Dude, where's the bass player?

Charlie Hunter Trio...does it count as not having a bass with the 8-string Novax that he plays - 3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings? It's pretty unique and impressive either way, and well worth checking out!

Lots of Hammond organ trio stuff is good too like some of the Pat Martino stuff, such as 'Liva at Yoshi's.' Joey Defrancesco is a great Hammond organ player who covers the bass incredibly well.

Yeah The Doors got a session bassist in for a few songs like Peace Frog etc.
Listening to the doors made me want to play an instrument, my mate was selling a sh*t Bass so I had a go... then realised after buying it that the Doors didnt have a bassist. Fail. but WIN for the bass
On a slight tangent....

I once saw a Stanley Clarke gig on TV and he had a 'proper' bass player standing next to him!
Yeah that confused the hell put of me when I covered his 'Live at the Greek' version of 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat', in the end I mainly played the 'bass' bass part and incorporated a few of Stanley's licks where they were needed. The lead guitarist had it worse though trying to come up with a composite line of all the horn, guitar and lead bass parts that were going on throughout the song, did a great job though I reckon. You can hear our own live take of it on here if you're interrested: http://www.myspace.com/oscarsouthmusic

In a similar vein, I would add Metallica ...And Justice for All. Some great songs ruined or held back by lackluster production, but then again, that is often their trademark.

Jimmie Vaughan
Steve Winwood
Both powered by Hammond pedals in a live situation.

Saw Little Richard a while ago with 2 bass players (one who looked a bit like Prince funnily enough).
Also recent showing on BBC4 of a James Brown concert from St Lukes - 2 bass players in the band.
A perfect example of more is less. A brilliant first album with just piano/voice/drums, each successive album has less original music and more producer-led "stuff(ing)" :)
Best description I've heard for what some producers do!

+1 on that..... more like a hatchet job, than a production job. You can barely hear Jason's bass :)
