I have unfortunately found a slight problem with the Hercules stand solution that OG and I use for the Stagg. Truth be told it was an A.I.S.F.M (Alcohol Induced Stupid Ferkin Mistake) however I thought Id relay this cautionary tale. I had a little gig last week that was just a few guys thrown together for a colleagues leaving do and as I was part of the party, I had more than a few sherbets before setting up. When I picked the Stagg up to start playing, the volume knob was bent up towards the neck. Seems in my pissed state I had put the stand into the Hercules collar but instead of the weight of the Stagg acting on the push fit arm as normal, it was fully supported by the volume pot. Not for long I dont think. Any way, when I got home, I took off the volume knob to try to bend the pot shaft back and it had disintegrated inside the knob. Not good. So Im now looking for a replacement shaft if I can find one or I may be forced to replace the entire pot. Im taking it into a guitar tech I use today but I cant leave it with him as Im gigging on friday. I dont suppose anyone knows if I can just get a replacement shaft and get away with it.
Oh nasty .. I hope it's a normal pot ..
He'll be talking about a technique that's used to test for areas of paint being re-touched/re-finished/over-sprayed - it involves using a UV light (in a dark room) where the non-original paint areas will show up darker. But he meant to say 'Blacklights'...
Oh ta
cheers. Its started already, i want to get lessons in before i develope too many bad habits. Anyone else find it hard to put the rests in? Brute force doesnt do much. Any techniques?
Yeah just do the rest on your side ("I don't have a rest on my side" - Bluebottle, The Goons, 1957) Get one prong at a time and wiggle it into its hole, crushing the nylon thing down a bit. Then take it out and do the other one. Then they will both go in at the same time. Raise the bass so that the nut is at eye level and the prong should rest just in front of your left hip. Lessons are good though.
I don't think that 4-way cable will be robust enough to stand being trampled on on-stage. How many ways do you need and how long? What would the benefit be of George L's over what you already have?
Sorry, I left out a basic requirement - I pack the leads into my rack, ie they stay plugged in, so they have to roll up small enough. The George Ls are very thin and will roll up tiny which is why they are an option. However I still have the problem of holding them together.. The cables I have running from the rack back to the front of the stage are - Wireless to pedals, pedals to amp, MB channel switch cable (stereo jack plugs, Dave you made me one before). I leave everything plugged in within the rack so I can just pull out the cables and plug things in to the pedals. I haven't seen how it bends but I suspect the cable wrap thing won't roll up small enough or enjoy the constant rolling and unrolling. Then there's the 9v footpedal power as well but as I have to power my monitor and fan at the front of the stage that's less of an issue . Here's a pic: Red cable is the foot switch cable, two black cables with Velcro ties on the right are the send and return Thanks OG

Hi I was thinking of replacing the guitar cables etc I use for my effects to rack linking with this 2 or 4 way cable from Maplins. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...14&doy=15m3 This is to speed up setting up and breaking down and also clearing up the cable clutter on stage .. Does anyone use it? Is it likely to compromise my sound? Should I just invest in George L's?
Anyone got any nice big heads/cabs I can blag for Cardiff on the 20th? More the merrier, and when I say 'merrier', I don't mean 'merrier', I mean 'doomier'. Hoping for some 15s, that way I can run 18, 15, 12 and 10, enough mixed drivers to implode the world.
You can borrow my C rig: My loaner Peavey 300 combo It has a 15 ... I got that 'cos -A it's damn fine piece of kit, - B it sounds awsome and is loud enough for pub gigs with a drummer and two loud guitarists. - C it looks so terrible that no one is likely to think it's any good, RatBike stylee - D it was very cheap - E I can offer an alternative to people asking to borrow my proper stuff.

Ha ha Thank god for Bob on the journey home from gigs He is right, that's a fab tune and words though I was inserting the lead guitar bits in my head as I listened ... Have to put that on the stereo later ....

John Illsley the bass player from Dire Straits was on Bob Harris last night talking about his new band. He's formed a band with a guy who was playing in a covers band - with a fabulous voice .... There's hope for us yet! Nice to see him back even it he was playing acoustic guitar ...

Fundraiser in an hall that was nice size, good floor, big stage but the most awful sound. Repeat gig so we went prepared - all amps, cabs, micstands , monitors on foam, rubber feet, my Gramma pad or carpet, careful adjustment on the PA EQ helped a bit but a weird ringing on any E notes all night .. Still, great enthusiasm from the crowd so a really nice night with a fair wedge collected for the good cause and some very nice comments at the end. The laff of the night was our newish young Dave getting carded when he went to the offie for some beer - he's 31 We're saving up for the shopkeeper to get an eye test
The whole point of Jon Anderson's lyrics are not that they make sense or tell a story, they simply fit into the song. I'd have to agree about CS getting 'his' sound on any bass. I can a get a similar sound on my gold bass but never could on an actual Ric
Yeah I know .. as a Yes fan of many years (well of the first eponymous album to Close to the Edge anyway) I've heard this.. but imagine if they fitted the song AND made sence. Perfect. I agree it's in the fingers, and that was hardy a great recording but I thought bits of his playing sounded rather Jazz bass-like
Hello all, my 1st posting on Basschat. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Shuker JJB1 last week, 8 months waiting list. It's incredible, everything that his 70s Precision should have been, lighter with extra wound pick-ups for more growl. 1 thing I should mention is that JJ must have hands like shuvels, it's a seriously wide neck. Another work of genious from Jon Shuker, it's a seriously well made bass.
Hi there, welcome to Basschat and also to the Shuker owners club. there's a fair few of us here now .. Please let me know if you ever want to sell the JJB My Shuker P5 is a JJB with a few mods so I know exactly what you mean and yes, we do have hands like shovels
It's a bit of a story - we've had trouble keeping drummers and have had a temp for a while now. He's given notice and so being at the proverbial crossroads, a debate sprung up over which direction to turn if we could be arsed finding a new drummer. The guitarist and me wanted to move away from soul but the singer didn't so things got a bit sour. It all went quiet so I took the step of putting some ads on muso boards just in case and nobody seemed that interested so I found another band(s). I told NGE that if they wanted to carry on I'd leave the new band but the singer doesn't want to carry on so that's it then. I think the underlying reason is we've done too many gigs in the last 2 years and we're all a bit jaded. Driving 40 miles to play to 6 people in the middle of winter ain't much fun I guess.
Take a year off and have a set date to meet up and see how things are going in a year's time. Leave the door open.

Yeah you could ask Jimijimi - he Custom Shop Fender bass turned up on ebay being sold by a shop after he lent it to someone :0 I don't think this will happen here (unless it's stolen from the gig of course) but it's just not a good idea
Get a contract printed out. Get her to sign it each time she wants to take your bass out of the house. S.P.
in blood ... £300 is plenty for a beginner rig and bass. In fact if she buys used and you help her it could be enough for the first 20 years of her playing career. Start "finding" adverts of basses and rigs on here and Gumtree and offer to take her to see them. Hopefully she'll get the hint.
