I am so done with the low gain OD thing...

Maybe I've attended too many gigs this year but almost every bass player I've seen recently has had the same tone: 
 

Fender P/J > low gain OD

 

Does anyone play straight into an amp anymore?

I do in 2 of my bands, the 3rd (which I`ve now left) did get some gain from a Sansamp, but only noticeable if digging in. Have to say after years of using preamp pedals I do prefer bass straight into an amp nowadays. Miraculously it sounds like a bass that way.

Only one low gain OD!? Lightweights. Anything less than three stacked drive pedals and it’s not really bass

Sometimes I just use a low-gain overdrive into my bass.

Just picked up a TC Spark Booster off the forum and first impressions are very favourable. It's nice and flexible depending on what you're looking for and none of the options sound straight 'bad' which is nice. As to the topic of the post, I play in 3 piece bands these days playing mainly Rock and a bit of growl fills the sound out, particularly when the guitarist is soloing.
