For someone who doesn't like pedals etc...
stingrayPete1977 replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
The di box is hardly a distortion pedal really, all it is doing is trying to bring a clean amp and jazz bass up to where someone using a valve amp and jazz bass is, it doesn't but it helps. Would you regard an ampeg to be sucking all that lovely tone from a P bass? -
A direct answer to your question is because the quality of both instruments is on par, hence the market has gone that way.
Good post, I'd agree with that.

I agree the list looks fairly similar to what I'd expect a shop's sales to look like, in fact I'd expect more Sandbergs if anything.
Well, my skyline Bob Glaub feels better than the current US fenders do IMHO. It's hard to argue with the hardware, hipshot ultralites and a really sturdy if slightly odd shaped bridge are standard fair. The fit and finish is second to none and if you get an older one you also get Lindy Fralin pickups.
Second to none? I went shopping last weekend, the £1050 DJ5 was nice but the wiring was trapped under the control plate.... All that said I'd still rather buy a Lakland blind than a Fender even a USA like mine, lol

I've got one this saturday £90 between 3 of us The pub in question isnt going to book and pay a £500+ band if we dont do it, I wouldn't do it with my 4 piece function band and I will be using a minimal kit, its a tiny pub full of mates and will mainly be for a laugh.
Having no gig and thus time on my hands this evening, and being a bit sad anyway, I've just decided to put this perception to an empirical test, by counting the number of basses for sale by different manufacturers in the first two pages of the 'Basses for Sale' thread as it appears on my computer screen. Results suggest that perceptions are a bit different from reality: Fender 26 Warwick 9 Music Man 8 Ibanez 6 Squier 4 Yamaha 4 Self build/Custom build Fender copy 3 Status 3 Aria 2 Fernandes 2 Fodera 2 Lakland 2 Ritter 2 Spector 2 Aquilinia 1 Alembic 1 Alleva Coppolo 1 Carvin 1 Celinder 1 Clover 1 De Gier 1 Dean 1 Epiphone 1 G&L 1 Gretsch 1 Harley Benton 1 Hofner 1 Hohner 1 Lag 1 Line 6 1 Manne 1 Modulus 1 NS 1 Overwater 1 Peavey 1 Sadowsky 1 Sandberg 1 Taylor 1 Washburn 1 Methinks "sucked in by the plethora of options and finishes and then they're pretty average basses that you want to move on within a few weeks of delivery" may be a better description of some other manufacturers in this list than it is of Sandberg!
You need to factor in the new sales to used sales surely? If PMT sell 28000 Fenders a year to 1000 Sandbergs then the for sale section shows the same factor of basses being sold on.
All of that lovely tone sucked away by the Behringer pedal!
unless I had a big valve head I just find the passive jazz a bit empty, maybe if there was a second guitarist it would be ok but it needs something to fill it out a bit imo -

Used in anger last night, all going well until about 18 songs in, I start James Sit Down, two bars in silence! The bdi21 has fallen off the top of the amp and come unplugged making the preamp go open circuit velcro required -
new album, what to charge? or give it away?
stingrayPete1977 replied to winterfire666's topic in General Discussion
Charge something at least, let them pay more if they want to. i've had a hundred or so download my music, most paid, but when I counted there were 20 odd who hadn't. it got really annoying when people downloaded it for nothing. Why should we give music away for free ? It really annoys me this culture that's grown up about wanting music for nothing, we're partly to blame for giving it away for free in the first place. People will pay £3 for a cup of coffee or a supermarket sandwich, but object to buying music ?
This coffee analogy doesn't work though, if star bucks are comparable with a band like kings of Leon then your little coffee brand is no more than a cart in the street so no matter how Nice your coffee is unless you can get a few people to taste it those £3s are going to keep heading to star bucks. As musicians we make out that we are the only ones having to do this,I can't think of a business that hadn't had to sell them selves short initially to get a foot on the door. -
yup, you'll end up melting your shoes and tanning your feet if you're not careful...
TBH most of them are off most of the time, I was pimping it for effect, lol -

The Behringer BDi21? Its actually plugged in with a double ended 9v lead to the output from the TC polytune which handily has in and out, that gets its 9v from the plug in transformer and a lead with 5 ends in a daisy chain. Adaptor in mains outlet - Behringer AB100 pedal - Fishman pro eq - TC polytune - Behringer Bdi21 -

It's got loads of stuff on the back too, very well equipped you could say! It's two amps in one box and a set of master controls too though, to do that any other way would be even more knob happy -

I have ended up with this! Set up with my practice 1x10 cab to test my theory..... Genz Benz Shuttlemax 9.2 head that has 2 channels with an FX loop for each plus a global FX loop and EQ. Behringer BDi21 in/out of the Genz rear panel valve channel FX loop to warm up the Passive Jazz bass into the valve channel, select the AB pedal to line 2 for electric bass then select the valve channel on the head using the Genz Benz foot switch. Same lead and AB line 2 but switch to fairly flat set EQ FET channel on the Genz head when using a Stingray so no BDi21 unless you blend the two channels using the foot controller. Then when I swap to Double Bass I switch the AB pedal to line 1 which is the other lead (maybe a wireless at a later date stuck to the rear of the finger board) and that brings in the Fishman Platinum Pro EQ to shape the tone and help with feedback, I must remember to select the clean FET channel on the head using the foot controller or I will end up with the valve and BDi21 when using upright bass! Lol, easy right? what can go wrong?

Sorry, I did not word that very well, I mean what do the knobs do on it regarding pickup selection, treble, bass etc passive or active and what not?

The neck was nice on the one I tried, not sure about the maple and blocks on the black ones though, anyway who said anything about need!? My 2007 SR5 realistically does everything I will ever need, there are far superior players out there that use nothing else but that does not stop me buying more basses
