The band is on stage, the crowd aren't and the lines must not be crossed unless there's a fire .....I might have forgotten to take my meds today so it's back to the padded room for me As ever - context is everything. I saw a band on Friday night Papa Shango. Adult rock (Limp Bizkit?) pantomime on steroids is how I'd describe it. Female and male lead singers, 4 backing singers and a lead guitarist wandering around the floor. Rhythm, bass and drums occasionally joining them. Walking round the audience with squirty cream, biscuits, water pistols, it was a full on audience participation. If they're playing local go and watch it, even if the music isn't your cup of brandy. I'm all for that kind of ridiculousness. We have a tendency to take ourselves far too seriously. Edited 19 hours ago by TimR 3 Quote

Merch included branded Buttplugs? If so they're relatively straightahead punk - they were on at Rebellion right before us, they were tight as and lots of fun though some may think them a touch frivolous. I liked 'em! Quote

Despite me learning to play on them! I agree. Not enough strings or note-position choices. Too thin a neck. Yet most pop songs in the past 70 years have a 4-string bass guitar on the track, and many bassists are very musical and capable on a 4 string bass. 1 Quote

Beer of the Bass Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago I don't think Jaco would have been philosophically against more than 4 strings, he had a 5-string acoustic bass he played in his off-time. But the Fenders were available and familiar instruments. If he'd managed to get on top of his issues and had been around for longer, who knows what he might have explored. 1 Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Five string basses are a completely different instrument. Musically they offer very little more at the expense of being considerably awkward to play in a way that's kind to your joints. They are fun to use and useful in lmited situations, but most people who 'need one as it's better playing across the neck' would be better off with a short scale or a baritone bass. 1 2 Quote

As presumably a 4 is compared to a 3 string bass? Quote
SimonK Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Flutes - an instrument that is never needed in bands that include drums, bass and guitars. Orchestras, marching bands OK maybe - but not rock music! Bloody things are seldom in tune anyway. Quote

It didn't really work musically and all me and the lead guitarist could do while she was playing was stand on one leg with t'other foot on our knee-cap Ian Anderson style. This was, of course, during rehearsal Quote
