1. Oh my, Bilbo, I can see I'll be very busy for the next few months. Thanks SOOOOOO much for this.
2. seconded - my GFS stuff arrived within the week.
3.
Well,it is pretty much the same spec as his other bass, just with wood pickup covers and an extra XLR output. Besides,he sounds pretty much the same whatever gear he's using.
yeah, I thought he already had one of these. It's the same spec as mine...and then I woke up!
4. I've tried a few in my time, Boss CE3B, CE2B, Digitech bass chorus, EHX small clone and an EBS unichorus. The Boss CE2 and the EBS were my favourite two, the winner (for me) is the EBS - it's just lovely (and has a small footprint, too) and choc-full of analogue goodness.
5. Hi TNIT, loads of guitarist that I know swear by GFS stuff. You can get some pretty good deals depending on the exchange rate (not sure if they have UK distribution yet), but they're knocking out all 3 pickups for $90 US. Their website is HERE. I put some of their overwound AlNiCo P pups on my fretless and they're insanely clear and rich for the money (about $40 at the time). Edit: they're even cheaper on the bay: GFS ON EBAY.
6. I've nothing against Reason as a piece of software, just the way people scratch the surface with it and assume that they are now a 'producer' because they've 'written' a 4 bar loop.
7.
Also greatest moment; literally the moment he hands me his bass, I plant the headstock straight into the wall. Great start...
Doing the relic'ing yourself then?
8. Spot on. We have a saying at work "Reason doth not a producer make". It takes more than phat beats innit? Shizzle (etc...).
9. Hve you thought about coated strings? Elixirs tend to last a while (unless you play with a pick, which just shreds them) though they're not quite as zingy as new uncoated roundwounds.

Fuller sound

yay for bass chords. Tenths are even better, as they're often easier to play.
11. Basschat has a lot to answer for here. My GAS list for this year was to possibly defret my 5 string. I haven't done that, but so far this year I've traded amp heads and sold and replaced half of my pedalboard.... Curse you BC, you're so tempting and convenient and I'm weak, so weak...
12. No. I teach on music production courses at degree level, and the students are taught to eliminate any noise of this kind, which is fine as that's what the University stipulates. On a personal level I think that 'modern' music is overproduced, and the finished product should be faithful to the performance captured during track-laying - if that includes fret buzz then so be it. [/rant]
13. cheers for the advice. I thought it was a ground loop and tried all posts of gadgets to get rid of it. Isolating transformer, di boxes to lift the ground, resoldering leads etc... The valve in question is an old one that i was using to attenuate the output (12au7 instead of 12ax7) to eliminate a tiny bit of noise that i had in protools. At the moment it's redundant, as that valve just controls the 'drive' circuit, so as long as i don't use it it's clean as a whistle. Oddly enough the svp doesn't have a ground lift option anywhere. Oops
14. Jeez, how tall is your drummer? Looks like a series 5 4x10 combo, not sure about the 1x18. For a lot of people this is the time that Trace really hit their stride as far as making great amps goes, so somebody should want it. Your quote might not be too far off the mark.
15. Sorted, swapped V4 and V5 over and voila, no noise. Whodathunkit?
16. i've only ever bought one bass brand new (straight from the distributer and not hanging up in the shop for 6months). The distinct advantage of this is that i get to relic it myself!
17. hi all, i'll have to withdraw these for the moment. Sorry 'bout dat.
18. Have you tried boosting the mids and maybe rolling off a little bass? Sorry if that sounds condescending, but it's easy (and free) to try.
19. welcome to the forum, nice to have you on board.
20. I've recently bought both of these (not the SAME ones, obviously), and they are great pedals, particularly the M80. The BMS is a steal. Bump for FX love.
21. IT's quite interesting really, you don't get many basses with green frets. Looks like it's been screwed to the outside wall of a music shop in lieu of a proper sign. Not so much 'relic'ed' as simply 'liced' "three strings, that's one more'n y'all need for country music bowah!"
22. Hi All, I've got two Ampegs - A B2RE solid state and an old SVP PRO preamp. I'd like to use the SVP as my main pre (for obvious reasons) and use the B2RE as a slave amp. I'm currently going from a preamp OUT (1/4" socket) on the SVP to the poweramp IN (1/4") on the back of the B2RE, I know this shouldn't be rocket science, but the pre is really noisy when connected like this. When I use it at home or studios (it's my main recording kit) it's practically noiseless. I'd like it to be noiseless live too, but so far that luxury has escaped me. It's been retubed with quality tubes, and had new power supply caps and a new mains transformer fitted (both from authorised Ampeg suppliers), and the fact that it's quiet when it's just being used as a pre leads me to believe that the problem isn't wit the SVP. Any thoughts? Does it make a difference twisting the two wires that go from the AC inlet socket to the On/Off switch together to act as a 'choke' (of sorts)? is this even safe? edit: I should add that everything is coming from the same 13A ring - heads, pedalboard supplies etc..
23.
Thanks Paul. So would I use that program on a laptop, either in logic/cubase or on it's own, and then use a midi keyboard like the edirol here through the laptop, to get the sound I want?
Precisely. The computer then becomes a 'box of sounds' that the MIDI controller triggers. All this USB and plugin gubbins! I remember having to sample sounds on outboard gear, then set loop points on a tiny numerical display. You kids don't know you're born... and I'm only 35!
24.
we have a keyboard line that was done on a superexpensive korg that happened to be in the studio on the day. What do you reckon the feasibility is of us getting a patch from somewhere that sounds like it (I have a friend who owns a studio so perhaps not impossible) and using this to play it?
Hi Dan, Korg do their own plugins (which can be used as an instrument inside Cubase / Logic / ProTools / Reaper etc...) or as a standalone application (no need for any other software), and both work really well. The link to their website is HERE. think they're about £40 a pop, which is considerably cheaper and lighter than lugging an old Wavestation (or similar) around. I can heartily recommend the MS20. It's not easy to program, but there are loads of presets that are free to download from their site too. Cheers, Paul

decent DI box?

I absolutely love my MXR, it's got a switchable distortion circuit, so for me it scores over the Tech 21.
