1. I'll give my usual, cheery, encouragement, then... It's the first forty years that are the hardest, after which things tend, sometimes, to get (slightly...) better. I doubt you'll be needing 'better' gear at all, still less after only 10 weeks (but it's not a bad idea to be interested in different stuff...). Anyway, by then, you'll already be in two bands..!
 2.
Of these, I used to use Goldwave quite happily. But I defected to (wait for it...) Audacity cos it's simpler! The feature that's going to be hard to replicate is the splitter. Setting up a number of cue points and hitting "split on cue" is pretty straightforward in A*d*c*ty but it's not something that DAWs I've used are geared up to. (Stands by to be corrected...)
There are, indeed, threshold detection bits'n'bobs in Reaper, but I'd probably just do it by eye for such a simple task (I've done it many times...). It's very easy to see any blanks, slice 'em out, drag to another track and refine, do the next one, render the lot once finished... It can be done by auto-detection, but it's probably not worth setting it all up for so little. Should take more than a few minutes, I'd say..?
 3. Audacity has a bit of a quirk concerning mp3 rendering. I don't pretend to know why, but one has to import a couple of files for it to work. A 'one-time' bit of a faff (technical term...) which HJ apparently objects to; he has his own reasons. I use Audacity quite a lot, but for shear ease of use, I'd still choose Reaper for the usage HJ describes above; that could be simply down to familiarity on my part, though, as Audacity is certainly capable of it. Of the alternatives, Wavosaur is a decent enough option which I use, too, and can recommend.
 4.
... My needs are VERY simple ... take a WAV file from a rehearsal or a gig (perhaps 2Gb, usually less), save individual tracks as mp3 files, maybe apply some amplification, maybe opt for a fade-in & fade-out, erm, that's about it. ...
Reaper will do all of this (and much, much more, of course...), and can be trialled for 60 days, with complete functionality, for free. If a licence is desired, it's a modest $60 for personal use. Import (or 'drag'n'drop'...) the WAV into Reaper, delimit the required sections, 'normalise' the volume, apply 'volume automation' in a couple of 'clicks' for fade-in-out if required and render the designated regions to mp3. Easy-peasy, rapid, full control, excellent audio quality... Try it and see..? There are excellent 'mastering' options, too, either within Reaper, or by external treatment (I use AAMS...) which can do wonders in enhancing a rough 'whole band' stereo track. Simple as pie (without, maybe, the polish of a totally 'pro' studio session...); the difference can be striking. Just sayin'.

 6.
...how do you do the video link thing?
Using the link offered by the 'Share' button, and removing the 's' from the leading 'https', like this ...
 7.
If they're playing to a click, otherwise it could possibly be a right car crash.
Why would that be..?
 8. Electronic drums..? Whatever next..! Electric basses, perhaps..? Nah, that'd never catch on..!
 9.
Wasn't Squire originally a String brand when Fender purchased?
No, that would have been Squier Strings.

 11.
Defo not bashing him...that was just in jest !!!!...
Glad to hear that..! He'll very likely need to do some 'wood-shedding', just the same, preferably on rudiments and stick control/accentuation (as referenced with the books, above ^...). It's not the kind of technique that just 'comes' in rehearsals with other folks, unless you've all a few days to spend..? Even just a snare, or practise pad (even a cushion, or pillow..?) will do, but a bit of time each day, conscientiously going over the exercises will reap enormous reward. How do I know this..? Hmm...
 12.
so................ its all his own fault and he has no one to blame but himself ! I'll tell him. He is the kind of guy to go "ok. will work on that"
So, what's the beef..? He's good with rods (that's a Good Thing...),and wants to use sticks, but with better technique concerning dynamics..? Isn't that just what most of the posts above are suggesting that he do..? I'd have thought that that's a Good Thing, too. Another solution is to muffle the drums (I've used elasticated flannel pillow cases, for instance...), but cymbals are more delicate, as the thinner, less 'noisy' ones will break anyway if they're beaten too hard. No, the real answer, whatever the kit, is stick control. If he's already a good drummer, it won't be hard to adopt another approach, and it's very interesting to get into, but it does take Work (Ok, a four-letter word for some...). That's not insulting the bloke; quite the opposite. If he's worth it, he'll take on board any of these (suitably worded...) suggestions, I'd have thought. No need to bash the fellow, just a reasonable amount of human diplomacy. Maybe this is the wrong forum for that, though..?

 14.
In any context when someone says money doesn't matter, yes it's very hard to understand. Keep in mind, I'm a Yankee. We're a society that's really weird[s] when it comes to money[/s]. Blue
Fixed. ...

 17. A darned-heavy 2 x 15 HH here in Lower Normandy, if you're really stuck, or an Ampeg 4 x 10, or Fender 2 x 15 (... but you'd have to be really stuffed for it to be worth the trip..! Still, you're welcome to borrow 'em, just the same... ) . Looks like you'll get something sorted, so well done, all.
 18.
It's a weird one. Yesterday I described why I didn't like a particular Jaco Pistorius bass part, and was called "ignorant". I didn't comment on the man, or the rest of his work, but apparently having an opinion makes me ignorant. Oh well.
Not quite fair, I'd say; the exact post in question was 'Ignorant, ', as a sly dig in the ribs, not an overt insult. It was referring to a previous little spat over definitions. No malice was intended. Just sayin'.
 19.
Oh I dunno you know. I do like a bit of Trout.
I share your culinary tastes, but never tire of the 9th, personally. S'all good, really.

 23.
... 50's STYLE dad, I know you're a drummer but try to pay attention ...
If you've not already read it (and it would seem not...), could I suggest a perusal of Mo Foster's excellent book '17 Watts?: First 20 Years of British Rock Guitar, the Musicians and Their Stories'. You may not be so keen on a '50s STYLE bass after that..! Hofner 500/5, maybe..?
 24.
No Jazzes in the 50's Tom ...
Surely this merits more explanation..? What '50s amp are you using for this new venture..? And what 'period' strings..? I'm glad I'm a drummer; would't want to have to play on a '50s kit..! Are your band mates equally as zealous as you, or are they a sensible lot..? This forum would be the poorer without these topics, though..!
 25.
Yes, brilliant. I presume you have heard the live Orchestral album ? Vince Mendoza and his terrific arrangements. Personally I only stumbled upon it last year. Not sure how I missed it to be honest. Sublime version of 'Hejira'
Well, in my own humble opinion, it doesn't get any better than this on this planet, 'between the forceps and the stone'. The very definition of 'sublime'. There are, all through JM's long and fruitful career, so many pure gems; several of them are graced with a contribution from JP. Look, it's no exaggeration to say that it's even better than the Grateful Dead, and even Schubert..! There, I've said it..!
