Anyone thinking of buying from Rondomusic.com?
velvetkevorkian replied to derrenleepoole's topic in General Discussion
It's OK. We hear a lot about guitarists playing bass like a big guitar; I play guitar like a little bass -
I was considering buying one of their 8 strings when I had money, and after talking to some brits on youtube that have actually bought from there, they have all been okay. Next time I have money to waste I'm definitely buying one.
Om nom nom nom. -

I'd love to (I really want one of the 8 string guitars they do!) but the lack of warranty for sales outside North America puts me right off, unfortunately. -
Love the scratchplate!

I'd just trawl the classifieds until you see something you fancy!

72 Precision or Alleva-Coppolo Willie Weeks

It's a false dichotomy. Man up and keep both -
I may be wrong but based on the graphite necked basses that I've owned, I wouldn't describe them as being light.
Speculating somewhat, but maybe this is down to mass; i.e. to make a recognisable neck shape requires quite a large mass of solid material, whereas on a cab you could use much thinner sheets (rather than 3/4" plywood or whatever) because graphite/composites are much stiffer per unit of mass. I'm prepared to be shot down in flames though.

Were Some Decades Better For One Instrument Than Another?
velvetkevorkian replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
[snip] bass was doing quite well with the likes of Mark King, Mick Karn, Pino et al. [snip]
I think you'll find your (or more to the point, my) mileage may vary on this point... Anyway, I think the answer by and large is no, not really, although you may have a different opinion if you're a fan of chorused bass and drums covered with gated reverb. -
Here is a long read about it, here is a slightly shorter thread by the same guy and here is a somewhat shorter one. You probably want to get a cuppa before trawling through the first two Keep us posted with how you get on; seems like a win/win if you discount cost...

There's a couple of people on TalkBass who DIY'ed composite cabs- not carbon fibre but some kind of fibreglass IIRC. By all accounts it worked very well, but as BFM says the time and effort compared to a traditional wooden build is much greater.

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
velvetkevorkian replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
Looks very stylish, like a super expensive Italian kitchen. You just need to black out the colour logos on the M9 -
Now you can form an awesome death metal band
-
Are they not made from Formica or something similar (like a kitchen worktop)? Or did I imagine that?

Well, inspired by this thread, I've just built one by cutting up a cheap CD case and taping it to my pickups. I like it, although I think I'm not really getting full benefit without it being radiused to match the strings- on the G string it's very noticeable (especially when using fingers and thumb, Garrison style), less so on the other strings and when playing normally. I can see a properly built one being an asset

If they made a 5 string Beast I would be all over that (although it looks like they don't do a Beast bass any more, going by that list). None of the other shapes do anything for me. edited to add pic. -
Bass Day UK 2010, Who is going?

Give out Uzis at the door? -
About £1k for my bass guitars only; about £3k including the upright.
Tell you what I'm tired with is a lot of the contributions to this thread recently. BGM is a mag that has to cater for a wide range of players and genres. You can't please all of the people all of the time, as someone once said. If you are that unhappy with it do as some have done and go else where and stop whinging. I think they do a pretty good job. I don't read it from cover to cover but I can usually find enough to satisfy me. There have been a lot of complaints about type setting and typos in the mag. Well quite frankly some of the contributers to this thread should check their own posts first before they criticise others. Rant over.
To be honest, the content is fine with me for the most part- as you say, they can't please everyone all the time- but some of the issues are basic competencies for publishing a magazine, I would have thought.
Anyone got the brand new one in the last day or so? Mark @ BassDirect, Robbie @ RIM and Bernie @ GB have all told me the review of the TC BG500 amp I won is n there and I went to my usual place to buy a copy to be told they aren't stocking it anymore! Nottingham seems to be BGM void :-(
Yep, you get a whole page to yourself.
It completely unfair, and I don't really know why it should be, but I hate looking at that kid's face He has nothing interesting to say really either, it's more of an advert. And I hate the format of the short interviews at the front. It's a load of bass players in bands I've never heard of telling me what gear they use, their influences and what they think the "secret" of good bass playing is. Why do I give a sh*t about any of that? "The secret of a good bass is to stick wiv da drums", "The secret of a good bass is to always do what the song needs", "The secret of a good bass is to play simply and don't be a cheeky monkey." What a load of sh*t. I just got the one with Bootsy on the cover. And I'm bored with it already. I thought they were really getting somewhere but it seems to be going downhill again. I haven't seen any acknowledgement and addressal of the missing end of last month's RHT/WB/NM interview either. Standards and content quality are slipping again I think.
Er, what he said, face and all. I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription when it ends (which was a gift in the first place).

Yet more typesetting problems in this months issue. The sentence at the end of each page of the Stanley Clarke interview is not the same as the first sentence on the next page. Also, writers who don't understand the difference between a cross rhythm and a polyrhythm
I think I mostly like jazz. I don't like the '80s stuff where it was all synths and electric guitars and knitting machine sweaters with Kandinsky / Cosby Show patterns on, that sounds sh*te, but when it's a bunch of Black Panther look-a-likes flying through a dozen chord changes a bar it's just plain exciting to listen to. That's all there is to "get" about it, to me.
That's about as good a summary as I've heard. I like having that "How'd he do that?!?!" moment when listening to music and jazz is good for that.
Dont feel you *have to* or *should* like jazz to be a better musician, its just a genre. The people that are really *into* it (myself included) would encourage you to delve deeper, because it can be very rewarding to listen to and play, but then again if you start a discussion showing a vague interest in hyper-speed-death-thrash-black-metal then I'm sure someone will be deeply into it and encourage you to pick out the melodies and harmonies amongst the seemingly random mess of notes (as it appears to this 'outsider')
Absolutely! Melodic death-black-thrash-hyper-speed-core metal FTW.
I'm not one for P-type basses really, but that one has stopped me in my tracks. Everything about it is just absolutely right, and to be honest I think it sets a whole new standard. I really think it looks that good. OK, opinion of P basses duly amended.
+1: I'd hit that. I particularly like how they've made the two pickup coils symmetrical rather than the daft looking 3+2 arrangement on Fender P5s.
