1.
..... Bridge wise you've certainly given me something to think about though OS. It was partly the looks that sold it of course, but engineering wise it looked like it should work. What hi-mass options might you suggest? ....
Well obviously there is the Badass but many find them a tad ugly (not to mention overpriced) these days. Hipshot and Gotoh ones are very well constructed and fender do their own version which looks the biz. There are a number of cheaper yet equally as massy versions on ebay.
2.
.... Anyway, my recommendation is to add a MM pickup, but right up against the P pickup. This is where the MM sweetspot is. If you put a MM pickup nearer the bridge is will tend to sound weak and honky. It will NOT sound like a STingray for sure. I'm talking about something like this ... I have tried loads of different PJ's and twin P basses. My favourite overall is the MM/P combination with the MM butted right up to the P.
Actually the MM and the DG side of the P pups partially occupy each others territory. In order to keep the exact MM sweet spot I found the best compromise was to reverse the P.
3. It has shades of Sadowskyness about it.... but I don't think it actually is.
4. As with the others, with my PJ's or my PMM I invariably gravitate to the P pup - it's nice having the flexibility there but I just never seem to play with the back pups.
5. I love the carving (fairly reminiscent of the demon bass I made last year) but the pickup placement seems to be at the expense of the design.
6. The SD you mentioned is a good call. Delano and Dimarzio are my personal favs.
7. All P pups are in effect humbuckers. I wouldn't get anything below the 50 quid price bracket if you want to upgrade a stock Fender pup.
8. I put a Babicz on a build of mine (coincidentally a fretless too) around the time they came out and found it to be all hype and no substance - even just holding it in your hand you know its not got to meet its high expectations. Unless you simply like it for it's striking looks (which in my view is its only plus point) I'd go with something more tried and tested... perhaps with a higher mass if that's your thing. Just my 2p.
9. Assuming the tr still works to a degree could you shim the pocket and start the setup afresh?
10.
Yep I go along with that although I think some who "play bass" can still exert some creativity in how they interpret the bass lines they copy.
Very true. Often it's how you discover there is any talent at all.
11.
Fixed for you. .....
Depends on your perspective I suppose. Talking about numbers then yes lower, but if you are talking about load on the amp then what I said.
12. In the bands that I see, I think it simply boils down to this... there are bassists and there are people who play the bass. One has a more inherent creativeness (this, I don't think comes with practice - it may develop over time but if it is not there in the first place it's just not there) while the other has a more "paint by numbers" approach and plays what they have to in order for there to be a bass line in the song.
13.
Hmm, I think you may risk frying something if you switch the speaker to 4ohms when it designed to run only with 8ohms?
True, if it is designed to run at 8ohms only but most guitar amps are happy to take either 8 and 4ohm loads. Any higher and then you may start to smell something nasty.
14. Nope its more about ohms and driver efficiency. Putting in a higher wattage speaker may in fact make it quieter as your amp could be (and probably is) too weedy to drive it fully. If your existing speaker is 8ohms then replacing it with a similarish 4ohm one should get you a bit more oomph. But at the end of the day a 30w amp is pretty much a 30w amp.
15.
Yes, to confirm..... the sunburst Rob DeLeo model is now sold. .....
.... and has been immediately flipped onto ebags for 500 smackeroos http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=191032630987&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1120 (sorry if link no worky - posting this from phone) .... or someone has pinched your picture. Either way, poor show.
16. I once heard someone say that Transits have been around since Christ was a boy. Turns out he was right.
17. I want the DeLeo... but with the 3 knob control plate. Who am I kidding? I want them both.
18. Likes to rewrite ebay T&Cs then says.... 7. If you overlook any of the points above then any bid you place will be cancelled as null and void as it breaches the specific terms and conditions of this auction. In addition you may be reported as a Non Paying Bidder Nice guy.
19.
My 2003 SUB is wired in series, it looks stock and the previous owner claims he did nothing to it (owner from new). It's a nice punchy sound that works really well with teh 2EQ preamp, in my opinion. My SUB5 was wired in parallel, it was a 2004, I think. Very weird as EBMM did not make an alnico parallel 5-string pickup at the time... Mysteries!!! When it comes to sound and playability... I am not sure there is any significant difference between a 2EQ Stingray and a SUB, as long as the lack of contours don't bother you. I have a Stingray and two SUBs, one is parallel and one series... the parallel one is as Stingrayish as it could be. The series one is another Stingray that went to the gym, that's all ;p
I was talking about SUB 4s only.
20.
Did it come like that new? Is it a Sub Sterling or Sub Stingray? If it is permanently in series it will not sound like a Stingray - my SR5 sounds more active Fender is series and more Stingray in parallel - still a good sound though. A lot of Subs have been used as project basses so you never totally know what you're getting. However a parallel wired one with 2 band EQ will sound pretty close to any regular 2 band Ray. ...
So when you requested someone to confirm this series/parallel spec were you looking for members from here to oblige or will you trust only a sworn affidavit direct from the Ernie Ball corporation? As you apparently don't view my experience (and by proxy the many others who have discussed and experienced this exact thing both here and on the EB site) as valid perhaps you like me to contact EB forthwith and get the official word. I'd be more that happy to deliver you a swift one from the Balls this Xmas. Have a cool Yule doc.
21.
Not according to the company who made them - they say they were all parallel - after all parallel wired pick up is part of the Stingray magic. One or two members have dismantled their Sub pick ups and found them wired in series - did they come from the factory like that? Who knows! Perhaps someone can confirm. ....
Well according to the people who own them.... No "dismantling" necessary. Just whip 'em out. My 'ray pup and my SUB pup....
22.
Differently voiced pup???
Stingrays are wired parallel, SUBs in series. And one uses ceramic magnets while the other alnico (I canna mind which is which just now).
23. Having been a 'ray owner for some years, I used to think all this weak g stuff was just some sort of bad mouthing of 'rays as mine was even across the board. Then one day I plugged into a headphone amp and lo and behold the g was lacking. Plugged back into my amp and everything was hunkydory again. I concluded that it must be a frequency/eq thing.
24.
does he have space to fit a pingray pickup setup in there too?
Sure looks like it
