They all sound great, I think the bass sound on Mean Mr Mustard is probably where I’d like it to be

I've only seen 3 basses for sale second hand in the 20+ years I've been playing them. One was the 4-string fretless that Happy Jack bought off me, One was a 5-string fretted in flip purple that I bought and had refinished in CAR when it was refurbished by Gus. The other was a 4-string fretted in cream with a carbon fibre scratch plate that believe was owned by @6feet7 for a while?

It would be for this 80's sound definitely - I play mainly folk rock, and I switch between my upright bass and the Ibanez, so the woodier faster decay on the notes fits better with the higher action and keeps it in line with the upright tones.

Oops you’re quite right; it’s a Skyline 55-60. Looked exactly like a DJ5! 🙄 Anyway it’s here just in case
-
I just had a look for this and I couldn't see it unfortunately, thanks though.

Tame the mwah? That’s interesting. I always thought that the accepted wisdom was “the mwah the merrier”.

Distortion/overdrive is a very personal thing and there's so many different flavours - are there any particular players or songs you like the sound of?

While I am on the subject, did you know that Nick Beggs is 62.. he's older than.... me
-
Thanks for this recommendation - just listening to the album, amazing. I have an Ibanez SRH-500F fretless, which has slightly raised action to tame the mwah, and it's a bit woody, so might look at getting a pedal to get near this tone.

Just to tidy things up, I present the complete Nick Beggs bass part from the final tune from 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' from Steven Wilson. Great one for counting long passages with no bass and then changing time signatures inc. a long stretch in 7:8 with some challenging passages. It's a stunning record. You can hear the Chris Squire influence in the Beggs sound. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/the-watchmaker-steven-wilson/

Yeah I’ve been looking at different pedals I’ve seen a deluxe big muff second hand pretty cheap so gonna try that out and see how it goes. My rebop has the adjustable tone pump so I’ve already tried adjusting it up and down to no avail. I’ve just bought a euro 4lx as well which I’ve not tried through my pedals yet but I’m guessing it’s going to be a similar issue. Happy to hear any suggestions for pedals to try
