I thought you meant the nice sound you get when laying the stick on the skin and tapping the beat on the rim. Used in quieter passages usually. Is that also a rimshot? I'm a drummer so I should know these things, but I don't. I don't think I've ever hit a rimshot as described in the original post.
You're thinking of 'cross-sticking' (although other terms are sometimes used, including, wrongly, 'rim-shot'...). Both techniques are effective; all the more so for their rarity. As usual, it's a question of dynamics. 'Variety is the spice of life' and all that, what..?

Sad, isn't it..? Some 'bassists' slap, too. It stems from the same glands, I reckon.

No bad, or poor, drummer becomes good overnight. It's in the nature of the instrument, maybe more than some others. It's a long, arduous and for quite a while, unrewarding path. The sooner one treads it, the sooner one progresses, but the road is long. Some pick it up sooner than others, of course, but the number of 'natural' drummers is homeopathically low.

I can play a solo flawlessly; by definition, there's no-one around to keep time with. Keeping a solo in time is not that easy. An exercise, to illustrate..? Listen to the original 'Take Five', with Joe Morello on drums. Count, mentally, the 5/4 before he starts the solo, and keep the count going as he plays. You'll find that, throughout, he's spot on, and comes back in exactly 'on the beat'. Impressive stuff.

Humble apologies, mea culpa. I'd put it down to old age, but I've always been scatterbrained, so...

It's a shame, but HJ is right ^ . A drummer (or any other musician, really...) trying to play above their level of competence cannot be reigned in on the spot. They have to go back to their rudiments and get them down 'pat' first, and gradually hone their skills. You put up and shut up, or walk, unfortunately. If these really are buddies, recording the session and performing a 'post mortem' is a good way forward, at least to get the problem recognised as such. There is no rapid cure, though, so the repertoire that they're bashing out with such enthusiasm will take a hit. Will they support playing 4/4 to a metronome for a few weeks..? Maybe, maybe not. Are there no drum teachers in the vicinity..?
...What does programme mean?
Oh dear. I hear another can of worms creaking open. This Sales topic is not the best place for the long answer; ask the same question in 'General Discussion' for more detail. Suffice it to say, here, that you're right; 250w would be a more 'standard' rating (for all that wattage alone means anything at all, anyway...).
It's a GK Backline 600 head going thru a BLX 410 and a BLX 210. I've been told that it's possibly a ground loop issue. I do believe that I need a technician to come and check it out as one of the speaker inputs at the back of the head is temperamental at the best of times... requiring some wriggling of cables to get it to work!! Apart from that, it's a lovely amp.
If the amp, on its own, with only the cabs plugged in, is making a buzzing sound, it's not a ground loop. Don't heed the sirens a'calling; take it to an amp tech and get it fixed, or at least estimated. He'll be able to fix the faulty speaker output at the same time.
Hello.. Anyone know what the deal is with eliminating that f@@king amp buzz? I know there's always gonna be some but this is pretty severe. I've unplugged the bass. I've checked the cables. I've had my head melted by watching people explaining it on YouTube. Went to Maplin today and was sold some ferrite cable clips. Still got buzz... Please help!!!
If there's an appreciable sound from an amp that's got no cable plugged into the input, there's a very strong chance that's there's a fault inside. A decent technician will be able to diagnose the cause, in all likelihood, and suggest a remedy, with an estimate of cost. Tell us a bit more about yourself (what make / model of amp, where abouts are you, is this at home or on stage etc ..?) and you'll doubtless get some good advice as to the way forward. Over to you ...

Can I make a bound, block inlay neck fretless?
...am worried about the tone while sliding on the fingerboard. Am guessing the tone might change when the string over the wood vs. over the block inlay.
Not that human ears can perceive. Sold Paiste Hi Hat Cymbals
Dad3353 replied to gary mac's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Indeed, as a novelty effect, used (very...) sparingly, there is much to be said for a bit of 'trash' in a kit; some 'musical' genres even rely on it..! To me, the hi-hat is the king-pin of a kit; any lack of quality in that instrument will become sharply apparent, as (in the styles I tend to play...) it's insidiously omnipresent. One can adjust a snare by tuning, dampening (the old 'fat wallet' trick...) or changing heads; toms, too, can be treated for different sounds. Cymbals are very difficult to (successfully...) modify; they're good or not. Good hi-hats can make a kit. A poor pair will ruin any kit. (... but what would I know..? I'm only a drummer... )
