Now I find ( picking up my strat - after so many years away from 6 string ) that the strat actually sounds better going through the Ampeg than my Blues Junior ! ( with some adjustment to the eq )

I'm more offended by their homogenised, twee pop-reggae tbh. How about Tim Westwood? More Ali-G than Ali-G....

He probably absorbed it from the multi cultural hotspot he grew up in. He played with black musicians for years. Like my accent it probably comes and goes depending who he is with and what he is doing. I don’t think he’s putting it on

Check Nathan Watts as he was the official bass player for Stevie Wonder in 2005 (between two diets, he could have looked that way). 😉

I think I have only ever seen one picture of RFW and that is the one in the Shadows of Motown book. Could be...

It's George Duke on keyboards, and the bassist plays a Marcus Miller Fender signature bass, so maybe Freddy Washington is right.

Got to say I’m hugely impressed with Heistercamp. The quality of their goods and customer service is second to none. After losing well over 2 stone recently, and having no holes left on my tatty belt, it was a no brainer to get a handmade Heistercamp one. This is their ‘Classic Leather Belt’ with antique silver buckle. Black with red stitching to match the strap. Seems really top quality. The sizing guide on their site is spot on, and they come with 7 holes, more than on some belts. As with the strap, it came wrapped in tissue paper with a nice handwritten note, in a quality box. Here it is alongside the strap. Reasonably priced at £40.50 including next day postage (which cost them around £6-£7 to send). This includes an extra £1.50 to go from the standard 1” thickness to 1.25”, and an extra £1 for stitching. I think this is very fair considering the last 2 Hugo Boss leather belts I bought were £45 each, both wore out all round rather quickly, looking especially tatty around the holes, and peeling apart due to the lack of stitching. Another nice touch is the logo stamp on the underside of the buckle. Also the buckle is a good size with smooth round edges, my pet hate with belts is a big chunky buckle that digs into my stomach and feels sharp on the edges & corners. I’ve had Boss ones where the buckle felt fine at the time, then became painfully sharp as the coating wore away. I have no affiliation with Heistercamp but can’t recommend them highly enough for straps and belts. Also I’m loving the strap - the extra width & padding (combined with the weight loss) has resulted in significantly less neck / shoulder / back pain compared to a few months ago. The smooth leather backing is really nice too. This was a bit of a gamble as I’m used to suede backing, but the leather is so good. It’s not slippy, the bass stays in place, but if I need to move it a little, it moves easily without grabbing on my T-shirt like suede did. Great stuff!

He is helpfully stood right behind Stevie so we see him a lot but I don't recognise him.

I need the knowledge of the hive mind. I have been asked for a Stevie Wonder/Aretha Franklin transcription from a YouTube video but I don't know who the player is. First thoughts are Freddy Washington but I am not at all sure. Can anyone help identify the guy? Sounds like Jameson but not. https://youtu.be/pTnCHP-9Wdo?feature=shared

Cultural appropriation and covers

Nobody is saying anything should be crushed, destroyed or banned, the thread is literally a question of "I am unsure if I want to do this thing, would you?". Personally I would choose not to, we all have that choice. -
The endlessly offended need to do some careful thinking. There are a million books some may deem offensive, do they all need to be burnt? And lets not even get started on painterly art and, hard sculpture dripping with the "exploited nude female". Three pages in and no-one has said these words...."Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". 10cc wrote a fantastic little tune and figured in all innocense it would make sense to try and make it sound black, makes perfect sense to me. How about UB40? I dont know if Ali's voice is naturally black sounding or he's putting it on.....but it certainly sounds appropriate and the band and entourage was full of black comrades and great friends. Be careful what you wish for cause if we carry on down this path, all art and expression which is wrongly deemed to be be-litteling someone will eventually be crushed. Then what?

I have a few separate groups of friends, most of which are music related but one of which none of them have any interest in music at all, other than listening to it.

No, you said they have to be completely deaf. Wonder if @Dood thinks he's deaf?

So far I'm really liking it: 11kg is light enough to pick up with one hand, relatively small - but still has a decent visual impact , feels like good build quality, it sounds good and seems to go loud enough - I've only done one full-band rehearsal with it though , two gigs coming up at the weekend and one is outside playing some Reggae so that'll be a good test. I'm all about making gigging/rehearsal life as easy as possible nowadays and it is great for that. I've got just one Bass and that is a 3.4kg headless that rarely needs tuning and fits in a guitar bag, a single small Multi-FX unit that I barely touch other than selecting 'clean', dub' or 'dirt' presets, relatively small/light Ashdown RM500 EVO II amp (although that is the next thing I might downsize to something like a TE Elf), and now this Markbass cab means I can carry everything from the car in one go (and it all fits in the back of a small hatchback). Keeping all of my pedal and amp settings the same as my old Tecamp 2x12 (600w) the Markbass sounded a bit more responsive/punchy, a bit cleaner/more hi-fi but a bit less of the 'weighty' sound low-end rumble and trouser-flapping air movement. But that was without cutting the Markbass tweeter or making any Amp/pedal EQ adjustments, I expect with a bit of bass boosting and treble cutting it could sound close enough....although I suppose it would be a lot to ask a 2x10 400w Cab that goes down to 40Hz to have the same low-end air moving and ground-shaking quality of a 600w 2x12 that goes to 36Hz (but the Tecamp did weigh nearly double and was considerably bigger), that Tecamp could really do that Jurassic Park shake the liquid in your glass thing, not sure the Markbass can to the same extent. There is always the option to add another Cab (I was thinking perhaps a 1x15) if that low end is needed - but I think it'd be overkill for my average pub gig.
