1. Totally agree with Johngh above. Whilst it can be a pain moving keys (and in some cases ruining songs!), surely the lead vocal is the most noticeable thing to your average punter if its not in tune? And if that means downtuning/getting the guitarist to use a capo etc then thats what it takes.
2. 35 years, playing (a conservative average of) 2 gigs a week equals 3500 Crikey..........
3. I use a foldable K&M stand, around £14. Folds up and weighs next to nowt. Very strong and surprisingly robust - had a rather erm..large lady fall on it onstage at a local pub gig and it survived that. Seen too many instruments damaged over the years by being left against an amp/chair/wall etc to not use a stand. Also don't like the bottom strap button being used to support the bass, going to lead to problems sooner or later.
4. Not sure which driver would be best for you. However, I believe the MAG series combos had 2 speaker outputs, so if you want to ever use an extension cab then replace the combo speaker with an 8 ohm one-that way you can add an extension cab (also 8 ohms) to get the full power from the amp (which will then be into 4 ohms total) If you'll never do the extension cab thing, then replace your blown speaker with a 4 ohm one - these are often a bit harder to find though, and the difference in output from your combo with a 4 ohm speaker against an 8 ohm one may not sound that much.
5. More love for the GK - got a couple of them. Had an Ampeg SVT3 and liked it, but always seemed to have to run it well up to get decent volume, whereas the GK just keeps on going. Both been very reliable so far, and not stupid heavy at around 19lbs.The boost control lets you dial in a bit of growl if that your thing too.
6. For anyone who missed it, this is being repeated on Thursday 26th July at 11.30 on BBC4.
7. +1 for Stevie Wonder's version of 'We can work it out'. Also love his version of 'Blowin in the wind'. There have been some great covers done by Motown acts, often (IMO) challenging the originals - 'I heard it through the grapevine' by Marvin Gaye (Gladys Knight) and 'Its all in the game' by the Four Tops (Tommy Edwards). Love 'em.
8. Strat for all round versatility for me - huge amount of sounds available, and great to look at & play. Give me a two tone late 50's one with a huge maple neck and I'm happy. A red 335 would be a close second though - Les Paul sounds and a whole lot more...............
9. Superb programme, sublime performances esp from Dale Davis. A very underated player IMO. Any idea what he's doing now?
10. GK 800RB head - say £400 2x15 EV cab - c. £200 Leads,mics etc - c. £150 So around £750, add my Dano Longhorn and takes it to around £950 at s/h prices. More than I thought actually.................
11. Stevie's 'Signed sealed delivered' is probably my all time favourite bassline. Truly one of the greats, RIP.
12. Cool - love it! Just a shame I'm not a left hander.....................
13. Recently sold Adam my Hohner B2A. Easy transaction, prompt payment and kept in touch all the way - great bloke, deal with confidence. Thanks Adam!
14. In the new (August 2012) edition of Guitar & Bass magazine, there is an interesting 5 page article on Dave Swift's vintage private collection. Lots of pics & info. Cheers.
15. Selling my Hohner B2A as it's just not getting used at the moment. Not sure how old it is, I've had it for a few years so am guessing it's a late 80's/early 90's one. Obviously it's the active model, which usefully has an active/passive switch should the battery go down (which has never happened to me but handy all the same). Spec is : Solid US maple body and neck Neck through body construction Rosewood fingerboard / 24 frets Steinberger licensed DB detunable bridge 2 EMG designed pickups, each with volume control Active bass&treble controls Active /passive switch with LED Fold out leg rest It is in excellent condition overall - few tiny marks but no big scratches/gouges etc! Sounds massive too - used it in an 8-piece band for a while and it was great. Comes complete with a Ritter gig bag (in exc con) and also a very sturdy aluminium flight case which I bought from a fellow basschat person IIRC. Will also throw in some spare strings if I can find them! Looking for £235, near offers considered. Now asking £220 ono. Bass is in East Yorkshire, just east of Hull. Would prefer cash on collection or possible (Northern?) meet up, as the flight case is quite heavy. I also get around a fair bit with my band, so may be able to work something out there - however, will post if needs be. More pics available - PM me your email and will send them. Cheers, Pete. PS - any marks on the front are my lousy photography/reflections. SOLD!
16. There is some great advice on here in the 'Amps and Cabinets' section - 'Impedance etc' - which should give you all you need to know.
