Some really cool relicing you've done there mate
Ou7shined replied to Soloshchenko's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Anyone that's thinking of buying should probably ask for some pics from a different angle. I don't like how the grain angle changes dramatically on the "reliced" areas (indicating a fair old change in depth). -
I had never personally experienced the phenomena, until one day recently I noticed a quiet G though my Korg PX4D (headphones on) and yet it was perfect through my rig, my lappy and everything else I could find to put it through. This would indicate to me that it is an eq/frequency thang.
You got one too? Did anyone NOT buy one?
Dear god no. But I did inherit a bad neck off one to have some fun with.
I haven't measured it, but the 10" (for the fingerboard radius!) quoted above sounds reasonable...
It aught to... coz it's right.
In the machine heads auction, he says it's not for sale. So expect it to turn up attached to a [s]reloused[/s] reliced Squier body sometime soon.
There's something very bad lurking under the tuner bushes in those pics.

She is finished but I'm kind of dealing with a loss in the family just now and can't seem to get my sh*t together - but don't fear I'll will and I'll be back with full update on the refret, altered pick-guard design and how she sounds etc. soon. Until then here's a wee taster ...
.. he's off / it's up again (must finally be back from the holidays). Back up to £175 .. can't be bothered comparing with the previous listing(s), but I'm sure there'll be changes ... :-....
The neck twist still is there but don't worry a new strings is all it needs.... oh and you can actually hear that the pups have been hand wound.
Fascinating discussion. No disrespect guys, but I'd love to hear someone who actually knows how it works explain the physics. While we're getting down to it, though, presumably the tuning posts (specifically their sound transmission properties) are as important as the bridge, but I cannot recall any discussion or marketing gumph ever mentioning them with respect to sound.
They may carry a small amount of influence (perhaps that's why most strings are tipped with silk - to dampen any sympathetic response) but I theorise (no proof folks just opinion ) that after the string has past the nut and gone through a break angle it no longer carries sufficient influence on the main part of the string and what little that could be transfered to the pickup while the main part of the string is vibrating is so minute as to be negligible. You can of course cause the headstock section of strings to vibrate "prrring" which will then in turn set off a slight harmonic response on the main length of the strings but only if they are not played at the same time.
I've found this from Premier Guitar Website One of the smallest parts of a guitar is also the most discussed one - the nut.......
Thanks GW that pretty much echoes my experience too - albeit with a limited number of materials to experiment with. I think it's worth pointing out that when I put a brass nut on a guitar the difference was far more marked than the change on a bass - then again as we're dealing with higher frequencies (and the nut only seems to have influence the top end of the spectrum) that is only to be expected.
No-only tried two of them on one bass, but I couldn't hear any difference at all. Once you fret a note, you're stopping the strings vibration at the nut,so it becomes pretty irrelvent.
But you're not illuminating the major points of contact for the string by fretting a note. It's easy to forget the nuts importance - I'd like to see someone hold an untethered string in tune just by pressing it on a fret with a finger tip. The fret is only a third point of contact that allows you to select and increase the vibrations on the "playing" side. The string doesn't become limp above the fretted note.
Really? I find that amazing. Personally, I think it's all bollocks and the nut should be made of a material similar to the frets. Brass is probably best. I find it hard to understand why most basses don't have zero frets. it makes perfect sense, Patrice Vigier has the right idea. He also believes through necks are a bit stupid. He's right I think.
The brass one made the biggest difference. It was more toppy and clangy a bit like fresh stainless strings.
I've used Tusq, brass, bone, phenolic and cheap plastic nuts and honestly cannot hear the slightest bit of difference once a note is fretted, and very little difference in an open string.
Have you tried all those different nuts in one bass in one sitting?
-
Whatever..... as soon as you fret a note the nut makes no difference. Even on an open string it's a pretty minute difference.
Have you researched this or is this just your opinion. I've done some basic testing with plastic, tusq and brass nuts and have experienced the tonal difference for myself and that difference is still audible fretted although to a lesser extent.
-
Bone then
Nope tusq.
-
I does make a difference - obviously it's easiest to hear on an open string. I like tusq nuts.

... and it almost looks like Fender on the headstock. Triple win.
Pete, I know it's not Pre-EB, but I have tracked down an 86 MM which condition wise looks amazing and it's around the £1200 mark - does that seem..I hesitate to use the word reasonable when you consider what these things cost at source to make...but is it realistic in the current market?
It's pretty hard to pin the tail on MusicMan donkeys at the best of times and as Pete has outlined these times are no less tricky. My gut feeling (given the info so far) is that we would be looking at a sub 1K figure for this one. Mid 80's 'rays have very little to offer over the current models except mutes and mojo (how about that for the name of a second hand bass shop? ) so the canny buyer has to ask "what am I getting?".
