1. this is exactly what i'm after, (un)fortunately i dont have the cash right now but GLWTS
2.
Thanks for your comment! More here, let's see if you also like it...This our gig opening song, "Siren"
spot on, 3 quality tracks, kind of band i'd love to play for
3. we've just change one of ours and gone up a step so the singer isn't straining so high (sounds weird writing it down but it works) basically what ever is needed to get it to sound good is done, if it really doesn't fit then it gets chucked out. I'm of the opinion that if you aren't willing to be a bit flexible then being in a band is going to be a struggle
4.
Not really my cup of tea, that one. If I may be so bold as to embed one of my favourite covers of this song, here it is. Very jazzy, and it builds the atmosphere to bonkers-point several times. There's a bit of vocal chorus around 3:45 "I look at all the funky people" - brilliant!
hmm that just makes me think of the music from charlie brown, though i agree the wooten one is wrong, if you just take the bass part, it is really nice but as part of the actual cover, er no.
5. cover only for me, but gigs arent as often as i would like. dont really have the skills to write my own stuff. our guitarist does have some parts written but we never get round to doing anything with it.
6. nice thanks, i suck at slap
7. agree with the drummer comment Hobbayne, i generally learn note for note then adjust to suit if something changes elsewhere. Apart from the singer i seem to be the only one to properly learn the song. Some song we might funk it up or rock it up a bit but there are ones that you just don't/can't change.
8. Martin Mendez - Opeth, solid, awesome tone, never over plays and plays whats needed, latest album just grooves
9. free bump awesome bass this, i used to have the 2band version, same bridge neck etc, had it in 94 bought for about 850 so 950 for this 3band modded version is very reasonable. if i had the cash i'd bite your arm off
10. I had a beauty of a Musicman 2band stingray, blonde natural body and neck, awesome punchy stingray sound, but a wife and a baby and no money ment it had to go (for an obscenely low price too i might add) Am i happy with my current SR500, i should be i've had it a number of years, i would like to change it for the SR505 but it does everything i really need. The snob in me would like a spector or a Zon but fortunately i cant afford them. Am i happy, no i wouldnt say i am, but i am content with what i have.
11. played a 40th birthday on saturday night. went really really well (for a change, people up dancing, good reception to most of our set list and got another booking out of it, had a comment from the dj thatthe sound of our band a effin awesome which is always nice to hear. Also had three ladies join us for mustang sally, must be something going round.
12. i generally dont move much, dont make eye contact if i can help it, i'm not allowed to sing, definately moody i also tendto be the only one that learns their parts when we agreed to be ready. wish i did move about or had the confidence too but the mrs tells me not to dance when i start
13.
Damp squib in Leeds getting damper - so we we unleashed our secret weapon halfway through the 2nd set. Mustang Sally - the tune so collectively hated by us snobby musicians. 3 lookers straight up on stage to be backing singers ......... morphed the ending into Lulu's 'Shout'................... place went mental. Back into our regular rocking set with our newly found audience still going nuts all the way to the end and screaming for more. Lesson to be learned , folks.
lesson indeed, we have a couple of song that we collectively/individually hate but the punters like em so we play em. funnily enough we have just reinstated mustang sally back into our set. not been on here for yonks, but did have a gig at a pub we've played a few times so expected a good night, though seems everyone round there was skint and by the time we finished the first set there were 4 people in the bar!! and not due to our playing. went fairly well but just saw it as a paid practice. Got a 40th birthday this saturday which could be interesting, hopefully we may actually get some dancing going on (not us the audience)
14. really depends how big the venue you are playing at is, but like foxen said use your ears to hear what your amp is doing and adjust it accordingly.
15. recently changed to a 4x10 from a 2x10, same brand, difference is pretty clear, 4x10 is much more punchy and has more depth, the 2x10 was clearer adn more attacky and also benifited from being able to stand them vertically so better projection (imo) though were i to add another 4x10 on top i would probably get the high end stuff out again due to the lack of floor coupling of the top cab. stick a cab on the floor the sound will be deeper, stick it on a beer crate and it will get more middy so its not just the cab that makes the difference but the surroundings its used in. have used 15's and didnt like them on their own but i may like them in a stack. unfortunately there is no definitive answer to this which seems to be what you are after, like the others said trust your ears.
16.
Anyone know £?
always loved ashdown but this is awsome, wanted so tube stuff for ages but i dont think i want to know how much it costs
17.
Any thoughts on the Ashdown MAGc115 300w???? They are more readily available than the GK I was looking at and they are extendable. Good reviews too! Thanks, Mark
i love the mag range, had the 210 combo and now have the evo3 head and a 4x10. i have also tried the 115 combo, very loud adn pretty small too but its not the lightest thing out there, but i beleive you do have the option to add an extension cab if you wish. you can get a nice variety of sounds out of it too. i certainly prefered it to the GK stuff that i tried, well except their more expensive items, the combos just seemed a bit harsh.
18.
Christ, this would put anyone off buying an Ibanez....
and if it makes you that happy too, wow. though it does look the nuts, he just looks bored outta his mind and it seems hes deaf to the treble though if the sr500 is anything to go by that should be one awesome bass
19.
As they've phoned me this morning to confirm I can collect tomorrow, I've actually asked who's got the No.1 and I was told he is the same person who ordered mine, Number One had a red chassis and Number Two (mine) had the black chassis and both were made for him, but in the end he chose the red one, I know who he is but I am going to let you guess with a few hints below: Hint no.1 - He plays for a very famous Irish band Hint no.2 - The singer in this band thinks he's God Hint no.3 - The guitarist in their band has a strange name Hint no.4 - Their most famous hit song has a high Irish political content Can you guess who it is yet?
hmm, mr clayton perchance?
20.
congrats - my absolute 100% top GAS bass is the Zon Sonus graphite neck PJ config "Billy Gould" special . Great thing about that bass is I'll never afford it; problem with your really beautiful bass is that I think I might just be able to afford it . Thank god Harrogate is miles and miles away. Enjoy your special bass, mate.
been gassing for a sonus since i saw billy playing them way back, but like you say fortunately well out of my price range. but that is one very sweet bass sir, soo jealous.
21. you could see that coming from the first post lol, nice though and the 7 day return is a good touch
22. been doing this recently myself, figured the gain would do the same as the active pad anyway, and you have control over it rather than having to drive the gain higher fo the same volume. glad i'm not doing anything thats likely to cause problems, i know my passive bass seems to have very hot pickups.
23.
I always thought they were called the "MAG" range because the "ABM" ones were known as bass MAGNIFIERS. Probably me being dense mind! ;-) Ta to everyone for the info and anecdotes! Always appreciated!
had a mag 300 210 combo for a few years, never a single problem with it, gigged etc, even had some fogger fluid poured nto the back of it (dont ask) and it still kept going strong till i had to sell it, now have picked up a newer mag 300 head and 410 cab. compressor is pretty good, you dont need much of it mind as its quite punchy but suits my needs. the newer heads "seem" to have more cut on the active input than on the previous version as i have to turn the gain higher than i remember. but its purely based on memory. As for reliability, when i was researching mine (the 210 combo so at least 3 years ago) there was alot of stories flying about, these were from the previous batches to the one i got and since there seems to have been alot less issues (think this i due to them changing quality control processes, supplies etc) so the evo2's should be fine.
24.
+1 to what doddy says but here is my crappy advice for scales on the bass! I would start with the major scale, you must know it, the modal scales are made from it and its a reference point. from a playing point of view the pentatonic major (playing over major chords) and minor scale (minor chords) are the most usual for fills and twiddly bits after that mixolydian and dorian I have prob cofused the hell out of you........ but heres a secret of learning the scales and modes on a bass 1. Learn the C major scale on the 8th fret 2. all the modal scales dorian, phygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolin, locrian modes are made from the same notes i.e c d e f g a b c just in a different order. 3. the next mode to learn is dorian which begins with D on the 10th fret. 4. then Phygian E you can play it on the 12 th or the open strings. 5. next lydian mode begins with F on 1st fret or 13th fret 4 mixolydian 3rd fret on G 5 Aeolian mode or natural minor on the 5th begins with A 6 locrian mode B on the 7th 7. then back to C SEE HOW THEY ALL FIT TOGETHER ONE FOLLOWS THE OTHER These are interesting as they will help you to learn the fret board The most common scales however that I use and for that matter most bass dudes are Pentatonic major (its your c major scale above but only using note 1 2 3 5 6 of the scale) you can move it up and down the neck the first note is the root, `i use this for fills and twiddly bits over major chords Pentatonic minor (its like the A aeolian scale above but only using the 1 3 4 5 7 and the octave this is used for twiddlys over minor, minor 7th chords. Dorian mode this is the D scale above use this over minor chords and minor 7th chords a more rocky sound mixolydian the G scale mentioned above, i play over dominant 7th chords the above represents my playing style there are many possibilities, of using certain scales over certain chords to make your groove. for example chris squire often uses the lydian mode over major chords for fills etc creates a bright melodic sound. Thats not me I am more forceful! play with it at rehearsals. Learn the chords of your songs "the changes" cheers D PStwo scales i fogot that are important, which i dont use are the blues scale like the A aeolian mode i meantioned above but with a b5 and b7 added notes. and the mixo blues scale with is the combined notes of the blues scale and the mixolydian You are probably very confused, but the most useful book you can ever get is HAL LEONARD "bass scales finder" get it if they still print it, all will become clear
cant add much except that book is really the place to start, which reminds me i should really start, daunting book as there are over 1000 scales but should cover everything.
25.
The new 2010 model looks like my kind of thing:
they look sweet, kinda like a primus bass
