1. Yes Anthony was a surprise to me too. In Bristol the doors opened at 7:30 They started at 8:15 and did two and a half hours .so I guess they'll do roughly the same,
2. I must have seen most of his videos on YouTube but I still underestimated just how good he is...I need to practice more. And seeing Anthony Wellington in the 'normal' bass role with his amazing Ying Yang Imperial was a nice bonus too... And wasn't expecting to hear a cover of LedZeps Kashmir either. .. And I got my YYS back I plate signed. A quadruple win!!!
3.
Would be criminal to pass that one up really.
+1
4. Please stop now !!!
5.
... if an amp could do every possible sound we'd all be using the same one...
Crumbs , all these years and I've never thought of that....still in my younger gigging days all you did was buy the loudest HH ,Peavey, Marshall or an Ampeg depending on what you could afford. I have been trying to avoid You Tube in case it gave me GAS for effects... I know if I get some , in a given hours practice I'll spend 50 mins knob twiddling(!) I'd never get my own sound as I'd be too busy trying to imitate everybody else's.
6.
I spent four hours odd in there about a year ago. Prepare to go down the rabbit hole!
That sounds familiar
7. Just curious, perhaps you guys (or anyone else who cares to post their signal chain) can elaborate... as to what each element of the chain bring to the party? I mean a compressor compresses Ok, but the Tech21 shapes the tone, but doesn't the amp do that as well? . Or again, the darkglass adds tube tone but the Mesa has those anyway?
8. I'd feel a t*t playing that !!!
9. Here's a really long thread with some links... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230948-ios-for-the-gigging-bassist After reading it (when it was a lot shorter !!) I plumped for, and can recommend JamUp + bass expansion pack for headphone practice
10.
Obviously we all know that in the real world, you need to build up strength and speed in your hands, and there's no way of doing this without physically playing.
that's what I said to the judge!!!
11. Thank you all very much for the really helpful replies. #1 Jazz Album now downloaded - but I am having trouble listening to it without thinking about John Thompson on the Fast Show. Thanks for introducing me to the world of 'Real' books I'd never heard of them before. That all looks too serious for me though, I just wanted to play a few 'essential' tunes. Anyway now I have a list and some on-line resources to get me started.
12. I didn't want to hi jack the recent cruise ship work thread, but one of the things that came up there for people looking at that sort of thing was the need to know the 'standards'. Now I don't want to work on a cruise ship, and I can't read music anyway,.but in the never ending quest to improve my playing, I am curious as to what exactly people regard as the Jazz Standards that it would be necessary know? What is a standard anyway - Glenn Miller, Sinatra or is that big band not Jazz I tried googling it and Wiki has a MASSIVE list of things I never heard of, What's a good starting point?
13. I am not quite sure of their concept of the word "best" though. oh, and their list of essential guitar accessories is pick, strap, amp, Tuner , capo and metronome ... no need for a lead then.
14. it's Earthsong by MJ but without the " Ahhh ahhh Ahhh!" crescendo. ...I'd take the credit for spotting that, but some of you may have heard Nick Grimshaw mix them this morning http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/james-bond-spectre/sam-smith-writings-on-the-wall-song-review/
15.
Is that part of your normal service or is it by special request?
Is it extra if the client wishes to choose more than 3 additional vegetables?
16.
Now that hits the spot.......Oh Baby
+1
17.
I use a roland microcube bass, something like 8 watts in 4 tiny speakers, but it's got reasonable sound shaping and amp modelling, rhythm patterns, and a good headphones out.
Great little practice amps these. That's what I used, until I read the IOS bassist thread on here , now I tend to use iRig+Ipad+JamUp+ my Turtle Beach gaming headphones.
18. When you are buying in the US make sure the Bass is one that CAN be shipped abroad, just in case US Customs get funny. I don't know if this is actually being enforced though...... http://americanorchestras.org/advocacy-government/travel-with-instruments/endangered-species-material/protected-species-travel-tips.html http://www.musiciansunion.org.uk/news/2014/10/04/for-musicians-travelling-overseas-with-their-instrument/
19.
.... wages went to "Fragile", and I was floored both by the music and by the bass parts and bass sound. "Close to the Edge" kinda repeated that feat, and especially the bass part of "Total Mass Retain" was a personal eyeopener to me as to what was possible in popular music. I see Chris Squire as a visionary bass player within rock music, and I understand he had a great influence on other bass players. Thanks, Chris! R.I.P.
This !
20. I used to find just a small group of musicians analysing, de-constructing, & potentially criticising what you are doing far more intimidating a than a large crowd getting p****d up and not really caring, as long they could nod their head to the tune.
