Best in rubbish band or worst in great band?
cheddatom replied to T-Bay's topic in General Discussion
I've just started on guitar in a band and I'm definitely the weakest player. No-one seems to mind but I feel like I don't really have much to contribute. Hopefully it'll just be a matter of time before I "get it" I play drums in a band with a sh*t-hot guitarist, and sh*t-hot bassist, but then the front man attempts harmonica so I'm not the worst player I play bass in a band where I'm definitely better than the other guys - on their instruments too! But that band is about having a laugh and making awesome noisy music with my mates, and I love it -
Why does high action sound better than low?
Whats everyones definition of choking.?
This is a weird one but... if you strike a tom tom with a drum stick, but "bury" the stick - leave it touching the head - this chokes the sound and you get less of the note. If you let the stick bounce off after hitting the head, the drum sounds out properly. That's what I mean by "choking" and it's a similar effect on my basses -

I feel like if I play a bass with a sufficiently high action, the note gets to it's "fullest" quicker than a bass with a low action - same on guitar. Again I'm probably just imagining things -

forgetting pickups and magnetic fields, I'm convinced I can hear the differences acoustically - am I just imagining this? -

I agree, sounds better, lower action sounds "choked" as discreet says, no idea if there's any truth in it -
... the objection is not about being 'ogled'...
Quite a few posters in here seem to have equated the wolf whistling and "smutty comments" with simply looking. Looking at/watching the dancers is fine. Whistling and making smutty comments is unacceptable, surely?

the quieter you listen, the less "bass" (I guess 40-200Hz) you'll hear. Without changing the EQ at all, but simply by turning everything up, you'll hear more bass. Combine this with the fact you're monitoring on headphones which will have a totally different response to your amp and cab in a room a distance away from your ears, you can see why what you're trying to do is actually impossible.
-
you perceive bass differently at different volume levels. It's important to set your pedals plugged into your amp, turned up to gigging volume

A couple of festivals - brilliant on Friday night, ace sound, great venue, great audience. Saturday night was a similar sized affair but the stage was tiny, I managed to whack my head on the lights a few times, only the kick drum was mic'd up on the kit but even that wasn't cutting through... still, appreciate little audience and I got to see Lozz's band Knock Off play their last few songs - Tight as can be and a brilliant sound from them (they were on a different stage)

www.headsticks.co.uk I did it with the guitarist doing some of the graphics. I host it with 123-reg. I don't think it attracts attention from promoters or venues, but it's popular with fans to find gigs, and to buy tickets, music, or merch. We do quite a lot of sales though the site.

Cool. A mate of mine has nicked the whole Waves SSL package apparently, so I'll give it a go on his system before I shell out
-
sounds cool, great playing too! When you say they're better than the stuff you get as standard in DAWs, which DAWs have you tried? And do you think you're just finding it easier to get the result you want with the Waves plugins? As in it would be possible to do with the built in VSTs but it might take you longer? I stopped adding VSTs to my system a couple of years ago as I found I was messing about too much switching between different EQs or different Compressors, rather than just using the tool in front of me to do what I want. I do love the idea of SSL channels in my DAW though

Rebellion festival yesterday. We were first on in the arena stage. It's such a good festival but I had a wedding to attend the night before, and my lift had to shoot off straight after so I didn't really get to experience the atmosphere much, or see any other bands. Anyway, it was ace, great sound guys, great gear, I'm on drums and the shared kit was freshly skinned and well tuned which is brilliant
Thank you so far !!! Now if you had my equipment how would you set it up? Sorry but I'm new at this and I'm sure u guys can help . Also please use easy terminology as English is not my first language and I struggled when we talk recording gear stuff;-)
Well if you get the ADA8200, you connect this to your interface, then you plug your mics into the ADA8200 and point the mics at the sound source(s) you want to record
-
that is way overkill lol. TWO mics on the snare. Plenty of great mixers can record drums with 3 mics, snare, kick and toms/cymbals. seriously. youtube has lots of how tos on this subject https://www.youtube....eature=youtu.be https://www.youtube....0&v=Kxcufuj-OCE
Yep, I've done plenty of that, but I like choices, and micing the snare top and bottom really helps. Sometimes I'll have two mics on the top and one on the bottom. It's not overkill lol, it's giving yourself maximum flexibility
-
no the ADA8200 has pre-amps in it (much like your mixer) but outputs each channel individually in digital data via the ADAT link into your interface A mixer is generally used to mix multiple inputs down to one or two channels - E.G your live PA. You don't want to do that as you want to be able to process each channel individually after you've recorded I do actually use a mixer in my studio, but I take the Direct Outputs of each channel, and feed them into my audio interface which can accept up to 24 analogue inputs, so I'm not really using the master bus of my mixer
...Having a hit is media driven (exposure and image) rather than content driven and how good something is musically is almost entirely academic.
I couldn't agree more, well said

I wouldn't know if it'll overheat sorry. I've never had a problem and used to push the same (Boss) PSU to the max. It might be worth getting a better PSU anyway as you'll then be able to expand in the future
-
some will work but with weird artefacts. My DD-20 seems to work fine but all the lights go off - if I don't have enough current on the daisy chain A lot of pedals are rated with a higher current than they really need If it sounds OK and works - who cares?!
Nice "fans"!
I think there might have been some alchohol involved - neither of them will remember I'm sure :/

It looks like you have a 2 channel interface already. You need an interface that can record enough channels. For each mic you also need a pre-amp. You can get interfaces with built in pre-amps, which is probably the most cost effective way for you to go. There are loads to choose from. Also some of these new digital mixers tend to have USB for multi-channel interface - I think the Behringer X32 does this? For drums, I like 1 mic on the kick, 2 on the snare, 1 for each tom, 2 overheads, 1 or two room, and occasionally a hi-hat mic. Figure out the number of channels you need and then look for an interface to match. The Tascam US-16x08 looks like good value to me! I'm not sure whether you'd want thunderbolt rather than USB - don't know much about Macs, hopefully someone else will help on that front
