Effects that look a bit rubbish

From my experience of playing bass I have noticed, particularly when it comes to gear, that bass players can be among the most picky individuals under the sun. I don't look much beyond Fender, in fact I don't really stretch beyond a Precision. Others don't like Fenders at all, and that is cool, we all have different tastes. There are of course many many bassists who like just about anything, no matter how many strings etc, as long as it grooves.

For me, basses are as much about image as sound, live performance is both an aural and visual experience. However I am also very picky about what my effects look like, which may be a bit irrational as only I really see them. So my question to Basschat is, has anyone else been put off buying a stompbox, no matter how awesome it may sound, purely because of how it looks?

The two biggies for me have been:

IMO (it's just an opinion!) This is the chav of the bass effects world:

Without a doubt Zvex (IMO).
What's the deal with those amateur looking child-like daubings on their effects?

Don't like the look of those day-glo DHA ones either - sorry! :)

You don't get much cheaper than Ladipo pedals...

Standard aluminuium box, cheapo deskjet printed image covered in fablon, glued to the top of the box. Hell, even the knobs he uses don't fit on to the pots properly.

You should see his fuzz pedals. Film canister box, tapping screws through the sides holding them together and a CD stuck on the bottom for that glitzy effect.

On the plus point, they do sound great.

Danelectro pedals look crap, as do the Behringer ones. The old Ibanez Tube Screamers look pretty crap too. I don't like the look of Boss pedals either  I really don't like the look of the Korg multi-effect pedals either...

Lots of snobbery going on! :)

I like the look of the Sansamp pedals myself. Danelectro pedals look cheap and nasty, usually, and I'm not a fan of EHX big box pedals, particularly the ones with the "electrocute yourself at home in 2 easy steps!" power adaptors.

We need more effects like this:

I don't mind Behringer, they are cheap so I guess I don't really care what they look like. But when your talking about a price tag of £100 plus, then image is a major stumbling block.

The thing about Zvex is that people do spend plenty-dosh because of their image, but from my (very limited) experience of them, the finish isn't designed to be trod on repeatedly for a decade.

Don't buy a bluebird Tremolo then. The finish won't last. great pedal otherwise.
Maxon. Look like crap, sound like heaven.

EDIT: Doesn't bother me, though. One of my favourite pedals for guitar is a fuzz I built myself. Plain metal housing, with "DEATH FUZZ" written on in marker pen. :)
+1 the AF-9 is beige fer cryin' out loud, how crap is that!!!

Still the most wonderfully responsive touch wah I've played, but damn that looks nasty

Before I heard of (and then bought) the CP-9 Pro+ compressor, I'd put Maxon in the same mental category as Rocktek, based purely on the way they look. But by 'eck, it's a nice compressor.

blimey - a lot of folks don't seem to like maxons!!

i have a maxon ad9 Pro, and not only is it an immense deley, i really like the look! was always a sucker for vintage ibanez-style pedals though...

I don't care for the sound of many boss pedals, but don't mind the look of their older pedals, especially (in fact only when...) they're really beaten up.

DOD pedals look like they should be distributed via christmas crackers though..

Boss pedals look boring to me. I like the look of most of MXR & EHX pedals. I like the look of some of the new Seymour Duncan pedals too:

Best looking pedal for me is my Hartke VXL Bass Attack - it looks mean and it's a great unit.
