1. Hi guys! I like these amps so much I ended up with two of them. Now who needs two of the same amp, tell me? I thought it would be a good idea to have a backup, but I was secretly thinking about a monstrous dual amp rig that, frankly, it's never gonna happen, or be needed for that matter. I bought this one new in January 2012. It's got the latest incarnation of the ABM power section which is very powerful and DEAD quite. If you're familiar with the ABM range you know some of the older ones have a bit of a hum going on. Nothing much really, but this one it's as quiet as can be. Even the fans are quieter than in my other amps. These amp has been serviced by my trusted amp tech, Theo Argiriadis, and given a clean bill of health. The valves I always used with these amps are the golden pin Tung Sol's 12AX7. MUCH better than the generic Chinese ones that come with the amp. It's a shame Ashdown didn't ship these amps with better valves. It's makes a big difference. So what you got here is the dual valve preamp found in the Ashdown 427 Small Block combined with the tried and tested ABM power amp. What I really like about the ABMs is that all the notes (even when played on the G string) have all the "weight" that you expect from a bass amp. All the notes are thick and full. This amp preserves that, but in comparison to an ABM I would say it's a got a bit more bite. A bit more presence in the mix. It's a very versatile amp too. The controls interact with each other a lot and there's a lot of tonal options available, specially when using the switches. I found the Spyder has a more vintage sound (in an Orange kinda vibe) with the switches up and a more "modern" sound with the switches down. Using any combination of them gives you a plethora os sounds to choose from. As a final note. I know Ashdown amps get a bad reputation for being "muddy", or "wooly", but I never experienced that. Probably due to the fact that I always used mine, both ABM and Spyder, with good cabs (Aguilar for a while, and Barefaced for most of the time). I got nothing but compliments to my sound when using this amp with my Barefaced S12. It's a killer rig! Of course Ashdowns are not SWR's, so if you're looking for cut-glass treble, you would probably be better of with something else. If you're looking for a BASS amp that sounds like a BASS amp and cuts to any dense mix like a knife, look no further. These are not great amps for the price. They are great amps. Period. So the price is £300 including next day fully insured delivery to anywhere in the UK. I still have the original box and can pack it nicely. You're also more than welcome to bring your bass and cab to try the amp. In case of collection in person I'll let the amp go for £275. Trade wise, I would love to give one of those discontinued Ashdown MiBass 550 a try. Probably a much more sensible alternative for a back up amp then having two of these If you have one and fancy a trade, hit me up! Here's Ashdown's official demo of the Spyder 550. I don't think a youtube video will ever do justice to any amp, but it's a decent reference I guess... It gives a good idea of the character of the amp. Here's a video of me playing this very amp in the studio. The sound you hear is a mix of the amp's di (pre eq) and the mic. Mostly the mic. And here are some pretty average phone pics. Just click on the Dropbox links, please. As usual, I can't upload pics to Basschat. If anyone has any tips on how to make it work, thanks in advance. Cheers, Eddie
2. Great bass man! And welcome to the P-Bass world. PS Try your hand at vintage porn soundtrack too. The P is just made for it
3. Happiness is a talented trusted sound man That's all.
4. Bought a pedal from Ollie and the whole transaction went as smooth as possible. Great pedal, fast communication, bullet proof packaging. Ollie is a pleasure to deal with. Great basschatter. Thanks Ollie!
5. It looks like you need a good overdrive pedal. My search came to and end when I acquired one of these: http://youtu.be/tFfqWnybHEM
6. Bought a great amp from Angie and have nothing but good things to say about the whole transaction. She agreed to put it on hold for me for a few days, packaging was brilliant and good communication. Deal with confidence. Thanks Angie!
7.
I am disapointed to see there are no complaints against the bass player. I think you need to up your game a bit, Far0n!
Exactly!!!
8. Well, regardless of the speaker ratings my personal experience with the OBC115 was very positive. Of course people might have different tonal needs, but I reckon someone looking for a more classic bass sound (like assume is the OP's case) should definitely give the TB500 + OBC115 combo a try.
9.
I found the Orange OBC115 very dark, kind of the hold up example of why people think 15s are just for low end.
Really? I didn't find it dark at all. I compared it to the OBC410 and thought there was a bit of a low mid bump on the OBC115 that I really liked and thought the 410 was a bit hollow sounding. Lots of bottom end in both cabs, but more defined on the 115 in my opinion and I was positively surprised with the articulation on the 115. Of course I ain't no Marcus Miller wannabe
10. I use to have a TB 500 and pair it with the Orange OBC115. One of the best amp/cab combinations I ever tried. So much I ended up getting two OBC115's at some point. It's not the lightest cabinet in the world, but definitely one of the best (if not the best) sounding I ever had. Works so well with the TB I think it's worth a little back ache. Ah... And the TB delivers its full power in both 8 or 4 ohms so if where you I would get an 8ohm cabinet in case you wanna use two cabinets to intimidate the guitar players in your band
11. Someone buy this before I buy another one for no reason other than that they're awesome and I like the idea of two of them stacked on top of each other
12. Hey guys! I've been playing in Mike Marlin's band supporting Huey and the New Yorkers on their current tour. We've been having a great time and there's still some shows to go. Any Basschaters coming? Give me a shout! Here are the last few dates: 15/03 - Nottingham - Rescue Rooms 16/03 - Stoke - Sugarmill 18/03 - Portsmouth - Wedgewood Rooms 19/03 - London - Putney Half Moon 20/03 - Amsterdam - Bitterzoet 21/03 - Leuven - Leuven
13.
Cue David Attenborough voice.... Yes. As their natural habitat (the jazz-funk band) has been continually eroded, these creatures have adapted to a new environment where their cryptic colouration and elusive behaviour blends in well. Beautiful, aren't they?
14. Yeah, I think I got confused here. I think the Spyder has the same preamp as the Small Block 427.
15. Hey! I don't think the preamp has been designed for overdriven sounds. My Spyder still sounds clean with the gain up 'till 3 o'clock. It still doesn't distort after that, I just don't like the way it sounds. I use a passive Fender P by the way.
16. It has the same preamp as my Spyder 550, which I absolutely love. I imagine that those 4 KT88's can only make it even better. I'm really tempted to get one of these babies too.
17. Fender Rumble 210. Absolutely crap in every possible way. I used to own a Fender BXR 300 and it was an awesome combo so I was expecting a lot from the Rumble. Massive disappointment unfortunately.
18. Sold my beautiful P Bass to Simon. Quick communication and smooth transaction. Enjoy the bass Simon!
19. Why does 90% of bass gear videos always have someone slapping away at the speed of light with a ridiculously trebly tone? I'm playing bass professionally for 15 years and not once I was asked by engineers, musical directors, or band members for a sound like that. In what style of music does one use this kind of bass sound? Honest question.
20. I can't believe I'm doing this, but here I have for sale my beloved '77 P Bass. Acquired here last October through a trade with CPBassman. The thing is... I just bought one of those beautiful Honey Burst American Specials and a '65 P-Bass too. Needless to say I haven't got a penny after that mad spending spree and this amazing bass will have to go to a new home. The bass is 100% original, including pickup cover, bridge cover, pick-guard (with the serial number sticker), pots, pickups, bridge, tuners, finish... Everything. I played this bass non-stop since I bought it and just switched to the American Special for live gigs recently because I was planning to use this one and the '65 for recording sessions only. Unfortunately I won't be able to keep this black beauty. Beautifully aged, some dings as expected for a bass that has been played a lot for 35 years, but recently set up with brand new Status rounds (45-105) and it plays great and sounds just like you expect a vintage P-Bass to sound. Fat, creamy, punchy... Lovely! Everything works as it should. This bass is ready to go on tour. Specially because I'm selling it with the G&G Fender hard case that came with it when I got it. It's the only thing that is not original, but it's a reproduction of the vintage Fender cases (and expensive too), so the bass feels perfectly at home in there... I'm asking £1300 collected from EN5 (High Barnet). Wouldn't like to post this, but if you're happy to pay for the courier with insurance I'll pack it nicely and send it to you. I'll post some recent pictures over the weekend. The picture with the bass in its case was taken by CPBassman, hope he doesn't mind me using it. The other one was taken by me. Please note that the Badass bridge it's not on the bass anymore. The bass now has its original bridge on. https://www.dropbox....%2002.02.38.jpg https://www.dropbox....3%2052%2009.jpg Cheers, Eddie
21. Sold Sam a strap and the whole transaction went as smooth as can be. Cheers Sam!
