Reverb buyer "offer" does it smell scammy to you?

Hello, selling a thing on reverb, just got an offer with a request for a video of the item to be sent over whatsapp.. seems like a scamy thing. but I am new to reverb.

"Excuse me, could you send me a video of the product review via Watsap? I want to make sure that the product belongs to you, because I'm afraid of being caught by scammers.

Watsap +44 738 909 8xxx"

Anyone have any experience in scamland? is this just a gateway spoof to get me to loose my shirt and other items of clothing?

can't see the harm in sending a vid, just be wary of suspicious follow ups, like paying via paypal, I never sold anything on Reverb so not sure what the procedure is

It may be a way to get in touch off Reverb as bypassing Reverb for a sale also means avoiding Reverb's fees - something that comes in handy if you see something on Reverb that's in Warwick or Leamington Spa, ie Bass Direct or Bass Bros, as it's cheaper going via the store.

It could be a genuine request, and the buyer would be happy with a link to an unlisted YouTube video if it were. As @tauzero says it could be that they want your phone number.

Reverb has decent protection for the buyer (I've  never had cause to claim on it though) so it seems a bit odd that that this is being requested. Nothing to lose in doing a quick video though, just be wary of follow-up requests.

Quickly made an account here to say that I got exactly the same message on Reverb just today. Different phone number but also from UK. Location 1702, Argentina.  Pretty big red flag.

Yeh, it seems once there is a scam you get a lot of it. That is what we get here.

Scam.

Once they have a contact route outside of Reverb they will use that to send you a message, appearing to come from Reverb, asking you to log in. The link will be to a fake site and will ask you to input your password. And so on and so forth…

If you send a video of the item you are selling, he could create his own listing using it, take payment from someone and the buyer who didn't receive it would come after you. There'd be "proof" you were the seller via your video  Don't do it. Defo a scammer.

It was hijacked by scammers. I know it's difficult to be suspicious of everything - if you're a decent sort, it goes against the grain not to trust people - but needs must.

Sadly these days I just walk away at the slightest sniff of scam, both as buyer and seller. Luckily most scammers are lazy and generic so they're easy to spot, but some are certainly more subtle, and a few are downright cunning. But for me there is a 100% watertight rule, trust your gut; if it feels dodgy, shut it down. There is a very good scientific database behind our evolved and largely subconscious ability to detect deception and cheating in others. But there's a problem and scammers understand that problem very well; the apprehension and anxiety that feeds into our gut feeling can be over-ridden by hope and its cognitive consequences; "I feel like it's dodgy (anxiety) but I want it to be legit (hope) and think how good it would be if it was....". Excitement! Anxiety is an evolutionarily ancient and tried and trusted emotion. Hope and excitement less so. Always trust your anxiety 👍
