1.
My best advice I have for anybody is this - Most musicians are self serving ass hats. Beware who you befriend.
Current bands are ok previous ones this ^^^^, when current ones become previous ones rinse and repeat
 2. I've got weichs and as a beginner I dont find them that 'weich' I'm sure they will do the job
 3. I've got a Yita, its nice but it does have a leather grip, mother of pearl inlay. No idea what the hair is made of?
 4.
Once upon a time you had a choice of Jazz or Precision. Now there are simply too many different options. Just looking at US-made basses there are a bewildering array of "base" models, vintage models, and complete over-saturation of signature models (who are all these people?!). Then multiply that by MIM/CIJ/MIJ/Squier. The result is that it would take weeks of research to decide which particular model you think you want - and then have no hope of finding an example of that particular one in any physical music shops. IMHO though, the worst shot in the foot are the excellent quality basses coming out of Squier at the moment. Why would you pay Fender US prices that approach the cost of a custom build, when Squier do very similar basses, of very giggable quality for a tiny fraction of the price?!
This is spot on imo, I'm not looking at the specific models much because I want to try before I buy so it will be dependant on a few shop's stock, at the same time top of my list is a Deluxe USA Jazz V £1550 ish but I'd have no problem in walking out with a Squier version if I felt it was really good, and people say they are.
 5.
I know. Wish I'd bought it - second time I've played something, put it back whilst wondering whether I should or shouldn't only for somebody to pick it up straight after I've put it back and then take it straight to the till! :-/
Its like those people who watch people play the gambler in the pub and only play after enough people have fed it for them!
 6.
Shoulda bought that Ibanez too... :-/
Life's to short, from now on if I like it I'm buying
 7.
I know we both are GAS-ing for Laklands so Darryl Jones it is. I'm quite set myself now to get a DJ5 in white and maple when the stock arrives.
I fell on love with a DJ5 EBS freak was selling but I didnt play fives at the time, what a dufus I am!
 8.
It's ok, the 5502 does NOT sound like a Stingray, I guarantee you But the Squier DeLuxe is a very interesting animal. A good project bass. It's decent stock, but you'd probably find the preamp lacking a bit and the pickups a bit polite.
That's not in the spirit of basschat, you are meant to say you had a custom built Stingray made by Leo himself after returning him from the grave specially for the job, then you bought a 55 02 and its more Stingray than the Stingray so you sold the Stingray, a few months later you start a Stingray gas thread
 9.
I've just put some new Innovation strings on mine, and the coloured cloth bits at the top come all the way past the nut! The E string is particularly long, the green bits goes all the way to where I would fret for F... I think it still plays ok, but is there anything I should do about it?
I did the same £145 on a set of strings, messed the silks up trying them, I was very very grumpy! Took the anchor block off, drilled the holes out deeper leaving about 10mm of wood left from the string ball, unwound a tiny bit of silk from the E string peg end then used a clear nail varnish to tidy up the silks beyond the nut. Sorted
 10. I'm hoping a week on saturday, got a gig that night too! Work keeps getting in the way, just got in now, working this weekend too You need to stop me buying a Stingray this time, you have failed the last two times
 11.
Nice - but I've got a real hankering for a maple neck with black block inlays. Olympic White is still in the frame but now I've seen the picture of that red Sei at the Bass Gallery, I'm leaning more towards the red. That Sei would be perfect if it had a maple neck with the blocks.... Problem is, there aren't any off-the-shelf basses that exactly match what I want (the Squier is the closest). I could get one made but I'm not sure I could justify two and a half thou for an Overwater - or a similar kind of price for a Sei. Realistically, my budget is probably the same as StingrayPete's - a max of £1600. I'll try and get my hands on a Squier to try and see what that's like - I know the 4-string VM's get a lot of respect on here. If I get on with it, that might keep the GAS at bay while I keep my eyes open for the perfect Candy Apple/Maple/Blocks combo in the marketplace....
I shall report back after any shopping trips with findings, feel free to let me know what you try and where too
 12.
I've had both of these... American Deluxe Jazz Bass V - http://www.fender.co...-bwb-pickguard/ American Standard Jazz Bass V - http://www.fender.co...color-sunburst/ Moved them both on - this is so subjective of course. Personally, I liked the Standard a lot more than the Deluxe and, actually, it's one of the few basses I wish I hadn't sold. I'd go out and try as many as possible mate... you've got me thinking now though - I want another Jazz V. And I'm 100% sure that there are far superior Jazz Basses out there but personally speaking, and I know I'm very blinkered here, I love and want the Fender decal on the headstuck.
This is what worries me about Fender, if I find one I like I'll keep it forever!
 13.
I went through this last week and actually gave up looking for a 5 string Jazz. Nothing really rocked my boat, so i got a cheap(er)Yamaha for now. I have a VM PJ and as nice as it is ive never really loved it. Maybe its the cheap wood or the rough edges on the sides of the neck. Compared to my CV's it seems a bit lower down the scale. This was the reason i didnt go tor the VM jazz V. Another one i looked at was the Fender Modern Player Jazz 5. This seemed like a really good choice but the one i picked up (and this was just a 4 string) was very heavy. As my budget was quite low, and i really wanted a passive bass, i decided to just get a Yamaha 5 string (completely the opposite of what i was looking for) and wait until i see if i get on with the extra string (again), then probably get a Fender MIA jazz 5 next year. I did have a Lakland DJ5 a few years ago. Lovely bass but i never really liked the tone. It was warmer and deeper than the 4 string Jazz basses i had at the time. I wish i still had it though :-) EDIT: I realise the above doesn't make sense. The idea was to get the Yamaha now and leave a gap for the perfect 5 string jazz, rather than getting something that will do the job but i would want to replace. The Yamaha sits in its own space in the collection.
I suppose as long as I come home with something it's a successful shopping trip
 14.
Lakland - not a Fender......better than a Fender. Go Darryl Jones.
Best not go there again, I'm now blocked by two people afaik The F badge appeals but it needs to be good, I've played some crap Fenders but not one bad Lakland.
 15. 55 02 is still an option Jose but I really want something that isnt a Stingray with a J pickup, I need to break my habit
 16.
DEAL http://www.thebassgallery.com/product_details.cfm?ID=2932&type=Bass Guitar
My last jazz was CAR, I Was never that keen, I don't like gold hardware or pearloid either, other than that it's perfect, lol Interesting what you say about the USA deluxe though do I'm still up for that I think. Xotic are really good to play and the finish is excellent, bit over budget though I guess, saying that it's only money isn't it
 17.
Where are you based? You're welcome to give my Jazz V a blast, as I think the B is awesome on it...
Thanks for the offer but I'm miles away near Stafford M6 junction 14
 18. The Sandberg does look like an obvious choice doesn't it but I'm not sure.
 19. I've started a jazz V thread to save derailing this one, I'm not sure me buying one USA deluxe is going to help with the 250 million debt but you know, watch the Pennies and all that!
 20. Thats at the top end of my flahyness but actually I do like that, thanks I shall look at more of his basses, I wrongly presumed them to be mainly 8 string single cuts tbh.
 21.
I wasn't digging, Pete.... Just amusing myself with 'Previous'....lol...
No probs, I just wanted to make it clear, it really was a car crash but maybe he didn't put the time in or doesn't have the time I dont know.
 22. Like most stories there was another side, but thats not my story or place to tell it
