1. Price drop bump! Now £50 posted Alex
2. First come, first served with me. Luckily I don't rely on music as a main source of income so I can afford to say no to higher profile or higher paying gigs. I'd rather maintain integrity and dep the gigs out! So yeah, keep a diary well and make sure you're straight up with all your projects. Truckstop
3. If you're playing gigs that require a mic'd bass drum, you'll need to mic the snare and, at the very least, use a single overhead for the toms and cymbal too. Otherwise, get your drummer to buy a louder bass drum or tune his current one a little higher so it cuts more. Truckstop
4. It's mainly the used stuff I find hideously overpriced in music shops. My local shop has a beaten up old Yamaha RBX (original shape and headstock) with rusty pickups and bridge etc, really bad shape for £285. Been there for years! I really like the look of it so I've been offering the owner £100 for it every few months when I go in for strings and stuff. Truckstop
5. Yeah, middy tone sounds horrible in isolation but in a band situation works just fine. Also make sure you're not scooping the EQ on your BTB too. I'd cut the bass entirely from the onboard EQ. Do you blend the pups or just favour one or the other? I'd be using the bridge pup on its own if I was suffering from a bass heavy tone. Have you tried replacing your strings? Old strings can sound very dull and lifeless. A fresh set should put some zing back into your sound! You say you play fingerstyle; where? If you play close to the neck, you'll have a really thuddy tone. You'll get more definition playing nearer the bridge. Again, if you could point the speaker towards your head that'll help a lot! Truckstop
6. Oh, it's fretless! Hadn't realised until now! Well then, a little tinkering with the nut may help. You can cut the slots a little shallower which should help. Poor that Overwater Tanglewood don't seem to have made efforts to ensure that the bridge is flexible enough for a fretless bass and that (possibly) the nut hasn't been properly engineered. Truckstop
7. I wonder what happens to the stuff that doesn't sell? Even if it is broken stuff I wouldn't like to see it all destroyed! Truckstop
8. Hold fire dudes, this the returns and repairs stuff. You can't test before you buy so you might end up with a useless amp! I'd bet all the good ones were nabbed by dealers a long time ago and all that's left is the stuff that's too tricky to fix quickly. Approach with caution! Also, don't forget you have to pay 41% on top of your winning bid. I, like you, was initially excited and have now decided to steer well clear! Truckstop
9. Yes, it is an interesting trend. In nearly all the bands I've worked with over the last few years, at least one band member in each has been a web developer/designer. Mostly keyboardists but sometimes guitarists. Truckstop
10. Why don't you just say that your gear's in the garage? Which it is. The fact that the thieves have stolen the van too makes no difference! Truckstop
11. Lovely job pal, but I think it looks better without the pickguard! Gotta show off the wood! Truckstop
12.
Just out of curiosity, as I know none of these, I gave 'em a listen each (yes, I had, in fact, heard the Nina Simon one, but...). You're saying that a lot of drummers you've heard can't get these down 'pat'..? I'm amazed. What the heck can they be doing, then..? These are basic, minimalistic numbers (except for the 'Zuton' Valerie, which is just plain duff..!). You must be right, of course, but if these aren't right, what are they doing to Sound Garden, or RATM..?
Exactly. A lot of amateur drummers and bassists just dick about and think that because there's space they can mess about and try and elbow loads of fills and runs in. IMO, discipline is the quality that separates amateurs from pros. Mark Ronson's Valerie is the version I mean and can be tricky for drummers to keep the beat consistent. I'm amazed when I see bands attempt it with completely the wrong feel! Truckstop
13. Cool, have fun!! I take you have guitarist issues cleared up? Truckstop
14. Buy a synth keyboard and use that instead. Much easier and more intuitive when playing with the oscillating effects etc. Novation Mini-Nova is well worth a look as is the MicroKorg. Less than £200 (second hand) and much more useful and tweakable than pedals. Truckstop
15. Mustang Sally, Valerie, Sex On Fire, Forget You, Feelin' Good etc etc Almost all the groove based standards sound terrible because either the drummer doesn't get it or the bassist doesn't get it. Most bassists I see tend to be quite good actually, it's mainly the drummers that tend to have not listened to the songs properly and put a completely inappropriate beat behind the song. Doomed from the start! Less is more!!!! Truckstop
16. With a Terror, it'd be more than loud enough for small to medium size gigs, not to mention perfectly matched! Many basschatters use the Terror/SP210 or 212 rig and are very happy indeed. Theoretically speaking you'd expect to be able to run a 500w amp at full volume through a 700w cab without damage but it doesn't work like that unfortunately. There's always danger with any amp through any cab of causing over-excursion. You would hear the speakers complaining before you got too loud to damage anything. I've put a PF500 through it at almost full volume without any problems (at 8ohms, the PF500 chucks out 350w). Mind you, I do cut the bass quite a lot which improves efficiency. Hope this helps? Alex
17. Happy to ship if you don't mind paying for it! Yes, normally 600w but have replaced original Orange speakers with 350w Eminence Deltas. One of the originals had been blown by its previous owner. I contacted Orange (they're based in Borehamwood, a few miles away from me) and they recommended the Deltas as the best replacement. I've still got the original working Orange driver that'll I'll stick in a project cab one day. Cheers! Alex
18. I can imagine that this cab would suit DB down to the ground! PM me with an offer! Alex
19. Hello all, Would like to swap for a 4x10. Haven't got anything in mind so PM me and we'll chat. I'm happy to listen to offers and would be perfectly happy with an old Peavey or something plus some cash. So this is an Orange SP210 cab. The speakers are mounted one behind the other and are coupled. According to the blurb, this means that the SP210 kicks out more bass than a cab of a similar size. I could well agree with that. This cab is capable of some serious bass; I have to cut a lot of bass from the amp to avoid flooding the stage with the real low frequencies! Can also go very loud. The original speakers have been replaced with similarly powered and sounding 350w Eminence Deltas so rated 700w at 8ohms. I'd say the SP210 lends itself well to a traditional bass tone and sounds wonderful with my PF350. It's tiny. Seriously small! Quite heavy but an easy one handed carry. Its in good condition, theres a couple of very small nicks in the tolex which is all the damage I can see. Two speakons only in the back. Would keep because I'm happy with the sound but I'm really hankering for more speakers and I can't afford another SP210 to go with it! I'm Based in St. Albans and happy to drive to meet for the right deal. Anyone is welcome to come and try the cab out but would need to arrange in advance as we have a 6 month old in the house! 20. Nabbed a Peavey Max 700 off eBay. Go big or go home, eh? Will keep PF350 for home use. Aux In and headphone makes it very useful for home practice and can stay in the gig bag as a spare innit. Truckstop
21. I used to own a 90's Encore precision and that was a very decent instrument indeed. Lovely neck, pearlescent white in colour and strong pickups. I sold it when I accidentally broke the nut and bodged the repair. Never played the same after that Would happily own another one! Truckstop
22.
Pretty good one there Alex.
Thanks Lozz, but I actually stole that from somewhere else! Twitter, I think? Truckstop
23. Precisions sit in the mix and Jazzes sit on the mix. Truckstop
24. Sounds to me like a one cab solution would be best; carrying something fairly heavy once is better than having to make two trips! Look for a 4x10 with a decent power rating. It'll be more than enough for all gigging situations and you'll only have to make one trip. If you have 2 lightweight cabs, you'll still need to make two trips. Just because they're lighter doesn't make them smaller and less cumbersome! Truckstop
