  1. I was "recruited" for a band formed by a girl I met briefly at uni. The band didn't last long (and wasn't great in any case) but we're still together three years later
  2. Most 6 string sets would have something in the region of .030 as the C, so I would go with the .032. The .040 might work but I wouldn't feel comfortable taking it up to Bb.
  3. If you have a combo already, why not try it with that first? It might sound great. It might not, but you'll be able to narrow down what you want a bit more. Otherwise you're kinda flailing in a sea of different options with insufficient data to make an informed choice.
  4. +1 for pics. Also, does the truss rod work, and where abouts in the world are you?
  5. Are these new models? The older ones have been available for a few years now. Anyway, it looks like [url="http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/MTD.html"]Bass Direct[/url] are stockists.
  6. Getting the tuning on a four isn't a problem- might need a truss rod tweak and intonation adjustment, but that's not a big job. What is a problem is trying to use the same strings to tune up to standard- you would either have too much tension on the neck from the larger strings for tuning down, or standard strings which would be totally floppy if you tune them down to drop B. Just to clarify, by drop B do you mean BF#BE?
  7. I think the thing in the F-hole is a humidifier, to stop it drying out and cracking.
  8. Why not file the relevant slot on your current nut? If that doesn't solve it you could then look at replacing it.
  9. Is your action very low?
  10. They pop up pretty frequently on the TalkBass classifieds.
  11. Sounds like lift music to me. I think this is one of those genres that you probably have to see in person to 'get'. As ever though, YMMV.
  12. I've not listened to a lot of Janek's work (mainly Youtube stuff) so correct me if I'm wrong, but is his scatting (is that a word? It is now) not part of his soloing process, and not really meant as part of the performance per se? Can you hear it on record when there's not a camera mic pointed at him? I've tried it once or twice and it does genuinely make me sound a bit more melodic (not that that's difficult ) because your brain dictates the notes not your fingers. I'm too self conscious to do it in public though, as well as too rubbish at jazz.
  13. [quote name='mcgraham' post='888820' date='Jul 7 2010, 06:54 PM']I'd be interested to hear that. I've often wondered about virtuoso instrumentalists whether they can apply their instrumental dedication to singing as another discipline.[/quote] The only one that springs to mind for me is Billy Sheehan (although maybe "virtuoso" is pushing it a bit)- he sang on 'Cosmic Troubadour'. Let's just say I'd rather listen to his bass playing...
  14. Or price!
  15. I always quite fancied a Zephyr 6 actually...
  16. They're nice, but ridiculously overpriced in this country compared to how they're priced in the US- even more so than usual.
  17. I will when I can afford it, since I tried to tweak mine on the fly and made a bit of a mess of it!
  18. I guess he's thinking because the 4th of C major is an F natural, which could clash with the F# of the key signature. If he's playing a Cmaj7 chord that's not the case though. I can't see it making a big difference to the tonality just tell him its a passing note if he tries to argue. Remember, theory is descriptive, not prescriptive. Its a way of describing what you're doing, not restricting what you can do. Ultimately, if it sounds good, it is good!
  19. Not as easy to tweak a DB's string height on the fly...
  20. The short answer is yes, it can be done. If everything sends and receives MIDI messages you can set them up so they respond to the correct signal. You can also get devices like the Switchblade which are basically MIDI controlled patchbays, which allow you to connect non MIDI capable gear in whatever order (although obviously you wouldn't be able to change parameters on the individual pedals this way).
  21. Lots of great stuff indeed. A lot of hours have gone into each of those!
  22. +1! I turned them off completely, but it would be nice not to have to. Maybe removing IMG tags from sigs would help? Or there's a feature I've seen elsewhere where each user's signature is only shown once per page.
  23. [quote name='JTUK' post='881055' date='Jun 29 2010, 03:34 PM']Keep the cabs and get a car. All this schepping around without your own transport is nuts. I wouldn't compromise a cab just for size if it didn't do the job I wanted it to.[/quote] That's just not feasible for some people, I'm afraid. Sometimes a compromise is necessary
  24. And they have a lovely slick feel!
