  1. Just to be clear, it's 25.
  2. Sounds less like musical appreciation and more like Pokemon to me.
  3. Not to my tastes, I prefer the biscuits to be honest.
  4. Hi Franchment Ok, so it sounds like you're after a P-bass but with that bit of extra definition that a P-J combination gives you. My first thought would be to try something along the lines of a Musicman-style pickup, but perhaps not in the traditional bridge position. I don't have much experience of the P-J setup, so perhaps see what other suggestions pop up - you've certainly narrowed the choice down a bit. Has your luthier got any suggestions ?
  5. Yes, me too.
  6. A good starting point would be to think of the types of pickup that you know get near the sound you like. What kind of basses and pickups do the bassists in the bands you like use - you mentioned Sublime and Cake...what do their bassists use ? There's so many styles and makes of pickups available, it would help to narrow things down a bit ! After that I'd be thinking about choosing single-coil or humbucker in terms of picking up background noise.
  7. When I do jam with people it's largely familiarity with what 'goes' with certain chords and progressions that helps me. I don't think I can recognise intervals and chords that easily, but as has been mentioned above, I watch what the other folks are doing and try to remember that a jam isn't about showing off how good you are, it's about playing together, so if you're keeping it simple but still taking part you're still jamming. Nowt wrong with roots and simple stuff whist you get into what's going on. Also I'm never afraid to ask what people are playing either. It's not a competition, it's collaboration.
  8. The guitarist I play with did exactly this. He's got sick and tired of PCs and uses an Zoom digital multitrack. Still makes great music. I used Ableton for quite a while and I know how you feel. It's very powerful but not in any direction I ever felt I needed. Now I use Reaper basically as a PC-based multi-track. I think you'll find it an awful lot easier to use than that Ableton malarkey !
  9. Couldn't agree more. Fascination Street is a monstrous bassline. I pretty much taught myself to play bass by learning Cure stuff. Thanks for the vid - crackng playing there.
  10. Sorry to hear that Stew, hope things are looking a bit more rosy soon.
  11. IIRC you need to be in working in Arrangement View, not Session View for Ableton to act like a 4-track....I think. It's been a while !
  12. Great stuff. Thanks again for putting this quiz together @toneknob, proper headscratcher. (And props for getting Ms. Goodge in there !)
  13. Very much so.
  14. Robust exchanges ? Here ? Well I never
  15. And Darkglass asking £300 for distortions !
  16. Here's an idea for a fret leveling beam, not tried it myself (no space for saw tables in my shed !), but might be worth a try.
  17. I'm with @NicoMcJ That's pretty darn impressive, given the circumstances.
  18. I'm scared to ask how he plays the keys
  19. Nowhere near as straightforward as the Reverb one, nice work ! Can't name them all, but here's what I can do. #4 is Deb Goodge with a First Act Delgada Bass (think that's what it's called) #5 is Geddy Lee with some flavour of Fender Jazz #7 is Pino Palladino with his hat-laying fretless Stingray #10 is Billy Sheehan with a two Yamaga Attutude basses that had an accident with some Araldite #13 is Stu Hamm, most likely a Fender Urge #14 is Jack Casady with one of his Epiohone signature basses. #15 is Chrus Wolstenholm with a Status that suffered a similar fate as Mr. Sheehan's basses, but someone dropped a Gameboy on it when the glue was wet.
  20. Very nice indeed, but the fan frets are making my eyes wonky....a bit of false perspective going on. But it's a cool wonky !
  21. Got all the guitarist ones too.
  22. Mrs. Pook showed me this. It's brilliant.
  23. Had this on my mental list but forgot 🤦‍♂️ Any good ?
  24. No, I knew too. 15/15. No guesses (EDIT: Mrs. Pook, who doesn't play bass got 12 !)
