in a punk/garage band) and bass in a functions band. I tend to play piano or guitar at home. I prefer to play rock/punk on guitar, and soul/ballads/country on bass. But its all good. I have 2 Rickenbacker 360 guitars (6 and 12 string), an old Maton Alver, an Ibanez acoustic, a cheapo strat copy and cheapo classical guitar. And a ukelele and a mandolin. The cheapo strat gets played most often at home. Basses are a 70s Fender Musicmaster and a defretted Warwick Rockbass. Nearly all my gigs are on bass now, so I'm looking to upgrade, probably to a Lakland Duck Dunn.
