1. Have you guys seen this? http://www.bonedo.de/artikel/einzelansicht/ashdown-mibass-550.html German website so, obviously, in German. Cool sound clips. Check them out!
2. Try the Ashdown LoMenzo Hyper Drive. It's very tweakable. You can add a lot of distortion, or just a little bit of warmth on top of the note. It's very intuitive and easy to use. You can blend the clean signal with the drive and you can pick the frequency you want to distort and use either a narrow or a broad range. I don't used it like a distortion, I use it exactly for the kind of function you described. I managed to dial such a subtle tone that it's almost impossible to hear the pedal it's even on. You only really notice it when you switch it off and the bass gets a bit lost in the band mix. Great pedal. I love mine. 3. I do think my Super 12 sounds different to all the other cabinets I had. When I got mine I took it straight to a studio where I had rehearsed the day before with the same band, amp and bass. The only difference is that the day before I had the Aguilar GS212. Straight away I noticed I would have to change the eq settings I was used too. With the Aggie I had the controls on my 550 Spyder at noon for bass and treble and a mids at 1 o'clock. With the Super 12 I had to turn the low and treble down to about 10 o'clock and the mids to noon. Alex told me the S12 is not supposed to colour the tone. Obviously, like any new cabinet, it's going to take a bit of tweaking to find the best sound. The main difference I noticed between the Aggie and the S12 is that the Barefaced fills the room a bit more, if that makes sense... It's a cab that spreads the sound of the bass better than any other combination I tried. I really recommend you to give it try. Shame about the time you have to wait for one. But... I guess the enormous demand for them and the fact that you never see a second hand one says a lot.
4. The number of the beast - Iron Maiden N.I.B. - Black Sabbath Dazed and Confused - Led Zep Just to give a little something to the rockers in the crowd. Loving all the suggestions so far. Like Flea said, bass is THE party instrument!
5.
I've got an Ampeg SVT6Pro. I've only just got it, but I've had the gain just clipping and the master on 7-8 to get enough volume out of my Matamp 4x10 (8-ohm) playing medium sized pubs, to maybe 100 people. They're notoriously underpowered apparently. I figured a 6x10 will resolve most of my issues and I've always liked them in the past.
I always thought the SVT6 had monstrous power... Is it not 750 watts @ 8 ohms? Have a look at the Barefaced website and check the Super 12 page. There's some good info there. Or, even better. Just cut and paste your original topic and forward it to Alex at Barefaced. He'll be able to help you with what you're looking for. On the other hand, if you don't mind the weigh lifting and don't have to deal with staircases for loading in and out of venues, just get the Berg.
6. I believe the NV610 will be louder than a Super 12, but not a lot a louder. In terms of sound, I never used the Berg. The only 6x10 I ever used was an Ampeg and I thought it was great. By what I heard the Berg should be even better. No doubt it's an awesome cab. The question is... Do you really need a 6x10? What kind of stages are you playing? I've been playing a lot with my Super 12 since I got it in the beginning of March. Big pubs (300 people, more or less) marquees (where you always end up playing louder, 'cause there's normally no natural reverb) a big club (The Venue, in New Cross. Only time I ever used PA support, and to be honest, could have done without it). For all those gigs I've been using my Ashdown 550 Spyder and my Super 12 and it's more than enough for me in terms of volume and tone. The Ashdown it's not even the most powerful amp out there, but when paired to the Super 12 it's loud enough for anywhere but arenas and stadiums. I'm pretty sure the Super 12 it's going to be more than good enough for most bass players 99.9% of the time. And it's so easy to transport... I just can get over it. It puts a smile on my face every time I need to pick it up. I owned all sorts of cabinets since I began to play some 20 years ago. 1x15's, 2x10's, 4x10's, 8x10's, 2x12's and even a 2x15 + 2x10, which is a monster that's impossible to lift on your own. We're talking about Aguilar, Ashdown, Ampeg, Orange, Epifani and Marshall. All great cabs, but since I got the Super 12 I'm not looking back. I'm sure you're gonna love it. What amp are you planning to use with it, by the way?
7.
Great looking bass, bet it sounds rude too
It does sound great. I think the Wizards are amazing pickups which people sometimes tend to overlook because they're cheap in comparison to other more famous brands. They sound just as good as the original pickups on my '77 Precision. Turn the tone control all the way up and it will roar. Roll it off a little bit and it will purr. Come and try it! Hey! And welcome to Basschat too!
8.
It's like a Mark Hoppus bass only way better. Good luck with this one Eddie! I'd be sorely tempted but 3 basses would be over kill
Hey Gavin! Indeed, way better than a Mark Hoppus. At least the one I tried. Only quality components on this one. It's like a Fender Custom Shop for the price of MIM. I might keep it just to experiment with different pickups (evil laugh).
9.
EDDIE! That looks nice. My friend has one of those super 12s. They're supposed to be really good.
Yeah man. The Super 12 is out of this world. I used to have two Orange OBC115's with me onstage, which I loved, and the Super 12 manages to be even louder. And it's not only about how loud it is, it's the way it spreads the sound around the room. It happened a couple of times when I stepped out of the stage for a friend to play bass in some songs and I was sooooooo pleased with the way the bass was sounding. No PA support cutting through a loud rock band. It's like having your own little bass PA, hehe! I still rate the OBC115's among the best cabs out there, but you can't beat the fact that you can sound just as good (probably better) with something that weights almost half the weight of just one of them and has such a clever form factor. Alex, from Barefaced, told me that the more power you throw at it the better it sounds. I think they are rated at 1200 watts, right? I've been using mine with the Ashdown 550 Spyder and it sounds huge. I can't even imagine how bad ass it would be with a even more powerful amp. And you valve amp fans out there should give the 550 Spyder a try. In my experience with hybrid amps, which consists of Ampeg SVTIII, Ashdown ABM 500 and Orange TB500, this is the closest you can get in terms of sound and feel to an all valve head. I also used a VT Bass with a properly good power amp for a long time and I prefer the Spyder to it. Great piece of kit.
10. Hey man! I didn't sell mine. Mine is still going strong, hehe. I did sell my Orange TB, though. It's a great amp and louder than the 550, but I prefer the sound and feel of the Ashdown better. It responds better to the dynamics of your playing, in my opinion. I had the Orange SP410 for a while. Good cab, loud and punchy, but you can get similar, or better 2x10's (which is what PS410 is, in practical terms) for cheaper. If you want a real good Orange cabinet, try the OBC115. I think your price is good, the problem is nobody has any cash right now.
11. Here's my main rig at the moment. Loving it!
12. I heard they're being discontinued as well. Don't know why, though... Instead of discontinuing it, Ashdown should make a 900 version like the ABM's. I really liked my ABM, but the 550 is the closest I ever got to the sound and, specially, feel, of an all valve amp. And I owned the Orange Terror Bass and the Ampeg SVT-3. Good luck with the sale.
13.
Mate - absolutely beautiful bass - best of luck.
Thanks man. And it sounds even better than it looks!
14. You might wanna try two of the OBC 115's together. I used to have this rig and, for me, it's the best cab combination ever. These cabinets are awesome!
15. Great stuff so far, guys! I guess my favourite guitar solo ever is this one by Dean DeLeo. I love this band, love this album, love this song and this guitar solo gives me goose bumps every time. A tribute to Jimi Page, but better!
