Anyone off to Haydock Racecourse tomorrow?
casapete replied to ChazzJEUK's topic in General Discussion
I go to quite a few of the northern shows, always an interesting few hours. Don't expect too much bass-wise, they tend to be mainly guitar orientated although this can vary. Some good deals to be had on accessories, especially strings. Often a few stalls with lots of spares which are hard to find elsewhere other than t'internet. Live music sessions are popular, and again vary a lot. When these are running it's the best time to look around the show as they draw a good crowd away from the stalls. Enjoy! -
I saw 10cc live a few years ago and they were musically great. My only compalint was that they were so good and tight that I felt I might as well have listened to a CD. Don't get me wrong, I like good and tight, but the great thing about live music is that it can come out slightly differently every time, different solo's repeated verses, different banter etc. and I didn't get any of that with 10cc.
Mmm, interesting lyrics though on the last verse of Rubber Bullets on the Tuesday edition.....
Seeing as were getting nostalgic and slushy..listen carefully to anything Bee Gees wise...monster studio playing on it all.
Apologies for this if you've never seen it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GhsUQJ8go8

I tune my bass 45 mins before we start playing, and then 2 or 3 times maybe each set when there is a gap / song that doesn't need me in from the start. May seem excessive, but the theatres I play in have a habit of being often very chilly before we start, and get a lot warmer as the set progresses (with the lights / audience etc!) My bass is never far out, but like to keep it spot on. Must say though that the accuracy of modern tuners make things look a lot worse than they sound, a few cents adrift appearing to show up as way off! My (apparently extremely uncool) Snark clip on tuner is great though, accurate but not ridiculously so.

Any famous guitarists good at playing bass?
casapete replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
Sheryl Crow -
Probably the king of the (mostly) forgotten art of rhythm guitar. Remember hearing 'Le Freak' on an imported 12" single for the first time in 1978 and being totally blown away by the whole thing, especially the guitar and bass. Was fortunate to see Nile and his band a couple of years ago in Leeds, amazing gig. Another 70's tune with great guitar was George McRae's 'Rock your baby'. Sounds deceptively simple but powers the song right through.

Agree that the Peavey TVX410 is a very underrated cab, mainly by label / brand snobs. Just weigh a ton though.

She's on The Graham Norton show, Friday 12th May.

Think the Fender Bassman cabs with the 'pyramid' design were from the very late 60's/ early 70's? 4x12 designed to go with the Bassman 100 heads.

Gauging string gauges and other acoustic bass problems...
casapete replied to Powertripper's topic in Bass Guitars
Regarding strings, I've found the best ones for my Washburn AB20 are Elites bronze, which I think are 40-60-80-100 gauges. Seem to last a good while, and stay a bit zingy too if that's what you want. Fender bronzewounds are okay too, similar gauges I think but for me go off a bit sooner. Cheaper than the Elites though, so you pays yer money etc. -
Anyone come across these oil can basses before?
casapete replied to stephaniet17's topic in Bass Guitars
Saw these at a guitar show recently. Had a quick go on one and they were actually okay, although rather strange to hold. ( Maybe I'm not the best judge though as I do like Danelectros and other oddball stuff!) -
Nobody mentioned Fender Precision Lyte yet. I've got 3, and had a fair few more over the years, and they've all been around the 7lb mark. Great basses for long gigs, solid Japanese build and still quite cheap on the s/h market. Full 34" scale, active with PJ pickup configuration and slim jazz style neck. What's not to like? I had to stop playing Stingrays due to a shoulder accident, but if anyone has a sub 8lb Ray they are looking to sell then please get in touch :-)

As above, another GK 210 would seem the obvious route to follow. However, I'm a bit surprised that you run your Stingray with all the bass up and the treble down. This will inevitably put more strain on any rig, especially the cabs. On that basis I'd go for something which will cope with all that low end, bearing in mind that the 1001 are loud amps....... I run my 1001 into a GKNeo 410 and it matches the amp brilliantly. Although not using such extreme settings on my bass as yourself, I've never found it lacking in tone or handling capacity. I also use a Barefaced Compact cab, which handles the amp surprisingly well, and would recommend you check out their range if you're looking for light / high power cabs that are portable too.

Only heard the new single, and the last one with Jeff Beck guesting - loved them both though. Bit of a review here. http://www.rollingstone.com/country/premieres/see-imelda-mays-shouldve-been-you-video-w474914

Selling my case. Originally for my Freshman FA1BN bass but the buyer didn't need the case, so here it is. It's one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stagg-ABS-AB2-Guitar-Case/dp/B000NZMJ10 It's in excellent condition, rarely left the house. Fits most popular electro/acoustic basses. Cost around £80, so a great deal at £40. It's in East Yorkshire, west of Hull. Collection / meet up preferred. No trades thanks. Cheers, Pete.
Nice to see Robert Cray's bass player using a Squier VM Jazz.
Agreed. Enjoyed the stuff the band did, and Steve Jordan on drums too :-)

I use my rig to get the sound I want onstage, that's how I roll. By compromising too much on reducing bottom end or not having enough clean headroom then I may as well go down the IEM route really. I honestly don't believe one 4x10 to be excessive. I rarely have the PA engineer tell me to turn down / reduce the bottom end etc - if he does then I'll work with him to find a compromise, but usually he has enough leeway to balance the FOH sound.

Maybe this Peavey EDI would do the job? £48 so within your budget too. http://www.ccmusicshop.co.uk/product/peavey-edi-direct-box/

I did agree with the OP about smaller / one speaker cabs UNTIL I got my Barefaced Compact, which completely changed my ideas. I've gigged with it in fairly loud situations with no PA support and it's never really struggled, powered by my GK1001RB. However, I still prefer to use a GK 4x10 for my main gigs. My band doesn't play really loud, but there's just something about the sound / dispersion I like (maybe just what I'm used to?) I've never used single speaker cabs before this, having had the usual 2x15 / 8x10 / 4x10 stuff. Did a gig depping a while back with a function band where I used the bassist's Mark Bass LM amp into a small MK cab (1x12 I think) and honestly wondered how he coped. It sounded on the edge of breaking up at fairly moderate levels. Even with PA support, you are often relying on the monitors being good enough to cope / sound ok etc., so I prefer to have my sound behind me and go from there. Outdated ideas maybe, but works for me.

Any suggestions for a cheap, small, stupidly heavy cab
casapete replied to tonewheels's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had a Peavey 2x10TX cab a few years ago, and seem to remember it not being that bad weight wise. ( Or am I just remembering it in pre Barefaced terms? ) There's an Ashdown 2x10 kicking around on Gumtree ( I think) for £50. They're quite heavy little b*ggers. Will keep my eyes open for the 4x8 too. Am loving the bolted to the floor idea as well, am sure we've all had cabs that felt like that. -
I changed my playing style a few years ago to a low action and light touch. I completely overhauled my playing style & technique. I also learned how to set up my basses properly and I ditched my compressor. It was a six month journey to get my playing feeling natural & normal again but I haven't looked back. Like you, gig and rehearsal fatigue just isn't an issue any more. You will get your dynamics working again, it may take a little time to find the subtle touches, but it's all there waiting for you. Be patient and keep at it.
Me too. Always have set my basses with a medium action and dug in a bit. Always hated basses that buzz and rattle even if it doesn't come through the amp. However, since having some hand problems I have set my regular Precision Lyte a bit lower, and subsequently use a lighter technique. Seems to have helped as my hand hasn't got any worse, if anything it has improved a little. Takes a while to get used to, but for me has been a revelation. I now do a two hour show with ease, something I thought would not be possible before. Would recommend trying it - easy mod that can be put back if it's not for you :-)
