1.
His tone isn't my favourite, but JJ is playing on one of my favourite records of all time, Erma Franklin's Piece Of My Heart.
Beautiful. The playing in that chorus is illustrative of what I love about his style. He has a lovely ability to distribute the notes of the scale (with the odd chromatic run) within a bar in an odd yet funky way. Jaco quoted him as an influence, and when listening to 'Come on Come Over', you can really tell.
2. Welcome Joel, great of you to brave the BC world! I'm at the end of my subscription, and am on the fence regarding whether to renew. here are some of my BGM musings: - The Bassically speaking section: Obviously the players are given a list of questions to answer, such as 'do you play 5 or 6 string basses', 'do you slap', 'what was your first bass', etc. All these people are doing is answering the questions honestly. If a reader gets so wound up by their answers, I'd suggest that the issue lies with some of their own insecurities! Maybe you subconsciously wish you were as rock n roll as them :-) - Positive reviews: Do any manufacturers turn out a truly dire instrument in these days? As far as I can see, the reviews are mostly positive because the instruments are good for their price bracket. I've seen plenty of examples where a BGM review has highlighted areas for improvement. Oddly though, there sometimes seems to be little correlation between the written content and the number of stars awarded when it comes to 'value for money'. - Joel, your 'woodshed' section had suddenly improved tenfold! It seems to have suddenly changed to content that I can understand and is relevant to my playing. Come to think of it, I might renew that description, if only to have something decent to read on the toilet (no offence intended Joel, that is my sanctuary, my sole opportunity to read anything these days)
3. JJ deserves his own thread. Two of my favourite albums are Aretha live at the Filmore West, and BB King's Live and Well. A master class in groovy bass playing. That is all. Apart from this video.. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0Loy55z4GpA
4. http://db.tt/0f7LBvS5 A one-off reunion gig for uni mates. Great gig it was too Sorry for the link, really struggling to do stuff on iPad
5. Ah yes, I remember now that John C refers all SS stuff to the other John
6. I have a six-month 'cool-off' period. If I still want it after that, then it's worth serious consideration. So far, very few GAS attacks have lasted anywhere near that long
7. It won't be long before the new Barefaced 6x10 sealed cab comes out.....
8. Thanks very much - I appreciate the comments. All going well, we'll be in the studio again soon to record another seven songs!
9.
Firstly, i have not received any PMs or even know what a PM is.
A PM is a Personal Message. Look at the little envelope at the top right of your page. Alternatively, look at the "Personal Messenger" section in your profile. From my point of view, "Hand Built in the UK" suggests that the bodies and necks have been created in the UK. Not CNC, but a human with bandsaw/router etc.
10. When I first started getting properly into music (around 13) it was The Cure. This one is still great. Atmospheric, understated and very cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhgo11KokxE

12. Gig #3 The Golden Fleece, Mansfield Rd, Nottingham 2nd August
13. I love that bass BRX, is the hardware chrome or brass/gold?
14.
Well , that was the worst gig I have ever played , in 20 years of playing live I've never had so many things go wrong on in one set ! Proper gutted as it was the first outing for the Stingray5
The ray is obviously cursed. Burn it.
15. OBBM etc. etc. Glad to hear that you're loving the Wild Thing, great looking basses.
16. If you're talking about toughening up the fingertips, practice practice practice. Meths can help with this too. http://www.pluckandp...fingertips.html Worked with my feet when preparing for Duke of Ed hikes at school

18. One of the songs on our demo got onto the radio tonight. BBC's "The Beat" (regional show) in their "BBC Introducing" section. Big thumbs up from the DJ/team, good feedback on texts into the show, and promise to play us again in future shows.
19. She's fantastic. Check out this badass pick playing: She's friendly too, and has been gracious enough to reply to an e-mail with info on some songs she played on. Legend.
20. If you found the sound too middy and lacking in top end like you say, try rolling the VLE right off and turning up the VPF, as this will cut the mids and boost the lows and highs. I'm sure you've done all this, so maybe it's just the overall tone that doesn't sit with you. That or your brain telling your ears that such an ugly colour scheme has no rightful place in your life :-)
21. While we're suggesting venues, check out The Wardrobe in Leeds. I reckon that would be right up your street. Edit: not literally, as it's in Leeds and you're from London :-)
22. Welcome to BC
23. I'm with you on the valve thing. Welcome to BC
