1. It makes these endorsee whores look like idiots if you ask me, flea did a massive campaign for the Acoustic amps, it was in every magazine going but by the time they went on tour a few months later he was back with GK even though the adverts were still being printed, I'd have stayed with the lakland and I bet he would have too but who is on the board at fender, bonio and his bald hat wearing mate so it's no surprise is it?
2. Build quality and reliability are not the same thing and often at the route of fender debates, fanbois getting shirty because their 70s P bass has never let them down in forty years so it must be well built, no that's reliability it can still have a massive neck pocket allowing lateral movement of the neck, a truss rod that won't allow a very low action, bad fret work from new etc, that is the build quality. Some arm chair internet speculation does go on but the majority of people suggesting try before you buy even on deluxe USA models are mainly just trying to help out fellow bass chatters, often the person suggesting poor build quality has a whole range of fender instruments they love but also know it took a bit of filtering to get there. All is good then after all so no chance of Genz being sold off and put back into production then?! Damn.
3. I really like them other than the anaemic neck colour but even that will tint eventually.
4. Finding places that stock a good range of anything is hard, where's all the G and l stuff for example?
5. They are great basses, the sky line range is equal to anything made in the USA by fender or musicman ime. The 55-94 ones are the nuts.
6. I do like a solid feeling bass, my 2007 SR5 is bit too heavy but is also my best sounding Stingray and can almost do a smooth thump even though it is the only ceramic pickup equipped Stingray I have and they are meant to be grittier, I think maybe it can be but if you back off the treble it smooths out where the Alnico ones dont? The polite DJ5 thing might not be an issue as I would be using a Stingray for anything dirty! I liked the 55-01 but that was a bit polite too but then again it was to be my main bass at the time so I was looking for something else, the 95-14 is in stock at B'ham but in my least favourite finish of the three options or else I reckon I would end up with that!
7. Does anyone know if the Lakland DJ5 comes with a gig bag or case? If anything I would be trying this at the Epsom branch JTUK? http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars_detail.asp?stock=14013016041159
8. I wish this was in stock at my store to try, and the Deluxe version is still pre order only http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars_detail.asp?stock=12031010420658
9. Ah well mine will be the Birmingham one anyway, I cant see it comparing to your Sei basses anyway can you? The lure of the F USA Deluxe badge is tempting me in but I suspect the build and playability of the DJ5 will make the sale!
10. Those contour combos sound really good, I've used one at a jam night and I enjoyed it a lot. The shuttles are closer to the contour sound wise so I can see why you prefer the contour to the streamliner too.
11. Which branches though, which one are you visting? I've found in the past that the stock list is nonsense but that can go either way, although not listed they might have an oly white deluxe with rw board after all.
12. I was going to look at a Jabba when I bought my first SR5 but the heavy snow stopped us getting to bass direct! I still like them.
13.
The 2011 5-string US Standard Fender Jazz Bass in sunburst with rosewood was one of the few basses I've had and sold that I wish I'd kept now. I loved it.
here's hoping I find such a bass, I promise to keep it too
14. This does sound like an earth fault on the house socket, could just be the earth has snapped off the back of the outlet but it needs checking properly as it could be a problem with the incoming supply too, those plug in jobs are ok but as long as there is a tiny earth the earth ok light will illuminate, a sparky shouldn't charge you more than twenty quid to test it with a proper earth fault loop impedance tester and fix the fault if is just broken off somewhere obvious.
15. If I like the stock sound of the deluxe I'll probably buy it if it plays well as that is what I'm after really, guitar guitar have just listed a Sun burst and rosewood deluxe too. I do like an active bass I must admit then again I have a dual channel amp with switchable gain for each preamp so I can dial in a nice passive jazz channel and an active stingray channel for those gigs where I'm taking both, gigs where I'm taking double bass I will only take one electric bass unless it's a really important gig so I will continue with a double bass channel and electric bass channel as I do now, two leads via an ab pedal for the two instruments and toggle between channels using the foot controller or even mix both channels for full on rock out endings!
16. Now the thing is me and a mate have been talking about the deluxe, if it's not so good sounding swapping the pickups and preamp might not be as easy as the standard USA jazz, are the pickups normal sized for example? If I'm buying a jazz should I just get a normal jazz, then if I'm itching for an active I know a John east and either the stock USA pickups or something else will solve that if I find a nice playing standard?
17. It's funny how when you start out most people have a combo and jam with mates, then comes the rehearsal room with the 8x10 and we run them flat out in a small space, then pub gigs come along and the combo goes for a 4x10, that also does the small and medium sized music venues, then when you play a full size big stage you could easily use the combo micd up, put yourself through the monitors from one end of the stage to the other and play at the lowest volume ever yet hear what everyone is doing, once you get bigger than that you get two massive stacks to make the next generation think that is what they will need and at the same time you wear in ears! That said f*** it, buy it
18. Will anything other than four string fender basses and normal guitars be collectable in the long term anyway? In another fifty years will anyone be playing these instruments? Even the oldest P bass is fairly modern in real terms, are we caught in a moment of typical rock and roll bands, a death doom fudge glimmer lounge core band is still more closely set up like a 60s rock and roll band than it is an orchestra. Collectors that can't play a note do and will buy vintage fenders but I can't see anyone caring so much for a Wal unless it's to a bass player, move on forty years from now and I can see most basses other than fender and Gibson starting to lose value. I'm sure there well be a generation of bassists around then but there will be a lot of used basses, supply and demand controls prices so from millions of Yamaha basses no one has a clue as to which is cheap and which is an expensive one and a dwindling market for them for example against a 1951 P Bass in a glass display case, I know where my investment would go even though I'd rather gig a five string Nathan east for the rest of my days than the P bass.
19. It could have been worse if you'd bought one of those kiss basses then! Lob.
20. I'm not a fan of natural basses really, rosewood would be nice for a change but I'm more negotiable on that of it looks good with the body finish.
21. The smoking ban was the final straw imo coupled to a lack of current guitar based bands at the same time, my band at the time went from busy pubs once a month at least with a function gig here and there to all function gigs with the odd empty pub. At the same time we went from learning a song a week to a song a month because there was nothing in the charts that 'needed to be learnt' as there had been for years before like kaiser cheifs, killers, pigeon detectives, kings of leon, etc etc. Most of my pub band gigs now are just the same as the typical function band stuff covering loads of genres which is ok and a reason to buy a new bass! Certainly though the smoking ban started the rot imo. I also think social media has made us all less sociable, when I was 18 you had to go to the in pub to meet friends and you knew which pubs they would be in so there was no need for texting etc.
22. Haha you know its an updated better version of a P bass Jose all day long
23.
3-tone sunburst really works for Fender, though. It's not really my cuppatea, but people do like it. That's why they produce so many sunburst instruments - it's a safe bet. But this is what I'm saying - if they reduced the range, then every so often ran a "special" colour, people would buy it. I'm pretty sure colour/appearance is quite a deciding factor for most people.
This is how Musicman do it, collectors buy everything in a special finish, I dont go on the MM forum but I understand some people have dozens of the same model, then regular people like most of us also might fall for a 'Dargie Delight' or 'Sledge' which makes a sale. The colours are changed but the whole range gets the new finish which I presume keeps costs down. At the same time they have a totally confusing range like Fender now! I might still buy a Fender on saturday though
