1.
I was pondering the popularity of Shuker basses over my coffee this morning. I think some of it can be put down to his excellent website, which IMO is much clearer and informarive than a lot of other luthiers' sites.
Well Ok .. but his fine website would be worth bu66er all if his basses were not superb. You don't get the kind of word of mouth personal recommendations Jon gets just with good marketing. Other builders are available (always have to say that or people moan) 1 he builds fabulous basses 2 he knows exactly what to do to make a bass do what you ask for in the design spec 3 he knows what is possible and also what is advisable 4 he's not afraid to try something a bit different if that's what you want (see the Doodle - 7 string, SC and purple flip paint) 5 he'll build a traditional bass if that's what you want 6 he takes a long time - longer than his estimates 7 he's cheaper than he should be (as someone said, a hand made custom for less than an off the shelf machine and factory built bass) 8 above all he's a mighty nice bloke and always nice to deal with, or just to chat with. However, at least in the old workshop, his coffee leaves a bit to be desired .
 2.
i have a feeling its non-export, do they export their reissue basses at all?
This was brought in by Malcolm of Guitar Emporium so it could be either.
 3.
Jazz? World? Roots?
All of the above, and more

 5. I'd like to personally thank the OP for making this slight error and causing the funniest thread I've read for weeks
 6.
I've sorted it.
Thanks Steve ... Sorry it should have linked to this for sale thread CIJ P bass
 7. Posted on the "So long and thanks" thread as well but just in case .. Glad you have not gone totally... If you are still reading this can you help identify this one as the seller doesn't know what model it is. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...20&start=20 Would you care to tell us where the others went? (basses) Thanks OG
 8.
I've looked at it a couple of times. Would match my Stingray. Never had a P before though and not sure if I want one. Someone will have it at that price I'm sure.
Is it an export or non-export ? and what year is it? And where are you located? Ta
 9. Did you see the wiki on this? http://wiki.basschat.co.uk/info:industry:stage_lighting
 10. That will be people seeing if there are others who may be interested but patient and possibly in a position to buy the bass at a later date, etc. It's a community so there are more subtle things going on than a straightforward sale and purchase.
 11. Last night, depping for my friends' acoustic Twmpath band (that's Welsh for "barn dance") Conference after dinner dance for careers advisers .. "In Cardiff so let's have Welsh flavour" So far so good. 150 people in a hotel conference ball room thing. We started at 10 as they had coffee and managed three quick dances before the organiser said "some people have asked if we can play some disco music so can you take a break" yeah, fine. Sat down but no music 'cos they hadn't anticipated this and there's no CD player (this band records it's gigs on mini-disc and so plays the betweens stuff from mini-disc too). Oh dear .. meventually they find bloke with an iPod, plug it into the conference event PA and whammo, Spice Grrrrrls at full bass and full volume. A random selection of poptunes the majority of teh 40+ audience had never heard before follows (but not Dancing Queen - derrrr) and no one dances .. chorus of "please turn that down" from all in the gaps between songs. So the older people can't stand it and leave, followed by the idiots who'd demanded the disco music, leaving us and 50 diehards up for a twmpath. So after 30 minutes of this we're back on stage with the remaining 50 people keenly dancing their socks off to trad Welsh diddly tunes .. I played my Shuker modern bolt on 5 string which is strung E-C. not a lot of use for the C string in this band but I did venture up there a bit.. Tend to crash into the melody instruments if I do too much of that though. Root-5th is really what's required most of the time I also bought a pair of speaker stands from Maplins (in the sale at £20 each rather than £30) and stuck my powered monitor on top of one just for the bass as a side fill about 6 inches from my ear. This was to enable me to hear myself but so I didn't have to have the amp up too loud. Everything goes through the PA foh only in this band, no backline and they are all playing acoustic instruments they can hear acoustically, so it's been a problem hearing myself before and I've tended to be too loud in the FoH and recordings they make. This worked a treat though and should enable me to play the Stagg stick accurately next time.. The vemue was about 500 yards from my front door so a total time out of the house of just 2.5 hours I liked that.
 12.
Hey all. Someone was asking the other day for software that allows you to slow a piece of music without altering the pitch etc to help learning songs etc,Ive looked for the OP,s thread but cant find it. Anyways if you lot are'nt familiar with this one its Digital Music Mentor http://www.sienzo.com/ Its similar to the tascam bass trainer in that you can loop/slow sections but it tabs out the bass for you and gives you the g**t*r chords as well. It's $50 ish to buy but well worth it IMO. Hopefully there'll be someone out there that doesnt know about it and will find it usefull.Ive had it for a year or so now and hav'nt had any problems (touch wood) with it so far.It sometimes struggles with faster sections but it gives you enough to work out the gaps. worth i post i reckon.
Windows Media Player lets you slow music down without changing the pitch too There used to be a "variable speed" menu but I can't find that now. The easiest way is to start the track and then press Ctrl + shift + S for slow, N for normal and F for fast
 13.
Careful with the case! Coming back from a rehearsal on Sunday evening, the shoulder strap broke. I thought I had caught the bass in time but obviously not as, when I opened it up on Monday, I discovered I had split the headstock! Glued, set, clamped and reinforced with a couple of wooden dowels, it seems to be holding up and I will be using it at a gig tonight. However, I would rather not have had the opportunity to practise my luthiery skills! Wulf
Hummm Cheers Wulf. I'll check mine .. What actually broke?
 14. We had a very nice time watching him in Bristol on Wednesday too .. Very entertaining.
 15.
I just played my first gig with my stagg EUB. I'll have to say that I'm very impressed. There are still some nut slot issues to be taken care of once I get the correct files but all in all I'm very happy with my purchase. The recordings from the concert proved to me that it really does emulate a the sound real upright fairly well. Once again, I'd suggest anyone that is looking into one to take the plunge. You won't be disappointed.
Excellent news .. the recording of my first go out proved that I needed to hear myself better on stage and also work on my intonation I've sorted the former by using a bass monitor on a stick all to myself about 6 inches from my ear. I fact I'm just back from a gig with that band with teh amping set up like that as a trial (on bass guitar) I'll take the Stagg next time.
 16.
they used to cost £25 from Woolworths in the seventies
Yeah but a house in Knightsbridge was only £37.50 Tell that to kids these days and they won't believe you.
 17.
I thought I would tighten the Criteria a tad, only last time I advertised, I got a half deaf, one-eyed chain-smoking alcoholic just out of Rehab, who was on the dole with no gear, asking for a sub, and said he was only available weekdays for Wembly type gigs, and could he let me know later, as he had been inundated with offers............... still can't win 'em all, Cheers, Pete Mitchell. PS. Maybe I was lucky??
Ha ha well it's good to say what you want, saves a lot of messing about later I'd certainly suggest you edit the title a bit though as "bassist required" is a tad general "Pro, together bassist wanted, Blues band, London" might get a few more looks Cheers,
 18.
can you get em in 6er sets??
Elixirs? Yeah you buy the 4 string set you like then add two singles for the B and C
 19.
I just found his cd in my box of CDs and was making fun of his name to JoeGarcia only last night. Will probably catch that. Oldgit, if you are coming, I could jug my Wishbass along if you want a go with it.
Sorry I didn't give you a shout beforehand but it looked like I wasn't going to make it and then Mrs Old Git came home too knackered to go out again and kicked me out to go, Bless her
 20.
Well...I really enjoyed it. Don't get out much (except when "working") so it was a real treat. I'm sure that was Rich in the SWR Tshirt....
I was there in the end.. what an entertainer! What great stuff. So good to see such a great player not up his own ar53 with how well he can play. I have a feeling being an attractive and "under 40" woman down the front might have been fun Boner by name ..... and the bit where he picked up on people's noises and that kid's shouting and incorperated them into his solo was really great. Looked like he'd been using Monster cables though as one of his leads had to be taped into his Fodera .. Yes that was Rich advertising SWR ... I was the guy with the brown pork pie hat
 21.
I knew that, I just meant it sort of looks like him on their website, silly!! haha! PS. Hammond, best stick to the day job!!
Ha ha yeah I know So Stratmaster .. Any luck?
 22.
Cheers Oldgit, I've changed my title calling for some USA intervention (few sounds political almost!). To answer your Q no i haven't got a Synapse....although i'd certainly like to try one. I've just bought a Spirit (budget Steinberger) of another B/Cer. I used to have a Hohner headless and didn't like how it sat when playing so i purchased a synapse hook from a USA shop but alas that shop has ceased trading. I've tried looking around the net with no luck other than online shops that will not trade steinberger parts with the UK (Why?).....so calling all American BCers...can you help????
Yeah I've been annoyed by the US shops refusing to sell stuff to the UK before - like when Line 6 dumped all their basses on the US at £250 a pop .. so annoying reading all these talkbass people going nuts abut it and not being able to get one ... I had a spirit and made a pivoting wing strap thing like the L2 had.. Wish I'd just thought of the hook Let me know if you are stuck and I'll see if my mate in Canada can help ...
 23. It may not answer your specific question but there is a WIKI entry about strings here http://wiki.basschat.co.uk/info:buying:strings Cheers PS save up and try Elixirs ..
 24.
Hi, i am after something like this : http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/pro...rews?sku=369900 However they won't ship this from the American site (w@$%erz) and am struggling to find anywhere else to get one. Unfortunately i am not very practical and lack the means to make anything like this but if any one want to make one i'd be happy to pay! Cheers, Lee
Got a friend in America? Put out a yell for one of the US based people on the board - there's a few - I'm sure they'd sort that out for you .. Do you have a synapse? Any good? there's an L2 on ebay at the mo but it has a 1500 reserve on it
 25. + on the song first. Easy Gutar? Hummmm how about "well chosen" guitar parts. Rhythm Stick (or is that too commonly done?) You don't always need all the stuff that was on the record, Bowie did a version of Space Oddity with just a 12 string guitar, and a bunch of "unplugged" version of things .. Lets Dance, anyone? Bass and drums and a bit of good funk chording during the singing would easily carry that one. Sound and Vision works well too. Used to be a three-piece in Bristol many years ago called The Fred Quimby Big Band, (cartoon fans) who did Louis Jordan's Reet Petite and Caledonia in a loud raucous rock stlyeee. I've played River Deep, Mountain High in bands of many sizes including duo plus drummer in a box. That works.
