The most interesting interview with a bassist ..
OldGit replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I'll forgive him all the dissing of the bass player for the bass on Valley Girl. -
The technical blurb says it can switch 10 amps maximum - that would be 8 x 300 Watt PAR cans, for example. Although I'm not sure I'd take it to the limit like that.
hey great
We use the single ones on some of our lights. We keep loosing the remote though :-(
You need a stage sofa.. It will be down the side of the seat ...

Gigged the Stagg again last Saturday. Another dep for the acoustic band. I just took the Stagg so I had to play it all night and just about managed it. My arm's aching a bit today and my plucking fingers are sufferring a bit. I had a problem with the side markers as they dissapeared under stage lights .. luckily I had some florescent green stickers marking the 9th an 12th er "fret" position on the treble side so I just snipped off little bits of those and stuck them over the white side markers on the bass side between the first and second dances.. That sorted it. Phew! Another gig for them on Saturday so hopefully the muscles will be better by then

Saurday I played a Twmpath barn dance dep on the Stagg upright deep up a Welsh Valley, on the day before St Davids' day and during the 6 nations rugby competition. .. The entire room was in Welsh rugby shirts or national dress (the under 6's). Actually most of the audience was at home watching the rugby or rednose come dancing .. Still, the kids tehre had a good dance and no one had a go at me for being English... My upright playing is coming on but I'm still struggling with the change of style needed, playing a lot less and using open strings (they are in tune!) and intonation. I've swapped my wedge monitor for a Vox Venue 30 practice amp for this gig and it gets plugged into the little PA so I just need to hear myself enough to play in tune. The Vox struggles with the open E played enthusiastically but that's asking a bit much for any practice amp, I think. I'd liek o try it througha Roland Cube 30 sometime though. The overall sound is Ok and the band loves the look of the upright and keeps telling me .. That's nice for such a cheap instrument . Got another one with them next week ..
Absolutely awful. Played to an empty room at the Hertford Marquee. Had our old drummer back depping, so he had to learn our set in 3 days, which he did, amazingly well, but not a single person turned up. it was so bad, te headliners refused to play and left at the same time as us. The band just doesnt seem to attract a crowd, and whilst i love the music, i hatespending a shed load of dosh on rehearsals, take a half day at work, travelling an hour to a gig, only for no one to come along. Methinks i need another band
or some marketing ...

Sounds like option A would certainly be "I've always thought that tune is just perfect without any bass"

Not sure the domesic ones will handle many lights at once as our house one can't have an iron going through it, for example. We use these round the house and they are great for avoiding the withering stare from our kid when I leave the telly on standby overnight accidentally .. On stage we have a big foot switch that does the same thing . Clunk out go the lights ..
I sent him a message and asked if he meant to start it at £100
+1 I suggested he'd maybe meant £20 or maybe the stickers are worth £100?

That's as optomistic as this guy Jim Deacon P bass, new £120, starting bid £200

Yeah stacks went up to 62... and a pre-62 would normally have the "earth strap" but it may have been messed with. The parts look right but the body looks like smeones taken paint stripper and a blow torch to it. The back of the neck is certainly not worn in the way that every old Fender I've seen has- ie the signs of the gradual erosion of the surface by the players' hands...

Last one we fell foul of (about 4 years ago) was a bass activated one so they have been around for while, Jake. I tripped it 4 time in the evening and I was being really careful. I'd say your key problem will be yoru drummer, assuming he or she is playing an acoustic kit. If they have an electric one you may have more of a chance. Anyway as has been said minimum sound on stage, let the FoH handle the problem. Those UPS's are for computer servers to enable them to be shut down gently in the case of a powercut, not to run bands through multiple powercuts cause by a tripswitch Singers eh? the whole world really does revolve around them The groom should have been on the case if he's in a band .... oh, sorry he's a singer too ....

Walk on the wild side - how to play with only one bass?
OldGit replied to jmstone's topic in General Discussion
However when I play it in our band I do it the [s]lazy[/s] minimalistic but effective way ... G on the D string, B on the G string and slide up and down with a popped 12fret harmonic G on the 4th beat of the second bar whilst I get back down to the low end. Seems to work and TBH the punters don't mind I'm not playing the low G+10th or the "two basses at once" thing ... -
This is a no name 62 Burst Pbass copy i bought off Bassbunny a few months back. here's some blurb which i have pinched off Bassbunny selling ad. too lazy to do my own. The cavity has been lined with Copper. The scratchplate has been foil backed. A Wizard Thumper has been installed along with CTS Pots, Switchcraft Jack and Sprague capacitor. All wiring is in Vintage cloth covered wire and the pot/capacitor values were decided upon after a chat with Andy at Wizard pickups. The bridge has been replaced with a Wilkinson Vintage bridge with Brass Saddles. New string tree and Fecker transfer, (laquered over) it has a really nice neck plays and sounds just great. can be supplied with an old battered case. may swap for a jazz bass, £150. put some pics up later if anyone's interested.
You have mail ...
I thank you. Its Fiesta Red using nitro-cellulose so it should wear like a vintage bass if only I played it enough
Offer to cycle it round teh forum for a few months ... I'm sure it would get some "road worn" milage Me first
This is how I do it. Yes it does take some practice, but it must be reasonably easy if I can do it It's worth working at, as it is so much more effective than just doing one of the lines and more impressive than getting a (spit) guitarist to do it.
I can confirm that Rich's double handed technique suonds great and looks very impressive. Even his singer noticed and makes a feature of it... -
Not surprised they are still trying to sell that f'ugly thing ..
SX why because I have never owned any other P bass
+1 The Rondo Music SX P bass I had was really good (as were the jazzes from the same source), especially with a Gotoh 203 bridge added. A bargain at $99 plus postage duty etc from the US - About £150 all in. http://www.rondomusic.com/bassguitars4.html I like the Jim Deacon 62 P bass. http://jimdeacon.co.uk/Products/Basses/FPB62.html Usually around £120 from high street music shops. It has a "nicer" headstock shape than the SX's ... The Squier's are worth trying too. What's your budget?
