1. I have peeked under Owen's leopard print cover and there is indeed a lovely bass under there, the leopard skin is growing on me now though
2. Ooh yes its very nice! And thanks for that, I will keep am eye out on ebay and see what crops up
3. Report back, with pics too!
4. You are a gent regardless of what some people say
5.
they all seem to pale in comparison to a Lakland 55-02.
I tried a 55-14 and I have played a 55-94 and a 55-02 a few times they are great basses but they cant do Stingray as well I a Stingray, almost but no cigar. Lovely well built work horse one bass for every occasion though.
6.
I was wondering how long it would be before you showed up pete! I still think my USA SUB 5 was one of the most comfortable basses I've ever played, and the stingray 5 I played at pmt felt just as nice. If my current love a fair with spector doesn't last, I'll be right back to it?
Ive tried all sorts of basses and always end up back with a Stingray
7. Once you get it in the mix I normally find that adjusting the treble boost/cut is all I need for a whole range of styles all night, I'm a clumsy ham fisted get and it gets a bits toppy with a pick with the same settings as my finger style.
8. Hi Pete, its the intonation ones that are causing trouble, my set of a million allen keys has one for the truss and the 1/16th for the saddles but the intonation ones that people on the net are fighting about being a phillips screw are as you know not a screw but another allen head on the HMV bridge on these latest versions. Its meant to be 7/64ths but the one in my set does not quite fit, im hoping its just a cheap key and I have ordered a single 7/64 allen key off ebay hopefully that will fit?! The truss rod on the new US standards and your Deluxe do both share the same posiflex truss rods, non US models dont get them so they might have a different key size. What exactly was with your case candy? I might try and get a set off ebay just for future value. Still not decided what to do with the deluxe case im not going to use, ive left the wrappers on it for now
9. I go parallel most of the time, the Classicray5 hasn't got a switch anyway but the ceramic version in series is a serious tool that you will enjoy a lot! I like my ceramic SR5 in series with a pick, its awesome
10. At £17 from Thomann I cant lose can I, gigging I will use the bigger amp and use the valve channel for the Jazz and the FET for the Ray or double bass, at least at home with the 3.0 I can boost it up a bit, TBH my Fishman Plat Pro I use with the DB would probably do the job too. If I use it all the time I will look out for a better version like a BDDI or something next year
11.
Ah right, in that case I see the problem. I'll shut up. I still say go outboard rather than onboard though. For me this allows for the natural tone of the bass to be blended in, rather than having a full active tone, and you can use it with all basses.
I agree and I'd rather not mess with the bass really, I'm going to order a Behringer bdi 21 today, jusy using the valve preamp channel on my other amp has transformed it already.
12.
Ah shame about the Rotosounds. They're my go to standard strings. I had the exact bass you've got and will get that exact one again. Sunburst/rosewood - perfect.
I haven't used them for years I remember why now, lol. Burst RW and torty is about as classic as is comes isnt it?
13. Behringer bdi 21 are less than £20 at thomann right now, you will need to order yourself a new bass or amp to save the postage fees though
14. Everyone should own one really, felt wrong without a Jazz to hand and I really like this one. The rotosound strings are dead after one gig and they are giving me blisters but I'm trying to get my money out of them even though they were free! What version and colour combo are you thinking?
15. I was waiting for someone else to say get a Gedo first but yes get a Gedo I dont know how good any bass below a few grand will sound really but it sounds like the next logical step and right on budget at £1000-1500 for a half carved bass. If you ever head up towards the midlands gilmour you are welcome to try mine and have a cup of tea
16. Yes please if you can deaver I doubt it will go in our set, but its one of those lines I would like to nail as the record one day, I have got a fairly good approximation going on now, mainly the second half of the main riff that sounds messy, it is also causing me some blisters on my pinky due to these awful Roto strings!
17. I had a metal plate in my left wrist but had it took out to help with the movement last year, it didn't though. Stingray5s for me and my duff wrist work well, come and join the dodgy left wrist and Stingray gang
18.
Since when did this become a cock measuring exercise?! :-p
Ah, If that is what we are on about I will have to go back to my original 3.0 comment then
19.
Isn't Pete comparing the new bass to a Squier though. Unless that had a pre amp in it then it's nothing to do with outboard gear IMO. Both basses should be sound pretty similar unless the pups or wiring is faulty. Not sure what Squier Pete had before, maybe it was a VM with the hot Duncan designed pups in it.
Ha it was Uber pimped Bartolini pickups, EBS active preamp with the jack socket mounted on the body, Badass bridge, full size tuners, rolled fingerboard edges, Fender pickguard. triggers broom you might say
20. OK I am up in my pyjamas feeling like sh*t but I am having a play! I made a little Genz mountain to play with, the valve is key I think, the FET only 3.0 really lacks punch where I love it with a Ray, probably my favourite tone from the three amps when using a Ray. the valve only preamp 6.0 is much better that is when I realised I was onto something, again the FET channel on my 9.2max normally does it for me but not with the Jazz, it sounds LOADS better through the valve channel, really getting somewhere with it now. I had a proper play with every knob in the extremes and the Valve channel is where the Jazz needs to be with both pickups on full, the FET channel is where the Stingrays go, pointing straight up pretty nuetral settings on the Rays and use the treble pot to change from any style of music, I really like Stingrays you know
21. I didn't like the deluxe when shopping last week and bought a standard instead, the active just didnt do it for me and I am an active guy to the core! I think to a large extent its the old try before you buy anything Fender over where it is made a good mex will be better than a bad US, I think buying a 4 string is easier than a 5 though as you dont need to worry about the flappy B, the USA basses have the Posiflex graphite reinforced trussrod on a 5 string I think this could be why the older pre 2012 ones were not so good with a B string? Rolled fingerboard edges, 4 ply pickguard, urethane finish on the body and neck is nice, and on a four string you get Custom Shop pickups (not on a 5 string, just USA Alnicos) High mass vintage bridge with strung through or top load options, string spacing adjustment, Light weight paddle tuners too. Mine only has two pieces to the body not three never mind five. I can't say the USA badge did not draw me in a little but at the same time the US Standard for me is the right blend of everything they offer
22. My credit card really can't take it if there is an option of buying a new Funk5 in sparkle silver but I will give it a try " transaction declined".......
23. I will do some measuring and fiddling tommorow and report back, thanks folks
24. My new week old Fender came strung through and with a HMV bridge, I like it and wont be putting a bbot on it, not sure about these grooved adjustable string spacing saddles but so far so good.
