1. I always thought Nick Fyffe got a raw deal. Just reminded me what a cool line this is.
2. I don't know about string spacing but your font is killing my eyes :-)
3. Dave, have really enjoyed your last few YouTube vids. The sound has been exceptional and I love the Darby fly-on-the-wall recording session vids. Really good seeing someone nail it with a little bit of tasty danger chucked in there. Your Sei sounds killing in the live vids too- really top notch. Very tasty playing in Red Baron- super restrained.
4. The topic and the perceived age of you all suggested that I may not like this (sweeping generalisation!) 10-12 yrs playing is all good but that's still plenty of time to learn bad habits like over-playing and self indulgence. It should all be about the music, the song, the melody, the groove and how people play together to serve the aforementioned. But you know this. Good work.
5. Big fan of Dirty Loops AND Uriah Duffy. Top bloke- great humour, and a good muso from what I've seen.
6. Not sure if "You're The One That I Want" is in the original score but the movie soundtrack version has a great bassline.
7. Wow. Those bass pieces may be grade 8 but, without wishing to offend, they're certainly not played at what I would consider a Grade 8 standard. No feel whatsoever. I have put some students through Rockschool exams and my jaw has hit the floor at some of the results.
8. I donated 20 dollars earlier today. I just felt like it. I like Chuck Rainey and I like Ed Friedland. (I also like Janek Gwizdala- he used to post on here but soon disappeared because of the kind of negativity which seems to prevail at times.) Merry Christmas.
9. Happened to me for the first time a few months back. Got the trotskis 30 mins before gig. Thought I'd be fine. 20 mins into the set my stomach starts churning again. The pressure built and built, I started to sweat, span a bit, held on for as long as I could before looking at the keyboard player and mouthing for him to cover me as there was no way I was crapping or chundering in front of singers, dancers, and a big audience. I ran off after a number and went to the lav. The next 2 songs were spent with me...err.. Well you know. Managed to run back on to finish the set and afterwards picked up from where I left off in the loo. Nasty. The first time in 22yrs anything like that has happened to me.
10. I've followed this guy on YouTube for quite a while now- because for this clip. A really talented gospel musician. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yiGDsLsA8o&feature=g-all-u&context=G2122d4aFAAAAAAAADAA
11. Oh pants, I have a PCI Firewire card unopened which you could've had for pennies- I got it bundled in with my Pro 40 funnily enough. You won't be disappointed- as has been mentioned they are a good piece of kit.
12.
I very nearly bought this bass from Nick when he first had it up for sale a few years ago, and I can attest to its light weight. If only it had a maple board! Best of luck with the sale.
Me too- well it was offered! Quite a few years ago. I popped down to London and into the Gallery- Paul Turner was selling his, I had a phonecall from a mate of Nick Fyffe who worked there at the time but ended up buying a 55-94 that belonged to Wayne Stobbard who played with Simply Red. Great basses. My main bass for over 10 yrs now.
13. I suppose the 'synthetic' backing sells the songs and gets the airplay which inturn gets people to buy tickets to see the live gig and, bam, there's your live band with huge mother***ing arrangements and all sorts of gospel stuff to boot. The only downside is that whenever I have seen these kind of bands, all those tasty stabs, unison lines, chords subs etc get lost in the crappy acoustics of the venue they are playing- you have to wait for the live DVD or the YouTube clip of the rehearsal etc +1 on what the general vibe is here though. Live gigs are about entertainment- the best know how to entertain their fans and casual admirers.
14. His covers are usually great- Frankenstein, Boogie On, Burnin Down The House etc. This one isn't one of his best- at least it allows him a funky solo in Em. Love that slightly broken sound he gets. Is it just me but every time I see Dean Brown play I think of Damon Hill??
15.
I think I read the synth was set at 44.1kHz instead of 48kHz or vise-versa or something along those lines, twas a technical f*** up rather than the chaps being able to play the right notes on the guitar.
S'wat I heard too- bless EVH for bending as much as he could- the backing track is pretty much a semitone out. They must have done that song so much that they would have known something was up the minute the keys riff kicked in. Bassist almost gives up too.
16. I think Garageband was developed as a means of selling the iPad 2. It's just not that practical- but still good fun initially.
17. At 19 maybe he could try to see the bigger picture and go to music college first as it could present more options for careers later. Having said that I know nothing of fees etc.
18.
Do you mean K&M by any chance?
Think I took a wild stab in the dark at that one. Could have got B&Q, M&S, or BLT for that matter :-)
19. ForScore (in conjunction with Airturn page turner) Noteshelf for setlists and other bits. Tempo for a metronome (was really handy when MDing for a tempo-mad, super segue act) iReal B PDF printer Goodreader Avid Scorch I've never used 3.5mm jack things for live- any clicks come from iTunes via FW interface but the iPad has made reading on stage a lot more discreet. B&W do a good clamp that fits on a mic stand.
20. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhh!! I LOVE THIS SH*T!!!!!!!
21. This has been covered before but I'll say it again- I am a fan. Love it. Self-indulgent and frilly and produced and I love it even more. Try this- skip to about 0.57 and watch it all- even past the speaking etc- insane drumming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b1djIjCeOc&feature=share&fb_source=message
22. You know what I love about him is that he's not one of these inaccessible players where it's just jaw-on-the-floor chops and technique. It's when you come to play this style of music you realise just how good he is- he's got such a full arsenal of taste at his disposal. Def absorbed the players you mention and more prob but Bernard Edwards big time.
