  2. Agreed that the Rumble range’s good reputation is based on the current versions, the older ones are not generally as well thought of. A 100 (or even the 40) is more than enough for home use.

    Bass Compression

This is exactly correct. envelope following effects before the comp, the rest after. My signal chain is bass>gate>comp>tuner>dirt/pre>amp as I don't use reverb/chorus/delay effects.
  5. I've been told a former employee that he did a LOT of work for the Harrisons.
  6. Also consider this. I know I'm going against the general "keep it" grain here but a bass like that should be in the hands of someone who will use it. There'll be no shortage of takers and you'll forget about it quicker than you think. From an investment point of view it's already worth more than you paid for it so...
  7. OK, here’s my six penny worth…. I have a couple of the V3 Rumble combos, a 100 and a 500. I use the smaller one for gigs with my duo and the larger one for loud duo gigs and also depping with other bands etc. Both are great sounding bits of kit, and have the magic ‘vintage’ preset which gives a very usable classic ‘rock’ tone, with all the tone controls set on roughly 12 o clock. ( I sometimes use the smaller one with a Fender Kingman acoustic electric and it works well too, mainly in smaller gigs like cafes etc. ) Both combos are also lightweight, the 100 astonishingly so! This is getting more important for me these days, as I do maybe 150 gigs a year and am in my late 60’s. These amps, along with my Barefaced cab, have enabled me to carry on gigging with no problems. I haven’t had any reliability problems with either, although these have been some of the first amps I’ve had where I know that they may prove difficult to fix should anything go wrong - hard for me to get my head around, but sadly becoming more of a modern dilemma. Didn’t stop me from buying them though, and so far hasn’t been a problem. Possibly the only minus point is the DI, which on all the combos (other than the 800 I believe) are post eq/ volume. This means any change of volume onstage does affect the out front level too, which can be a pain. ( Not a problem for me as I just set my onstage volume and leave it.) Regarding your thoughts on the earlier Rumble range, I’ve only used a couple when sharing gear on gigs, and didn’t find them particularly great, as well as being heavy for their size. The V3 amps are completely different in most respects. I personally like the vintage vibe of their appearance too, but you can get some models in all black rather than the silver speaker cloth versions. I don’t mind the top mounted controls either! I would consider the 500 combo to be the best all round choice. Weighs around 36lbs, 2x10 speakers, great tone and loud! However, for your circumstances where it’s for home use only I would suggest the 100 combo, which is a 1x12. These can be picked up s/h for less than £200, and sound great too. Hope this helps, cheers.
  8. There's a lot going on but the separate pedal (black, three connectors on the top) absolutely looks like a RAT and sounds like one dialed with a generous amount of highs left in.

  10. Build an acrylic display case around it. Now it's art, not a bass.

  14. I haven't had anything done to mine, no. Just bought the stock item. I bought the reveal version as they are more flexible than the lyric cable that DG uses. As he does, I also bought the speaker cables too. There's no suggestion from me that they're better than any other premium cable. It was just my decision to use that which was used by someone could use anything. Better is subjective, clearly. The Evidence cable proved to be more even across the fretboard.
  15. You hit the nail on the head regarding my edit. Yes, he was affiliated with the Harrisons. I worked for them but left when their illegal activities became clearer and I literally had evidence in my hand - this was years before their conviction (and when I left I went from managing a shop I helped set up for them to being unemployed, it was a 100% moral decision for me). But then it’s hard for Clive not to be affiliated with them in his position, the vintage guitar world is a small one. And despite Rick Harrison’s obvious criminal flaws, he was a very charismatic man that people were drawn to, and of course he had his good points too. I was in the trade from 1993-2010, starting aged 15 at Andy’s in Denmark St, so I was in the vintage world for some time - I say this because I have no doubts there are authenticated frauds out there, from vintage gear down to a small amount of faked custom shop instruments and their certificates. IIRC correctly, but don’t quote me on this, Clive may even have authenticated a Gibson that later turned out to be a fraud. I’m not saying that he or other dealer’s authenticate incorrectly on purpose as I know of some very cunning foxes out there, but some sure as hell have.
  16. It's some years since I owned a real Stingray but the Stinger sounds very close to my ears. As the bass transitioned from the stock SUB to this, I reckon it made the biggest difference.
  17. Hi everyone, I’m Skyler and pretty new here. I’ve been playing a Squier Classic Vibe ’60s Jazz Bass for about 4 months now. It’s been great for learning and practicing, but lately I’ve been thinking about upgrading to something a bit higher-end. For those of you who have more experience, what would you recommend as a good next step? I’m open to different brands and models, but I’d like something versatile enough for both practice and gigging in the near future. Any suggestions or experiences you can share would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance, Skyler Pips NYT
  18. Weddings have always been disastrous for us. We're about as far from a wedding band as you can get. We've played a few as a favor to friends and family. Always small budget weddings in the basement of legion hall with card tables and folding chairs. Our wedding gigs can be described with one word, " embarassing ". Daryl
  19. Hi All I'm getting on a bit in years and don't Gig or even jam but I still love playing my basses (all twenty odd of them). Amplification wise I have three of the more powerful Behringer Ultrabass Combos plus a couple of medium output Line 6 Combos. I've accumulated these over the past few years and whilst they all work fine and deliver volume in plenty, they do so without the quality of tone or finesse I'd like. More recently I've thought about getting shot of these and replacing them with something of better quality. I'm not in the Mark Bass league I'm afraid and at pushing 70 years old and not in the best of health so little point spending hundreds of £ ! I have my eyes on Fender Rumbles (secondhand), the more powerful Combo versions so I get the EQ (to adjust settings for my 4,5,6 string Fretted and Fretless). I'm also leaning more towards the Version 2 rather than the current Version 3 (the 3's don't have a lot of visual appeal to me neither do the controls located on the top and back - I'm old school and prefer mine on the front 😂). Do any members have any experience or advice on the V2 please. And are they the Rumbles really as good as the on line postings say they are? Or am I missing a trick and would be better off with something else. Advice and suggestions welcome please 🙏 Living in a remote rural part of the Country with no decent music shops selling used or nearly new gear (unless its a five hour round trip) doesn't help 🤔! Thanks everyone
  20. Was going to ask more less the same (about the tone) Although I haven’t got any amp that ,,needs,, tube i have an Audio Innovation 500 (2nd Gen) which is hifi valve amp (2 x ECC88 as inverters) 1 x ECC83 as pre-amp and 2 x ECC 83 phono preamp. For the power stage it takes 4 x EL34 or 6L6GC or eventually 5881. To cut the story short , the ECC83 in pre-amp position affects the sound enormously in that sense that if you immerse yourself in the music you would really notice the difference. But that is a hifi amp so I wonder how this would be perceived in normal bass amp.. Anyone ever tried to roll tubes (ECC83 in pre-amp section) in bass amp to see if it sounds better or worse? Btw, ECC83 is the same as 12AX7 as that is American numbering or marking or whatever you call it. ECC803 can be used in its place too i believe. And as far as I remember there are also ,,long plate,, versions of these tubes (ECC83) unsure about ECC803 if these ever came as long plated. British Mullard ECC83 from about 1960 or even earlier, Blackburn factory(don’t know exactly the years and hopefully not mixing up Blackburn production for Mitcham or whatever 🤦‍♂️) are very valuable valves, if you have anything at home that might have a tube in it better check it before chucking it in the bin.. JJ btw is Slovakian company, as far as i remember from what i read on internet they bought equipment used previously by Tesla (Czechoslovakian company, not that ehm Elon..) and they carry on making tubes although it obviously has nothing to do with previous Tesla production, never mind the quality- by that i am not saying that JJ valves/tubes are junk.. Lol, from the top of my head I must have about 30 or over 30 of ECC83/12AX7 of various makes - time to get myself one so that i can figure out by myself? Sorry for the rant 🤷‍♂️😁
  21. standing in for @spongebob band 'Heroes' tonight Dover to Aylesbury, Dartford tunnel on Friday afternoon Spent a lot of time in the band van tonight, love the guys, they're so easy going and apart from the guitarist (Liverpool fan,) we're all hammers fans) Great gig, mod/sks/new wave. The HW 4003shines on some of these songs I've been away from home for 11.5 hours, got 240 quid and had a blast not about the money for me these days, it's about the adventure But it's now 03.57 and I'm still wired, supping a bottle of Rioja Sometimes I love gigging and sometimes I hate it Tonight was a blast
  22. I've left a few bands politely. 'Sorry guys, I have reached the need to change. I've been thinking a lot about it (etc etc) but feel like I'm done Totally happy to give you 3 months to find a replacement And I've always gone back to help them out as a dep (but these were gigging bands) We're all still friends someone said about not burning bridges and i never have but they are a few Winkers that I've played with that I wouldn't p1ss on if they were on fire. Should they come calling, Sorry I'm not available Life circumstances change and it makes me change how I feel doing certain gigs with certain people. When I'm work stressed I don't need the grief but when I'm not work stressed I can deal with it Just tell them and be honest. If they take umbridge, that's their problem
  23. nicely done Steve. How is the Stinger (I like the retrovibe stuff, I have one of his in my HW 4003, sounds perfect)
  24. Firstly best of luck with the necks and all that sail with them!!! As title, this about your experiences in China as a teacher yes? I want to know the extent that this tech has permiated the worlds biggest economy and population, esp the younger ones. Just tonight I filled out yet another western industry questionaire and thought-this is meaningless unless I have a metric that represents china and they see this.......... Hopefully you might share some insights into the stuff we won't be aware of . I did read couple of short pieces by you (humerous) about china and its reach... I believe all musicians both from the past and the future will have to make their peace with this tech as it will utimatly change all our perceptions of MUSIC.
  25. I haven’t bought anything this year, and plan to sell at least 2 of my 5 basses. If the band I’m in falters, I’ll sell my PA and drumset, save one bass a mic and my Ampeg combo amp and wait for the next bus to come along. I’m not likely to need anything, so this is an easy challenge
  26. interesting (considering where its from) I did the quesinairre and gave an opinion how do feel about AI?
