My suggestion would be a band I rate very highly and I would suggest are well worth checking out if you're into your heavy 'stoner' rock (ala QOTSA) like I am! Not often you get a lead singing bassist who is so talented either! Jono Bolton Posted March 28, 2010 Share Posted March 28, 2010 (edited) Garrett Tierney of Brand New, particularly on the last two albums. Usually just a P Bass through an Ampeg SVT but he manages to get a huge range of tones from it. Nate Newton from Converge has a pretty great sound too, there's a reason why a Fender P/SVT combo is pretty much a standard in rock music. thodrik Posted March 28, 2010 Share Posted March 28, 2010 I really liked the bass tone from the guy in Dozer, nothing fancy just great tone that was usually mixed quite well. And on the singing stoner bassists front I'll say Lou Gorra from Halfway to Gone. Just cool. My personal favourite would probably be Torche though, as the whole band provides bass tone! If Deftones count as a modern band I would stick them in too. In terms of famous bands of the moment, nobody really springs to mind. The guy in Alexisonfire has a fairly nice Jazz bass growl at times. Sometimes I almost think the guy in Nickleback gets a good tone, but I'm not sure if it is 'tone' but rather a case of each note being produced to within an inch of its life! This is a prime example of his tone these days, although I have to say I preferred it when he was playing Status Graphite basses...shame about Mattias Eklund murdering Shawn Lane's guitar part though... Mog Posted March 29, 2010 Share Posted March 29, 2010 The guy in Alien Ant Farm has one of the sweetest tones I've come across in ages. Dan Maines from Clutch also has a great sound. Funnily enough I'm trying to nail down a stoner type tone myself at the mo. Problem is theres just one guitarist in the band and keeping the lowend full is tricky. It's the kind of tone that would never work for the majority of players,but it is distinctive and really works for him.
