Hold your bass up and look beneath the strings. If any of them are touching the frets, raise the strings that touch the frets. Adjust string height by raising the height at the bridge with a hex wrench or standard screwdrivers.
For general shitholes, I use a Warwick Sweet 150w combo that I got off of ebay for £150. Its plenty loud enough.
So we now have two votes in the under £250 option.
I have an old korean Squier P bass with a really nice neck that I picked up for £150. I fitted some Seymour Duncan SPB1,s to beef up the sound, but its still only worth about £200. Sounds the dogs nazz though!

and, though I can't think of his name, the bass player in Bob Marley's Wailers.

Aston Family Man Barrett
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Paul Mc Cartneys bass work on 'A day in the life' is outstanding.
The Jam - Sound Affects, Bruce Foxton really shines on this album, take a listen to 'But I,m different now, for bass class.

A featherlite touch will hopefully ensue.
I sing lead on half a dozen numbers and backing on the rest, so looking down at my fingers while singing into the mike is impossible.
When I go to see a band live, I hate to see bassists staring at the fretboard. Its a pet hate of mine.
I hit the strings hard, although I only use Ernie Ball Super Slinkies 45 65 80 100, I cant get any volume from low action. The higher action, higher output.
I was in the fortunate position to be offered a set of 4 string coated strings for nowt. I know that Elixer coated strings are well respected on here, but anyone tried the Ernie Balls?
Lord Macca of Scouse, plays some root octaves during the verses on this under rated Bee Attles song, its just a pity his bass is out of tune
Great tune though!

Boz Burrell never liked this bassline. He played it on his fretless and not very well. He said it was out of tune and it pi**ed him off every time he heard it.

Strange that! Wonder why he didnt re record it? I dont think its out of tune at all!!

Is that the film where the dyson runs amok?
Having a debate between some muso friends, about the pros and cons of upgrading the stock Pups on cheaper Squiers and MIM Fenders.
Non bass players cant seem to hear the difference betweem my SPB1s, and the stock Mexicans on my P Bass. Im getting paranoid now that I wasted my money. But at least I can tell the difference!!
My first trip to Woolies as a kid in the late 70,s included this classic

Just a thought, are we measuring from the finger board or the frets?
[/quote]
Hmm! I measured from the finger board in my OP, maybe my action is not that high after all? Just goes to show what a wimp my mate is!

I saw that just after I posted, thanks Pete!
Aye. When I got it the action was 2mm which isn't quite low enough for me and there was no room left in the saddle on the E. So I shimmed it. Sounds just as good now as it did before.

Blimey! There must be more rattles than a skeletons disco!
