    Having just tried it out, I put my thumb over he top of the neck when I'm playing the thin strings down near the nut, the rest of the time it's behind. But then I'm not an actually really good bass player, I'm like Geddy Lee

    Could you record the bass direct and then re-amp it ? You'd only need to have the bass loud once (theoretically) as you'd have the take the way you wanted it before you used the amp, rather than having to have the amp loud every time you did a take. Might be a problem if you're recording a 25 minute opus, but for a short song you might be able to get away with rattling the furniture for just a short while !

    This was what crossed my mind. If I have ideas I only really send out a basic drum pattern, bass and just enough guitar to give an idea of what the chords are. Everything else I leave to the band or people I'm working with. Also, I'd feel a bit deluged by 24 ideas. If I'd come up with that many ideas (if only !), I'd be inclined to send them out in groups of 3 or 4 - much less daunting for the recipients. Not everyone can come up with parts they're happy with quickly. It can take some time to mull ideas over.

    I've been using this one (well, a different brand name, but still the same model) for quite a while. I don't if it counts as 'mid-level' but it does me fine. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0719H8T8Q I bought it to handle the SMT components in a pedal kit and it worked a treat for that and also for larger jobs like wiring pots. I bought a selection of (cheapish) tips as well.

    I think they do more than one show at the same time, so whilst you're listening to 'Smoke on the Water' on Planet Rock, they put their posh voice on and introduce some Mozart on Classic FM.

    Here's something from my youth. Great song, but what's going on here ? Have they all got stiff necks ? Maybe they were painting the guitarist's living room ceiling the day before and have got sore necks from all that overhead work. Lens seems a bit grimy too. Producer got bored and went off for a snog halfway through. Hell, it was the 80s. It was indie.

    Total silence no, I've only experienced that a couple of times - fair point that it's hard to come by. The gaps then, then things that make sounds end and begin.
