Do you own the most expensive bass on Basschat
If you don't mind me pulling the classic Ebay £65 postage stunt, we might have a deal!
No need. I can get to "behind my sofa" easily to pick it up ... Are my wife's house keys and the cable remote there with you?
Soloing isn't really my style . Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm going to have a good look at all this tonight.
I'm looking at this one too .. For getting solo ideas if you are new to it, use a tape recorder (or MP3 recorder these days eg the Zoom ones) Sing along to the track fro a few days, bass solos, melody, horn solos etc just to fix it in your mind then play the track, sing your solo ideas over it and record the result (a bit like people do on YouTube bass play-alongs where their instrument is clearly heard but the track is still there) Then play it back and learn to play your sung lines (the best ones anyway) on the bass. Your voice is not as limited as your fingers and you will (hopefully) just naturally fit into the modes and scales used on the track.
I was checking on some search optimisation I've done on our site and found an agent that had our name on his site, but no link. I contacted him and apparently we had done work for him in the past. We hadn't, but one of our members had given him our details a few years back and we'd never followed up as we became quite busy through another agent. Anyway moving on... I asked him to link to our site, but he wanted an 'agent friendly' page. ie one with no contact names, numbers, emails, or prices on. I was thinking of creating a single page specifically for agents. What would be the best way to do this. Should I just get some free web space with an entirely different URL? Or can you recommend another way. eg MySpace is not supposed to be used by covers bands.
Ah yes well .... This is a perennial problem for agents - they want to place bands for the band's normal fee plus their commission. You have to separate the two markets: market one is your direct link to punters, market two is you selling your band to the agent. These markets have different requirements. Many moons ago when I still built sites I was asked to do two separate almost identical sites for a band - a normal one with full on search engine optimisation and direct booking contact info, and one with no contact details other than the agent's contact details. This also used techniques to try to prevent the site being found by Google (that was a challenge!)... Sadly, and despite my advice to split the markets effectively, it was a waste of time because the band used the same name for both markets. Thus any punters the agent directed at the "agent friendly" website to sus the band out just found the normal website the next time they googled the band's name .. The answer is to use two names for your band - one that you market yourselves and another that the agents can use. Then you either don't have a website for the Agent's band name or you do a restricted contact one. I've worked with bands that have even more names - one for each market. To keep the agents happy and feeding you gigs you should not link the two bands in anyway online. This means no links from one website to the other. Myspace is not great for covers bands selling into the general market covered by agents (weddings, functions, birthdays, clubs). This is because of its "interesting" layouts and appearance. We are all used to it now, as are originals bands bookers, rekkerd company A&R people etc but The Mother Of The Bride (your key decision maker here) will probably take one look, give up and head back to the agent's list or google to look for a band with a "proper" site. It's good if you have nothing else but it's not ideal for a functions band. So what is the ideal situation? A full on website, with full optimised SEO, showing all your pictures, MP3 downloads, Videos, all the normal selling stuff for a functions band but with a different name and just links to your agents. Here's an example: http://e2music.com/index.html
It's the standard high mass bridge that comes on the Ltd models. All I have done is swap the white plate to a black one and fitted some Artec pickups courtesy of Paul Rose. P.
Cool Did't know they did that. I bet that all sounds great. The standard psudo Fender bent tin bridges the normal ones come with are a real achillies heel. Swapped for a Gotoh and they basses sound and feel much better.

The jam session I go to has a Marlin PJ like that as the beater bass - er well not exactly like that I think that's the custom version - and it's a fine instrument and sounds really good in some hands. Cherish and treasure it Anyway I think this should competition should really be for the "cheapest functional bass"

Usually stick that canon from the Magic Roundabout theme in our gigs somewhere .. Just the first bit of this rendition Then for fun I'd add Schools out by Alice Cooper and Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield.
Totally agree. Why so BIG?
To shovel more earth? It even says "Earth Mover" next to the headstock in the advert Mentioned this before when they first came out, and I've not seen one in the flesh, but in pictures the headstock is fugly (IMO). Is that why the official publicity pictures hardly show it? The "ergonomic" arrangement of the tuners is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. I thought that about the T bass too .. And then there's the contouring and finish that looks like an onyx phone set from 1973 ... mind you they are from Essex ... (ducks Mrs OldGit's Essex girl fist) Now you may call me shallow and superficial but I really care what the bass I play looks like as much as what it sounds like. Sorry Mark ..
I'm deciding to sell some of my lesser used basses to fund some more! The first is a Fender Precision Special, with active preamp, passive seymour duncan -SPB3 and SJB-3b pickups. Just been rewired so there's no problems there whatsoever. A few headstock chips and some wear to the back of the neck but nothing that affects tone or playability. I'll also throw in a ritter hardshell case. I'm looking for ideally £300 collected. N.B. the white mark there isn't a chip, just a reflection.
Could you fill in the details a bit please: What year is it (or serial number) Country of manufacture (MIM MIA MIJ CIJ), does that include the case and also where you are. Thanks OG -

Is that the Argus Remastered tour? I think both versions of the band are out doing it. We had Ted Turner's one here last month A very influential band and album in my formative years as a bass player. Congratulations to you and your band. Where and when is the gig? -
Sources of Jazz funk arrangements - sibelius or suchlike?
Not useful I know but have you seen the "scorch" system that comes with sib 4? You can actually scan a piece of sheet music and it'll convert it into a fully editable sib file! There were also roumors of a sib program in which you could upload an mp3 and it would convert it into a full arrangement but I don't know if they ever pulled it off. Mad technology!
Computers are taking over the world! -
I know this is a old thread but if you have a powerball, get it going and hold it over the pickup on you bass. It makes an amazing sub-drop sound! Probably not a great idea to do it at high volume caus i guess is could damage you speakers!
Waaah That's brilliant! A great effect. One of those things to add to your records to get people guessing like The Boxer's backwards gunshot sound ... One or two of my watches "click" through the amp when they are close to my pickups too This sounds like a whole new thread ....

Walk on the wild side - how to play with only one bass?
OldGit replied to jmstone's topic in General Discussion
+1 Met him when I was a sallow youth and had a go on his famous Jazz - the one on Walk ... I believe he only got a session fee and not a percentage of the earnings from the recording .. Poor bu553r. Still "Granddad" probably keeps him in Horlicks ... -
Give Steve a ring. Not only is he a first class valve amp tech, he's also a pretty good harp player - http://www.stevesamps.co.uk/
Thanks matey. Rang Steve and he was indeed very helpful. Seems the one I'm looking at is rather expensive for its condition so I'll go and negotiate...
