    This is a fantastic book; clear and thorough with musical examples to illustrate everything. I learned so much from this when I got it (25 years ago now, yikes).

    Pretzel Logic and Aja are brilliant albums, though Royal Scam is my favourite.

    I played in a band and the drummer kept on at me for years saying I ought to check out Steely Dan as he thought I’d like them. I resisted for ages, until quite some time after that band finished. Then when I finally did check them out, I wish I’d done so sooner! Anyway, Vincent Garcia is a great player and his album is worth a listen.

    Just to clarify, it’s that root-fifth bass line in the piano that was lifted (the bit after the marimba bit). I think there is an edited version of the Dan track which omits that marimba opening; this might have been the first version I heard so in my head the Horace Silver bit was the intro. It was sometime after, when I got the remastered CD that I learned of the part that precedes that.

    Was going to wait until something of mine had sold to chip in, but who knows when that might happen so have donated now anyway as I’m sure Lee’s needs are more pressing than mine.
