For those of you who know you Ibanez guitars from this period you know that they do not have Ibanez Logo's on the headstock (well not all of them) and this one has no markings other than the neck plate markings. The bass was looked over by an expert who writes about the history of guitars and they said it is not uncommon to see prototypes from Ibanez like this with serial number 1, this means it was the first prototype rather than the first production model.
I'll have a google concerning this one, but my expectation is that this listing is a cornucopia of BS.

Dunno what it is (interesting old thing, if nothing else) but the "Ibanez Prototype" spiel is exactly the bovine bowel product you suspect.

This whole "unbranded Ibanez" myth comes from the early 70s catalogues which simply show unbranded Fujigen factory stock shots. Since Ibanez was, is, and has only ever been a brand name, the notion of "Ibanez prototypes" (particularly 70s era copies) is something of a nonsense, and the rule of thumb is if it doesn't say Ibanez, it ain't one.

It is an interesting bass, however nothing about it says it's even Japanese. 70s MIJ hardware is very easy to spot, and this bass doesn't have any, pickups are unusual & I'd be inclined to think it's quite a bit more recent than the 1974 he's claiming.

If bids started at £80 rather than the ludicrous £800 I might be interested.

Now, this looks fantastic IMHO. I lowballed it, but was instantly outbid by a previous bid.

No BIN on it now - presumably someone bid & it disappeared. How much was it?

That's an RSB Deluxe II - I've got a lovely blueburst r/h one, with a badly twisted neck, had it from new in the 80s and it was my main bass for about 15 years until the twist made it unplayable. That's a crazy bargain - these are fantastic basses, and any lefty JapCrap fans here should be scrapping over that.

Wonder how mine would look with a lefty neck...

Not entirely sure yet, but off the top of my head:
....

In fairness I don't actually want to sell very much of this stuff, but a house move within the next 6 months leaves me with no alternative. FAO mods - this isn't a "for sale" list, I have no prices for any of this and am not soliciting offers. In due course I'll put stuff up on BC in the appropriate fashion.

J.
ah I recognise some of that stuff from when we were talking tentatively about a trade with the SG400 of mine before you went off grid for a bit. I spent ages googling to find out what they all were :)
I ended up keeping the SG for a few years, I down sized and sold a nice acoustic over it- which was great until I realised that it wasn't getting played at all. I sold it to a nice irish fella in leeds, kept £100 from it and spent the rest on a rather cheap 1977 BB1200 in a case- which was quite a good deal for me whatever way you look at it! :D

You ever had those moments where you seriously consider buying a lefty because it's so cheap, then have to remind yourself that you won't actually be able to play the thing?

Yes, yes I do. It would be a proper challenge to learn, wouldn't it?

Luke - really wish I'd hung around long enough to buy that SG of yours! Still my dream g*it*r, one day I'll give in & blow a stupid amount of money on a mid-80s SG2000 or 3000.
I dunno if she said but your other half was going to get it off me (contact via ebay) as a present for you when you we on sabbatical, but it didn't work out for whatever reason, I think neither of us were sure on a value. TBH there's better SG's out there - I'm on a few local forums on Facebook and theres some very nice mid 80's ones around for not stupid money at all.

No, she never told me! I'm very touched by that. I did go through a pretty awful time back then & sometimes wonder if I'd be around now if it hadn't been for her. She is lovely.

I believe that the SD Curlee Hondo II's were Korean, not Japanese. But, they look the late 70s/early 80s part. IMHO.

What is that big metal plate on the back? Edit: Ah, long neck join? http://forum.westoneguitars.net/t2930-s-d-curlee-hondo

Because it's a cross between a through neck and bolt-on design. The wood actually runs all the way to the bridge, and the is bolted into the body shape. Travis Bean guitars were made in a similar way.

Thanks. I've edited my post to include a Westone forum post with big photos showing the join.

Early Westone Thunder 1A just popped up £100 BIN. 'needs a service' - even so that is cheap!

This Vox Standard looks alright:

http://m.ebay.co.uk/...1483?nav=SEARCH
unlike this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vox-Standard-Bass-Guitar-with-Rockbag-/261458099773?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3ce01dfe3d

It's had a lot of stripping done to the body and headstock, and the seller doesn't mention it. it would be better with the headstock stripped entirely, IMO.

Agreed - and the body too, if the back's anything to go on, it's a nice bit of timber.

Early bolt-on SB600. I don't recognise this finish.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ARIA-SB600-1979-BASS-RARE-BOLT-ON-NECK-EXCELLENT-CONDITION-/201077338724?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2ed124b264

That would be a very good price for a classic era SB600. I'm not sure how much a 1979 model is worth, and whether that's the original finish.

Vantage Fretless. I think these were Matsumoku until they started sourcing them from Korea, weren't they?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VANTAGE-FRETLESS-BASS-MADE-IN-JAPAN-C-1980s-/291130580860?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43c8bc1f7c

Looks reasonably nice, but I don't think I'd be the envy of all my friends on it.
